  • Book of Ecclesiasticus 48,1-15
    1 The prophet Elijah appeared like a fire, and his word burned like a torch.
    2 He caused famine to come upon them and, in his zeal, reduced them to a few people.
    3 By the word of the Lord he closed the sky and caused fire to fall from there three times.
    4 O Elijah, how glorious you became by your wonders! Who could boast of being like you?
    5 You who raised a man from death and the abyss by the word of the Lord;
    6 you, who cast kings into ruin and caused illustrious men to fall from their beds;
    7 you, who heard reproaches at Sinai and decrees of vengeance at Horeb.
    8 You anointed kings to take vengeance, and prophets to succeed you;
    9 you were caught up in a whirlwind of fire, a chariot of horses also of fire,
    10 you, in the threats of the times to come, were appointed to calm the anger of the Lord before the wrath, to turn the heart of the father to the son,
    and reestablish the tribes of Jacob.
    11 Blessed are those who saw you, and those who fell asleep in your friendship!
    12 We also will surely live; but, after death, our name will not be such.
    13 Only Elijah was involved in the whirlwind, Elisha was filled with his spirit. During his life he feared no prince, and no one surpassed him in power.
    14 There was nothing above his strength, and even when he was dead, his body prophesied.
    15 During his life he performed wonders, and even in death his works were wonderful.
    Word of the Lord.
    REFLECTION
    Elijah and Elisha are the two religious figures who stand out most in the 9th century BC. W.
    The text, which we hear today, is like a eulogy for the two prophets, who lived and acted at a critical moment for Yahweh.
    Elijah, the prophet of impetuous fire, remembers his role during the famine and drought, the flame lit three times on Mount Carmel, his help to the widow of Zarephath, his opposition to Ahab, Acasiah and Joram, the frequency of the holy mountain, the anointing and repudiation of the king, the prophetic investiture and the rapture to heaven.
    A nod is also made to the future messianic role of the prophet.
    Elisha, whose name means God saves, remembers his political role and thaumaturgical activity, with an allusion to the posthumous prodigy.
    Elisha's thaumaturgical power is revisited several times, also in the liturgy: the Shunammite and the double birth of the son; the multiplication of loaves; the healing of Naaman.
