In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Kid A album by Radiohead.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician, on the road at age 17 for two years, then went part-time ever since, while holding day careers including chef and spiritual health care while raising a family.
As a producer I've made hundreds of my own songs for media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I mostly abandoned the prog genre in the 90s but have returned to it now with vigour 30 years later. So much prog! My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk / acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electronic as well).

Jonny Greenwood, the lead guitarist, started experimenting with obscure instruments during this period. One such instrument is the Ondes Martinot, which is basically a theremin with a keyboard, you can hear it prominently on The National Anthem and How to Disappear Completely. Its such a beautiful sounding instrument, I recommend looking up videos of how its played.

I had seen Radiohead in concert a half a dozen times by the time Kid A came out. I was confused when I first heard it. I knew the band was always evolving and hated tracing their own footprints, but this was so odd. Now it stands as my favorite album. Almost a quarter century later, Radiohead still seems ahead of their time.

I remember at the time it was such a change of sound, yet in hindsight it wasn’t. All the signs were there on OK Computer that something like this was coming. It must have blown your mind at that age, it did mine and I was 17.

@@anthonysharps6933 It truly shocked me. My friends and I were into grunge in high school, and didn't want to listen to anything else. This album threw pretty much everyone for a loop when it came out. I already liked a bunch of Warp Records music, and some ambient techno things, so I enjoyed it straightaway. Very Brian Eno and Aphex Twin-esque in spots, and was such a daring move for a rock band at that time.

Drums stopping for a bar or two was very popular in EDM from the late 80's Acid House / early 90's Rave scene. I've had it explained to me that those high on ecstasy get a rush when this happens. From Kid A onwards, Radiohead occasionally incorporate a few elements from dance music. Thom is a bit of a raver and has been to known to DJ at clubs. Also said he was obsessed with Aphex Twin in interviews.

This album pissed me off so much I boycotted them for a year then I gave them one more chance when Amnesaic came out which was the stuff that did not fit on Kid A (but I did not know that) I bought that and did not like that either so I boycotted them for like 10 years. I just happened to catch the basement session for their brilliant record In Rainbows and listened to Radiohead for like a year straight and got in to all the records I disliked and the other ones I missed and now I put them up there with the Beatles and Floyd or Zepplin I think they will probably be the last really great band as the music industry has changed so dramatically.

@@deanwolfechannel That would be awesome. I always rate The Bends, Ok Computer, and Kid A as 1A, B, & C, in no particular order just depending on mode I guess. You really get to hear a once-in-a-generation type band grow from really good to great sort of like the Beatles going from love-me-do pop to psychedelic experimental rock in those 3 albums. The Bends is more of a poppy Rock album with actual radio-friendly songs so you'll probably not like it as much but its definitely a stronger Album than anything in their discography besides OK & KidA IMHO.
