Photographing and editing skin tones can be a difficult task. Take them too far, and they saturate quickly, but don't take them far enough, and you could have lifeless skin. A fine balancing act exists for proper skin tones between on-location lighting and post-editing.
BUT! Imagine having the power to make skin tones flawless, natural, and perfectly matched with just a few clicks. That's what I'm bringing to the table today. We'll use Photoshop's new gradient tool and some hand-crafted skin tone gradients to get the PERFECT skin tone every time!

Great piece of knowledge Blake!!! I have been practising a little bit with your fundamental proposal and I think it is very useful for my workflow. I think it is specially useful if you want to normalize and/or normilize the skin tones with for example the clothes colors... Perfect fot that!!! Many thanks for sharing. Keep it this way my friend... Keep in touch from Spain!
Working my way through the New Greadients course - Beyond Color - as usual, great stuff. Thank you for this short primer on skin tones, very helpful in so many ways. - Great job.....
Thank you for this video, instructions and gradients! Just what I needed for a project.
Blake, just finished the new gradients course. I will get on the site and review it, but let me say here that is is a FANTASTIC course. You completely demystified the tool and now have me excited to go back and revisit all of those photos that I set to the side because I just couldn't figure out where to go with them. I plan on rewatching, which I do with just about all of your courses to validate that I got everything that you put out. The actions are great and provide a streamlined way to get it all set-up to allow my creativity to get to work. Thanks!
Awesome! I am so glad you enjoyed it :) Your enthusiasm for it is inspiring! Thanks for the great feedback!
Thank you for the palette! It was very easy to add to my gradients. 🙏
Great tutorial, a lot of options that can be really handy for a photographer, thanks
Great video! Most generous to offer the download. I look forward to completing your gradient course!
😁 my pleasure! Enjoy!
Been using gradients to enhance/correct skin tones for some time but I like the way you used the radial option to match the shape of the face.
Great stuff! thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the gradients! Fantastic, as always!
Glad you like them!
Thank you very much and congratulations for your work
Thank you. good knowledge. Love it
Great, detailed video explaining different options. Working on portraits can be challenging because in the end, it's what the subject likes. 😉 You presented many options which can be helpful when trying to narrow down the final look. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Clients can be tricky. Just give them a suntan gradient :) haha
Thank you for the free skin tones. Great tutorial
Blake, thank you my friend. You did an excellent job! God bless you.

Finally a video on skin tones. I struggle with this, and CZcams doesn’t have good tutorials on this
Glad you found this one :)
There are a TON of PS experts with CZcams channels but I've used more of your tips than any other. You do a great job. Thanks.
That means more to me than you'll ever know 😁 thank you, thank you!
Jumped out half-way through to do a quick test on a shot from a model shoot I did a couple of months ago and 'Wow' what a game changer!
Boom! I love it :)
Cheers Blake, very instructive and great gradients. Thank you.

@@f64Academy I had an awesome time learning I can't wait to see your other videos. I'm very particular with skin tones specially when taking picture of Asian models. This technique will help me a lot in my post. Thanks again. Cheers!

Such a serious upgrade in skin tones handling! Thanks Blake :)
Right? I was pretty shocked myself there!
@@f64Academy Really? With all your Photoshop mastery you can be still shocked? Impressive!
@@MikeRouallo yep 🤣 I get VERY excited over little things and little tweaks that can make a tool more versatile. I'm a nerd 🤣

Bro thanks alot
Always welcome :)
Thanks

Thanks for the great explanation, really helpful. Changing skintones is clear now, can you give me some hints on how to create the right skintone. So what is the best way to get the skintones exactly how they were for that person.
I'm already making sure the whitebalance is correct with a grey-card or expodisc ; is a color checker passport the only way to achieve this (or do it by memory and hope you get it right)?
Those are the two best ways to get it right while on location for sure. But, there are other variables, like is your subject light skinned on a dark background or dark skinned on a dark background, or vice versa for each. The brain is fooled easily, so a light skinned person on a dark background regardless of the passport and grey card will APPEAR lighter to the eye simply because of the background. That's where this technique can come in handy to add more life and color to the skin tones.
@@f64Academythanks a lot, will certainly use your technique in those cases
As always very helpful and rich in information! Thank you so much Blake! Again I would like to ask you if these packs can be used in editing paid works? God bless you and good luck!
Sure thing, license free. Enjoy them.
@@f64Academy Thank you SO MUCH Blake!
Hello sorry if I use the translator, but at least I can tell you that in this tutorial there is something brilliant! Thank you.
Ciao
Thank you very much!
Think you sir☺
My sincere pleasure
thanks for the video about skintones. my question is is the texture of the skin adjusted because you go over it with a kind of brush?
No, that's just the mask to erase parts of the gradient I didn't want in the.
Thanks so much for this😊😊
Certainly 😁
@@f64Academy I always struggle with getting the right skintones to be honest, it's not like they look bad, but I always want it to look better than the way it came out. For example the stock image you used, it's like I get that as a result, but I want them to look better than that. Just for example.
I have a question, when you were selecting the gradient you had the Reverse option ticked, was it a mistake or it was meant to be like that?
@@mamaadura9831 it may have needed to be reversed to get the bright part of the gradient in the middle. It really depends on the Gradient used target than the button.
Hello, sorry I am here again, you know when you clicked gradient and then you selected one of your gradients and the clicked on the face and it created another layer on the background?
Mine is not creating another layer, it's doing it on the background itself. And it automatically does not allow me to change blend modes or opacity or anything.
I am using the 2023 Photoshop version not the latest version though
Wow
very good
Thank you 😁
Nice
Thanks!
An interesting idea would be to swap the colors of people with fair complexions to dark in reverse order on the photo.
I don't think that would look right and for the most part you aren't trying to change their skin color as much as you're trying to emphasize their skin color and bring life into the tones. You are better off using this subtly than to try and change skin tone altogether.
nice
Thanks
This guy is amazing at photoshop 😮
Thank you 😍 I greatly appreciate that!
hi can i use this gradient pic?
I cant get the gradients link to work. Thanks
Question, would it be best to use this tool on a Raw image? Or do I adjust the color of the overall image in Lightroom and then do this step?
Good question, but since its a gradient with special blend modes it must be done in Photoshop. This is best used as a finishing effect.
@@f64Academy Thank you!
How can i customize my Photoshop layout like you have ?
In the upper right corner there is a workspace drop-down. Select photography. Then go to window and add whatever windows you'd like to your workspace.
Hey! I hope you can take this as constructive feedback. You have been doing this a long time and your tutorials are fantastic. Your audio is good, but there is a problem, in my opinion and according to my ears, with the high end of your voice. It just has a lot of what I would call "sizzle". It isn't really a huge problem if the video isn't too wordy or long, but after a minute of listening it is just hard on my ears. I assume that if it is for me, it probably is the same for others. I watch a lot of tutorials like these and, while your tutorials are top-notch in all other regards, I have hoped for a long time that the high-end of your voice is tamed in post production. Thanks for your work here!
Thank you! I'll look into it for sure and see what could be causing that audio discrepancy.
Fantastic technique. Thank you for the free gradients!
Agreed!!
@@f64Academyequalize audio towards the low frequency to get rid of “tingy” sound or watch the use of a denoiser. Great vid and Goodluck!
high cut your audio could be the answer
What brushes do you use?
These ones 😁

Anything that has to do with colors !! I come here .
I love that 😁 thank you for your support!
I use cs6 version so i guess this feature doesn't work for this version in photoshop
Not this way with the gradient tool, but it will still work with the gradient editor.
Video interesante, lástima que tenga que usar los subtítulos para poder enterarme
💝
Thanks :)
I followed your link, but I can't find anything that has a bug
Can't find anything that has a bug? I have no idea what that means.
@@f64Academy I tried again and it accepted because when I entered the email it started showing me words I don't understand but now I have entered the email it has accepted to download so tenx broo
Skin tones are such a @^#%€ sometimes, pardon my french .... these gradient are awesome, really helping. Reflecting gradient really help bring attention to the centre ;-) i salute you
😁 they can be a bear, especially to get perfect. Not anymore 😁
Especially because cameras where are not designed to photograph black and brown skin
great video but you kinda proved why there's no point downloading presets... you get more accurate results (and learn more) by just doing it yourself
yep, but these aren't presets ;) ....... These are gradients. Gradients and presets are two different things.
Take a colourchecker chat then make your profile and you get correct colours
It's a good idea, yes, That's not always the case though. You can use a color passport all day long, that isn't going to help when color and tone theory come into play.
For instance, photograph a pale skinned person on a black backdrop, they will appear even lighter. The passport won't fix that 🤔 so what you'd do in post is make her skin accurate to what you saw to balance out the backdrop's tonal effect on the pale skin. The passport will help retain accurate color, yes, but it won't make the skin Pop against a background that is sucking the life out of your client.
@@f64Academy why would the skin change due to background?
you meter the light, at the model's face, looking back at the light, and then take an image with the checker, the background has no influence at all. the only way the background could have any bearing is if you use TTL flash - not recommend at all if you want good colour.
@@chazM6116 it's tone and color theory when a dark color or tone surrounds a lighter color or tone, the lighter color or tone appears lighter even though it's not. It's an optical illusion in the viewers brain.
To offset that you must do something in post production to make that lighter color or tone stand out. Color theory/tone theory 101
I'm sure you now by now, your AI Photoshop video comments got turned off - good luck with that.
Yeah, why good luck with that? I'm sick of hearing everyone's negativity. I don't need negativity in my life. All I'm doing is posting about new features and giving incredibly good advice about alternatives (I'm biased) which everyone expects, but this one is out of hand and everyone is shooting the messenger. I don't need luck when I don't see it. It's out of my life 😉
jesus christ the amount of PS on those women is gross
I don't think Jesus Christ needs to be involved, but okay.
