How To Use A Fish Finder Echo Sounder and GPS On A Boat

  • In this video I explain how I use my fish finder (Echo Sounder) and GPS to find fish and different seabed habitats. I show how the fish mark on the sounder and how the different areas of sea bed look. I mark on the GPS and show how a wreck appears on the echo sounder. Your equipment doesn't have to be fancy to find you the fish!

      @@TheFishLocker I so much enjoy your videos. You have a knack, a humanity that lends itself to great TV. Honestly, I think you are Jack Hargreaves' successor. If you were twenty years younger you would know what a compliment that is. (all his programmes are available on CZcams) I do a lot, al lot of bass fishing in the western solent and some marks 10 to 15 miles offshore in the Channel. Frankly I am getting bored. I was really interested to see you were using a slow jig in a previous video. You just skated past it, no commentary, I think you caught a nice pouting. I am very intrigued by this form of fishing and the possibility to switch on fish on slack water that wouldn't normally be that interested in what I do - soft plastics etc. My question is, when the bass that are ambushing baitfish over a bank are switched off since the tide has dissipated, where do they go? Any thoughts?

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  Před 4 lety +1

      Simon Carpenter - Sorry for the late response Simon. It is a subject that is heavy in debate. I personally have seen these things first hand so have my own opinion. Fish sometimes are almost triggered into life by the tide and dropped into a form of stasis when the tide is dead. It’s an odd thing they sometimes almost hang there in the water. And they absolutely will not feed. Other times when the current drops away from over a bank for example, the fish spread out and mill around. The same as they do on really slack neaps.

    I'm an old fella and find these electronic devices absolutely amazing! It made me think about my trips out with my Grandfather when I was a boy in the mid 1930's, in his old wooden clinker built rowing boat. No such electronic devices back then, just knowledge passed down from Father to son, and a long plumb line to navigate to the best spots and to find your depth in the waters of Devon & Cornwall. I wonder what my Grandfather would of thought of this technology? I suspect that he'd be as mind blown and as impressed by it all as I am. Thank you for teaching me about the marvellous modern way of navigation and depth finding John, you truly are an encyclopaedia of fishing knowledge, and present it so well.

    Can't beat the Garmin units for fish clarity. One thing worth adding is bottom hardness, thicker the bottom signal the harder the bottom. Makes it easy to tell the difference between a flat muddy bottom and a flat Sandy bottom. Keep the videos coming, 3 weeks and counting weathered off up here so need a fish fix any way we can get it.

Me, the fish & the right bait come together at the same time. A timely accident. @@TheFishLocker I have owned 2 boats before (1 was a 13 foot open dinghy with very small outboard, other a 14 foot speed boat), I'm OK at the driving of boat, but want more anchoring on marks/wrecks and using the electronics. Always willing to learn more from knowledgeable ppl. I am a very cautious person when it comes to boating as the day something bad happens is not the time to wish you'd learned how to do things properly or not having the correct safety gear to hopefully save yourself/others on the boat. Around Cardiff where I live we have some of the highest/fastest tidal flows in the World at 14+ Metres not a place to mess about in.
      So as I said any knowledge I can pick up, or go over again and remember it is always worthwhile. One of my pet hates is people going to sea without lifesavers, flares etc as too many die or use valuable coast guard time when for a smallish amount of money they could be safer.

    Another great vid guide - thanks.
    It might be beyond the scope of this one but you do mention at 13.39 that the image on the sounder is just what is immediately below the transducer. Might sounds obvious to some but really worth thinking about what that means because some people don't realise (and I have to keep reminding myself!) The sounder is a 1d image while the chart is 2d. For e.g. the contours on the chart (as you say regarding the spacing) reflect the actual shape of a feature - channel, banks, pinnacle etc while the sounder scrolls at a set speed so the gradients are relative to SOG. Put another way - the x-axis is time not distance. I don't know if you can interface the sounder to the plotter to take account of speed to normalise the effect but it would be a useful option. I guess side scan does that or you would get distorted images...?
    keep it up!

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  Před 5 lety +1

      Boy Scott - Good comment. Side scan is something different. Your basic echo sounder/fish finder is far less sophisticated and literally is a “bounce-back” representation of what is directly below you. So slow speed or stationary will give you a much much better picture. It can even be totally lost if you travel at high speed and you don’t receive the bounce back.

    Great demo, might i add, i understand your sounder was set for tutorial,
    But if you set your sounder to look from the bottom up and not the top down, example
    Depth = 100 feet = 30 meters ish
    Look 110 feet to 70 feet
    A window of 30 feet above and 10 below
    Now divide your verticle pixle count in the 30 foot window,
    And now you have a pixel that represents a measurement,
    Same with the horizontal pixels, this will aid in quality catches,
    So if your screen is vert 180 in the 30 ft window 1 pixel is 6 inches,
    Using the 6 inch measurement a colour taking up 3 horizontal pixels is 18 inches,
    Hope this helps, davi b Ausie, we fish in 100 meters of salt water, so our window is 30 meters deep, this works well at identifying size,
    colour id's breed of fish,

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  Před 3 lety

      We do not have enough Pelagic/Semi pelagic species for this to be relevant. Ours are more found by ground feature than actual ID on the sounder.

I do have my own small boat, and I intend to do a tour of cornwall when this lockdown mess is over. would it be possible when this is over for you to do a video of launching sites for visiting boat anglers ,including costs and any local stipulations for launching. keep up the good work, and you and your family stay safe .tks Allen

There may be info online about them. Dive surveys even? But ultimately, you need to go out and have a look. 😉👍🏻🛥🎣

    Tell me, both of your units look like they will do both to some extent. Plot routes and display sonar images, so why do you use them both for different things, is it just for ease of use?
    You don't have to split the screen in two or toggle between screen's I'm guessing?

    Hey up John.
    How do find the accuracy of Navionics regarding their wreck locations? I’ve got Navionics on my iPhone and iPad and log wreck co-ordinates from Wreckfinder and some of them differ by as much as 40 yds. Don’t sound a lot but it’s a bugger when your out there !
    I know the wreck in your vid as I suppose many more will recognise it and notice your waypoint is off the Navionics mark so if anglers try to locate wrecks using Navionics they’re in for a frustrating day! The rest of the detail I’ve found spot on. Top video as usual, hopefully see you at Mylor one day.
