    • @wiktorwektor123
      @wiktorwektor123 Před 3 lety +4

      Tor is better for privacy but it's not better if I want to watch some video (CZcams or other streaming platform) that is blocked in your country (doesn't matter where you live). This is why I use VPN for, to pretend I'm from different country. To fool streaming services to watch content that otherwise would be painfully slow to watch via Tor. Even Tor project ask users to not watch or download huge files via Tor or network speed for everyone would be crap.

    One thing where a VPN is useful for me is to use it with Jdownloader. This is something Tor on it's own doesn't do. And as well as for NAS.
    But i still have a question about Usenet, is there any reliable service? A lot of them cost a lot and give you their "VPN", which I don't need. Because i have a better option. So i wonder should you just stay away or is there any that's worth using, many old files are going down as time goes. And I would love to archive some of the really old stuff that other websites don't touch, mostly because of DMCA or low interest.

  • @luckysupreme6462
    @luckysupreme6462 Před 3 lety

    So which one is better?

  • @NoEgg4u
    @NoEgg4u Před 3 lety +1

    These are the only reasons (that I can think of) why you should use a VPN, instead of the TOR network:
    1) Speed. VPNs will be faster than the TOR network. If your VPN service is not faster than the TOR network, then that should be straightened out with your VPN service provider.
    2) Your privacy needs are important, but not excessively so. There is no way to confirm any claims made by a VPN service. Also, unless you are an expert at international law, you have no way to really know whether or not some server in some county has reciprocal, jurisdictional agreements with your own country. So if a court orders that VPN service to keep logs, and that court includes a gag order about saving logs and monitoring, etc, then you could be monitored, etc, and never know (or get a knock on your door if/when caught doing something illegal -- which is not something you should ever do).
    3) Your understanding of all of your choices is over your head, and you do not realize the risks of using a VPN service.
    4) The internet servers, that you wish to connect to, have blacklisted TOR exit nodes. So when you use TOR, you are not able to access some sites or services. If this is the case, then unless speed is important, I suggest that you use TOR to login to your VPN service. This will stop sites and services from seeing TOR, and will allow you to connect to wherever you want to connect.
    But why go through TOR to connect to your VPN service?
    This is a good idea, if you paid for your VPN service, anonymously.
    If you connect directly to your VPN service, then the VPN company knows who you are.
    If you connect to your VPN service via TOR, then the VPN company does not know who you are (unless you did something like pay with your credit card, or signed up directly from your computer and they have your IP address associated with your account). But if you paid for your VPN service, anonymously, and did so via TOR, then the use of your VPN service via TOR will keep you anonymous and will side-step internet sites/services from blocking you.
    Should you ever go from your VPN service to TOR to the outside world?
    I can think of no reason to ever do that. I can also think of reasons why that would be bad.
    Cheers!

    • @NoEgg4u
      @NoEgg4u Před 3 lety

      @Red Rain Using VPN over TOR will ruin your anonymity, if the VPN provider knows who you are, based on your login credentials.
      If you created your VPN account via TOR, and paid with untraceable crypto currency (which is another hurdle), then the VPN provider will not know who you are.
      Under that above conditions, the only way to use your VPN service, without giving yourself away, is to do so via TOR.
      Any time you connect directly from your computer to your VPN service, the VPN company will know who you are.
      Normally, you should avoid using a VPN service, due to the ease of making a mistake while signing up and paying for the service. But if the service (let's call it "SomeSite"), that you are ultimately trying to connect to, will not allow connections from TOR, then your only choices are 1) never using SomeSite, 2) connecting directly from your computer, 3) connect from your computer to your VPN to SomeSite, or 4) connect from your computer to TOR to VPN to SomeSite.
      #4, if done properly, will, in some cases, be the only way to connect to SomeSite with anonymity. But to do #4 correctly takes expert level understanding of every connection, as well as using a secure (meaning, not Windows or Mac) operating system, as well as expert knowledge of using crypto currency.
      Most folks know little about any of the above. Some know a lot about 1 or 2 of the above. Nearly no one knows it all (including me). I know what needs to be done, yet lack the full knowledge of getting it all done. My privacy is important -- but not to the point of jumping through all of these hoops.
      Cheers!

    • @NoEgg4u
      @NoEgg4u Před 3 lety

      @Red Rain 1) If you make your browser fingerprint highly unique (or unique -- same thing), then you are defeating the purpose of trying to remain anonymous. Anyone that gives away their identity, in any way (and especially in such an amateur way), will never remain anonymous on-line. They might as well log-in to facebook over VPN and over TOR, etc. Those folks probably never heard of Parot OS, or TAILS OS, or Qubes OS, or Whonix, etc.
      2) I will read the article, in the next few days.

      @lechsiz1642 Před 2 lety

      I doubt I'll need it, but have considered setting up an open-source VPN on a Pi. TOR is incredibly slow. Can you think of negatives? i know a bit about fingerprints already (in my home tests, Brave browser did better than FF and I saw that my danged fonts made my fingerprint very, very unique) and some of the other identifiers.
      Any advice on this Pi idea of mine?
