- On today's episode, it's a walk around and test drive of Gary Hergert's 1961 Chrysler 300G. This car has lived a long and colorful life - namely, the factory cinnamon color, lipstick red, whatever color the smoke billowing out from under the hood when it caught on fire was, and finally the factory cinnamon again. The full size Chrysler performance car is humongous, heavy, and loaded with torque and chrome.

WOW,stunning, gorgeous looking machine. Absolutely Beautiful. Back when Chrysler built something special for someone special. Back when you could order color, engine,tires and hubcaps, interior style. A timeless masterpiece.
Big Chryslers are awesome, especially that 65. I had a 66 Newport,beautiful car. Put your A body in trunk in case you run out of gas.

Chrysler put those long ram intakes and swivel seats in their super deluxe wagons too. That dash is one the most fantastic ever made. Someone once told me the 413's were unbreakable. I doubt that, but I think it was earned praise.
Well, people have told me the slant six is unkillable, and yet I’ve hung a rod out of the side of one before… still, they’re definitely quite stout. Haha.

Buddy of mine, his dad had a 62 model 300 with a 4 speed, years of going to the dragstrip told me it was a musclecar.
Wish one of these would just accidentally show up in my back yard... I love early 60s 300s... I'll keep looking for one to show up, till then keep showing em on your channel, please.

A friend of my dad's had a GORGEOUS convertible one. He had one of those inflatable car bubbles for it, until the points on the back of the fins tore holes right through it.

I was 20 in 1978 and bought a 300G for $1200 from a Seattle cop. At the time the engine had a single 4bbl, with the long rams, carbs, and air cleaners in the trunk The leather interior was in decent shape and the electroluminescent dash lighting even worked. I rebuilt the 413 and put the long rams back on. I also painted the car (it had no cancer!), and bought new wide white wall tires. I installed manual chokes because I didn't have the heat riser tubes that went from the exhaust manifolds to the undersides of the carbs. I sold the car in 1981 for........ $1200. Yep, that's what they were worth back then. I also nearly bought my brother's 300-C (392 dual quad) that he had been restoring but I had no storage room. He wanted $2500 for it in the early 90's. Yeah, there are some regrets with my prior car-buying escapades.
I love it! I definitely want to see more letter cars. I think that thing is just really super cool. And yes it is definitely a muscle car
Thanks for sharing - beautiful car! I’ve been a Forward Look guy since I was a kid. I bought my ‘57 New Yorker in ‘78 and took it to the dealership that sold it new for some work. The service manager gave me a tip on filling the master cylinder under those boosters: take a piece of sheet metal about 2 inches wide by 6 inches long, bend a vee into it the long way and use it like a gutter to pour the fluid into the pot. Been doing it ever since.

Thanks for a cool video30 years ago I rented this house I got back at a 57 Chrysler 300C convertible that needed everything he sent it out for paint body work done a new top I rebuilt the motor rear end tranny big project took years turned out great it was copper bronze metallic White interior sent out the weird brake booster to get redone that Bellows thing it was a cool car he had a little over 87,000 and after it was done then he got old and said well I got to sell it so I took it to auction he got 40 grand for it took a big hit but hey that was cool ride have a great day

I happened to stumble upon a YT video about the 1961 Desoto right after watching this DDG episode. It made for a interesting comparison. However, poor Desoto...the front end was truly...words can't describe it.
Yeah… the Chrysler is what I would call funky. The DeSoto is just… unfortunate.

Really cool. Brings back memories. My aunt Agnes had one something like this back in the mid 1960s. It was black with a white interior. She was the aunt who I thought was rich. Her hair was black and waaaay too big as were the gawdy rings she wore along with her rhinestone encrusted black horn rimmed glasses. And of course she chain smoked. But she could haul some serious ass in that beast. Picture that if you will.
That’s awesome. I’m picturing it right now. My great grandma drove a 383 powered ‘68 Charger… with gusto. Haha.

I had a 300 G , I had to get gas at the airport . It's not particularly quick but it is terrifyingly fast , especially for a car where the steering wheel does not feel like it's connected to anything . The braking and handling were excellent compared to my 73 Country Squire . I loved my G and consider myself priveledged to have owned one .
That’s awesome. I agree - it sure doesn’t feel like a sports car, but it does impressive stuff. Higher octane fuel is definitely a necessity.

The heater leak is probably from the heater control valve mounted up behind the glove box. I just changed the valve in my 60 a few weeks back. You have to take the glove box door off, take the glove box out to get at it up above the heater fan housing. Takes a bit of manipulating to get it out but not terribly difficult. Took me about 35 minutes to get it out and hanging down inside the glove box with the control cable still attached. Also had to make a new gasket before installing the rebuilt valve. Also had to remove one of the vacuum actuators to get it back in easily. Not the worst job...
It was one loose heater hose clamp. The heater core had recently been replaced, and someone had been a little shy with the screw clamp torque. I think I showed that in the video. It was fixed for the last test run. But hey, that’s good to know. And dang… yours is pretty!

Those twisting seats would be a nice ergonomic feature today.
Plenty of room for both legs and shoulders- something that probably drives Truck sales in this era of downsizing.
Large with the poor handling/braking typical for the era- but you can see bits of the styling carried over for several years afterward.
But when you kick those dual-quads in- Yippee!!
Funny to think that while Chrysler was designing and building this- they were designing components of Saturn 5, and had been building the Thor short-range nuclear-tipped missles.
Maybe the reason for the 'rocket fins'.

Oh yeah. I think the fin stuff was a conscious tie-in with that era of rockets, space race development, etc. Very typical indeed - it’s definitely a boat. But the ride quality is excellent. It’s really interesting (to me) to look at all of these different cars from the 50s to the 70s and see them slowly evolve toward what we have today.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Agreed- like the '64-66 A-bodies with their vestigil fins w/strong verticle compenent to the tailamps, gauge faces with a resemblance to a aircraft level, and the rocket/jet cone housing w/red refective ring and white center of the reverse lamps - again rocket/afterburner(reheat) theme.
After seeing the Chrysler G's 'Cockpit' styling- the carryover to the 66-67 Charger was amazing.
Still, IMO the high water mark for 'cockpit' styling was the early '70's AMC Javelin SST Mark Donahue edition.
It just wrapped around the driver's seat, great vision, well laid out gauges, informative- not distractive, just great.

The Jay Leno video on his '61 300 G is very informative as he had a '61 300 G expert rattle off facts and figures. I have to say that Leno's 300 G in black has a very sinister, mafia look about it.

Yes! Extremely close in fact. I really like the look of the 63-64 880 nose. I’d like to have one of those in coupe form some day. Although I did a bunch of work on a ‘64 880 wagon, and it was pretty cool too.
@@DeadDodgeGarage The wagon is the rarest of the 880's, something like only 1.5K were only made?
The 2 door's are cool, but the 4 door with the hardtop is really nice also, can hardly tell it's a 4 door with the windows down.

@@samhicks97 I'm a big fan of the four door hardtop too. The same gentleman actually owns (or owned at the time) two 880 wagons and one Chrysler of the same body style.
I have owned 2 1961 300 G one in 1968-1970 raced in in H Stock Auto 13/50 13/90 constantly what fun got married in it 1968. It got sold didn't know what a letter car was till i sold it . Dummy now i own a completely restored 1961 which my wife and i enjoy after 57 yrs of marriage .we go to car shows people today don't even know what it is .Hope my kids enjoy it after we are gone..

I consider these to be, more "supercars" or "factory racers". The term "Muscle Car" really did not exist until Pontiac took a mid-size, lighter weight LeMans/Tempest, and put a full size car engine in it and called it GTO in 1964. The whole power to weight ration thing, light car, big engine. This is a big car, big engine, 100% amazing.

I drove my late friend's 62 300 w/ a 426 wedge and in line dual quads and CI headers at the drag strip. It's kinda frightening when you have 6k pounds of steel that is that fast.
That’s when Chrysler was Chrysler back in the day you knew exactly what you wanted and what you needed in that Chrysler. Chrysler designed,built,created,made and manufactured Rides ahead of their time because their cars were based on the Space Race Competition with The USSR or Russia 🇷🇺 back then. If I had the proper funds room & space I would definitely 👍🏾 buy and add that 300G to my Antique,Classic and Vintage Auto Collection + drive them around in the end of Spring and beginning of Summer into the beginning of Fall. Wow, beautiful car. I need to see if you can offer any ideas about my 62 dart witch when gets driven on a hot day will not manually shift, therefore I can not shift to neutral to go to park, so if I shut her off the neutral safety won't let me start again until she cools down a bit. Any ideas?? Thanks
Huh. That’s very odd. I don’t know why ambient temperature would make a difference, but I do know correct shift cable adjustment is critical, and I have experienced something like that in similar situations of bad cable adjustment - it basically just won’t shift. But never relating to the temperature outside… if you haven’t done the adjustment process before, I recommend doing a bit of reading on the subject, then getting the cable set exactly right. Hopefully that helps.

Dad had a 300D and then a 300F. I was a teenager and really though they were cool.
My friend that lives down that way had a black 1962 300 he sold a year or so ago. You may have seen it around town . Think he sold it with a white 62 parts car. Im drooling over that 65 300L , WOW !
Wait, I know a guy who had a black ‘62 Newport or New Yorker with red interior, and I’m pretty sure he also had a white one. I’m at least fairly sure it wasn’t a 300. I suck at names and am drawing a blank on his right now. But we did some front end work on that car. I really liked it and wanted to buy it but it wasn’t in the budget.

@@glenbo2464 That's him! Sorry, I was mistaken - his was indeed a 300, but the first year of the lower powered non-letter series (1962) with a 383. I did have to go refer to pictures he had uploaded of his cars. I guess I was thinking no 413 or dual carbs / cross rams meant no 300, forgetting about the non-letter car's existence. It's not a very big world we're living in here, either way. Haha.

Being a tall guy myself I always loved big Chrysler's(I own a few c bodies today and mainly b bodies)...Never owned a big Chrysler older than 1965 for myself as a daily driver,but my 66-70 C body Chrysler's beat up other muscle cars..and if I lose (rarely did) it wasnt by much.. they couldnt be to excited that they beat me as a car twice the size of theirs was right on their tail...
I did ride in one of these a car club member back in the 90's took me for a ride and he beat up a 5.0 Mustang lol that guy looked pissed off! His had 3.23 gearing and tuned to perfection..Not sure if he had a cam in it but it sure moved!
TORQUE = was the key to moving these large bodied cars of the line ! = 495 ft/lb

I have a 61 Newport. The play in the steering is probably caused by a small rubber thing between steering gear and the steering wheel shaft. It is a pain in the butt to replace, so it rarely has been fixed. Part costs about 3$ in rockauto.
That sounds familiar. I think they used that same setup through about ‘64 on the full size cars? I once installed a Firm Feel gearbox in a Dodge 880, expecting it to fix the play. Then we found out about the rubber piece… that was an expensive lesson for a small and inexpensive part.

Ahhhh heck I can’t remember what years could come with what. I’m not an expert, but I know there were three speeds available, then there was some whacky four speed available in ‘63, then the A833 was available in ‘64. None of these were common. On at least early four speed C bodies with consoles, the shifter comes out of the floor *next* to the console instead of through it. It looks like an afterthought. It’s kind of hilarious actually.
@@DeadDodgeGarage You could get a 3 speed manual trans in a G, VERY rare. You could get a French 4 Speed in an F (1960).

2:50 But it does suffer from the telltale sign of a missing PS pump bracket snubber. When the snubber is missing, it is near-impossible to fully tighten the PS belt. It will be tight enough to not squeal, but the belt can flop and rub on the water pump pulley. This bracket setup was actually quite ingenious, in that it allowed the bracketry to 'relax' when PS load was low, and when demand increased, the bracket would squirm a bit and bite the belt a bit more.
So many earlier 60s big blocks are missing that. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever actually seen one in place, now that I think of it.

Well, kind of. I see them fairly often in the nationwide Facebook groups. Mopar parts and projects (or whatever it’s called) and Mopar graveyard are a couple that come to mind. These cars are scarce, and there are probably a hundred different people ready to jump on any that come up for sale in a given area. It’s not going to be easy.

The purpose of the removable fender aprons has nothing to do with spark plug access. They exist to clear the RAM manifolds as the front clip is lowered upon the front frame on the line.
I’m familiar with the body drop. That would make sense.

Yikes. Lol. My wife tolerates a lot but that wouldn’t be a good one. Funny enough on the clock, I was test driving a convertible challenger the other day and thinking about exactly that. We go to great lengths to make sure they work (as with everything else on cars we restore,) but we also unplug every battery overnight so they’re never right.
Not only are they muscle cars, they were called 300s because they were the first cars to have 300 hp from the factory. They’re beautiful machines BUT, like you… I’m an a body guy

Every video that I film at Rocket Restorations is! Tom with Rocket helped the family sort through things after Ben passed, and organized the auction for them. I live nearby but didn’t attend the auction for some reason. After that, he ended up purchasing the property, and the business now operates from there.
