My Mom was so cool and understanding allowing me to skip school to see this game 2 and game 3. Still have the scorebook I kept miles away across country in LA.
I love the way Foli chokes up even when he's clearly swinging away. I can see today's managers absolutely aghast at this. "How are you going to hit a solo home run like that??!!"
The Pirates had the most awesome uniforms between 1977 and 1984. Then they decided to follow the crappy gray trend begun by San Francisco in 1983. By 1992 everybody was gray again, with Montreal and Kansas City being the last two holdouts with powder blue. But the real dark jersey era ended in 1990 once the Cubs changed to gray too.
The Pirates still wore the all yellows in 1986 with the gold helmets because that's the uniform Barry Bonds was wearing when he hit his first home run in Atlanta
I am not sure why Concepcion would be stealing third with one out and Bench at the plate in the bottom of the third inning. That really killed a potential rally.
Back then, even though NBC had the nationwide TV rights to the League Championship Series that year (ABC showed the World Series, which the Pirates went on to win), the participating teams' local stations, such as KDKA-2 in Pittsburgh, were allowed to do their own broadcasts.
Yes. The local station would simulcast the national broadcast and use their own announcers. I believe 1983 was the last year they were allowed to do that.
Two pretty good teams…. A great rivalry… always loved it when they played each other. Wish the Reds woulda won but the Pirates were hot coming in and wouldn’t be denied! Baltimore found that out also….😁
Johnny Bench and others on the Reds downplayed losing Pete Rose, but Rose got the last laugh as the Reds could only win a division title without Rose, while Rose won a WS and played in another without the Reds.
Lot of complicated interpersonal issues between bench and rose. No doubt Pete rose was as valuable a player you could have on a postseason team. But, the Reds should've won this series.
I didn't say anything about shills. But yes, I think home announcers should be emotionally vested in their team. They can still be professional and pull for the home.team. National broadcasts are different. I'm referring to home broadcasts.
As I recall, the Collins play in the 5th inning was a huge controversy at the time. Today of course, it would be overturned, and the Reds might have won this game. Pirates probably still would have won the series but you never know.
Collins was an underrated player who stole a lot of bases for the Reds and then the Blue Jays. There was no doubt he had the speed to make a play like that one, and I too believe the call would've been over-turned under today's replay technology.
TommyC503 I’m a Pirates fan and I agree that the Bucs might have lost this one without getting that call. But these things even out - you take ‘em when you get ‘em. In FPulli’s defense that was a difficult call - a lot of white showing.
@@brianfergus839 Lots of people in my church were talking about the play. The consensus was that Pulli should have conferred with the first base "right-field line" ump, as the play-by-play announcers suggest themselves. Takes a lot of arrogance to assume you're right and not even bother conferring with your colleagues.
As a Reds fan maybe they win this one. More than likely the Pirates win the series. The Pirates had a great team and it just seams like they were a team of destiny that year. Loved pops and the cobra even as a Reds fan.
Thanks again for posting this. I remember this game my dad was getting family vehicle inspectioned and had listen to most of the game on radio by time it was over I had to watch highlights on news
Bad baserunning by Tim Foli in the 4th inning. He "must" score from 2nd base on a double off the wall. Parker and Stargell were correct in their running.
Well, was Foli thinking Foster would make the catch, so he stayed at second in order to tag up (as the announcers were discussing), since Foster would have had his back to the infield when making the catch? Foster did come close. What I don't get is why he did not run home when they went after Stargell. He had started towards home plate when he realized what was happening, so it wasn't like he had a full 90 feet to run.
The reds had no sprit morgan was hurt rose was gone in tony no sparky they were just going though the motions they missed there spark plug that being tony perez howsam made a hell ofa trade when he got morgan but he really fucked up when he traded perez it broke there hearts he was concepcion's brother so why wouldhe trade perez to let dresson play he was a big let down that was the end of the big redmachine he built it and tore it down the day he let tony go
Having Rose in this series would have made a huge difference. Look at the inspiration he gave the Phillies the next year. Mike Schmidt has publicly credited Rose with giving him the confidence to carry a team on his back.
Interesting that Tanner had Madlock, who batted .328 with the Bucs that year, in the #6 spot. I don't know if that is where Tanner always had him batting, but seems a bit low in the lineup for someone who was hitting that well and had already won 2 NL batting titles. And then he had Garner in the 8th spot and he batted .293 that year. That is some good hitters in the bottom half of the lineup.
I have been a reds fan for years went to river front bunch of times but the stadium was so boring just a cookie cutter if three rivers and veterans stadium you are stuck you cant see anything outside it is cled river front stadium but you dont see the river

@@crowtservo That's all baseball was back in the day. Most baseball announcers on local games did in that way. Today, there are separate broadcast teams for radio and television.

SLIDING BOXES!!!!!!!!!!! They should NEVER have been allowed!!!!! UGLIEST baseball diamonds EVER!!!! And not just in Pittsburgh. . .I'm a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and I HATED them in St. Louis also. A real baseball diamond with a dirt infield is one of the most unique athletic fields in all of sports. Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, and Football all use the same shape of field for their games. . .a rectangle. But no other sport uses the unique shape of a "real" major league baseball diamond. . .WITH NO SLIDING BOXES. I am SO glad that all the new "retro" ballparks have done away with them.
As a Reds fan it's difficult to click "like" on this...but as a Dave Parker fan, I did. :)

I also watched in LA but I missed most of this game because of school. I saw the 10th inning.
Ray Knight did played for the Reds (1979). He won Baseball's MVP for the Mets World Series run (1986)!!!
I love the way Foli chokes up even when he's clearly swinging away. I can see today's managers absolutely aghast at this. "How are you going to hit a solo home run like that??!!"

I agree. Nowadays, every team just wears dull all-white/all-gray uniforms, with an occasional colored shirt.
I always wanted a Pirates vs A's world series back then just to see the uniforms on the field at the same time.
The Pirates still wore the all yellows in 1986 with the gold helmets because that's the uniform Barry Bonds was wearing when he hit his first home run in Atlanta
Those were awful. 1971 Clemente era was the best imo
As a Reds fan, two heartbreaking extra inning losses in the first two. Cost them the series.
Absolutely got no breaks this whole series..it was the pirates year. Plain n simple
If the Reds kept Sparky Anderson as Manager, they would have had a chance to go to the World Series that year.
I am not sure why Concepcion would be stealing third with one out and Bench at the plate in the bottom of the third inning. That really killed a potential rally.
The play by play announcer sounded just like Harry Caray, especially at 2:22:44.

Seems strange to hear the announcers say 'we' and 'our' obviously rooting for one team over another.
