We don't have seafood boil in New Zealand. But we eat lots of seafood. In summertime we go diving for paua and crayfish and mussels and kina. Growing up my ex husband was raised on seafood in the weekends his dad would take him and his brothers to get pipis. Alot of poor families ate alot of seafood when i was growing up the sea supplemented their food pantry. 🙏❤️ but families that weren't poor ate seafood alot too.

I’m a 50yr old southerner who’s cooked seafood boils and been to lots of seafood boils. We did seafood boil for Father’s Day. I have NEVER made it with or eaten it with eggs or vegetables other than corn. How people in South Carolina make seafood boil… In a large pot combine water, seasoning like Old Bay or a bag of Cajun mix, a beer or more depending on how much boil you’re doing, and quartered lemons or limes. Bring everything to a boil. Add potatoes and sausage then crab legs, corn(if the corn is fresh you may need to add it before the crab legs) crawfish and shrimp. Add food ingredients as each item is almost done so you don’t overcook anything. The crab, frozen ears of corn and the shrimp cook pretty fast so they go in last. If you do crawfish, or clams watch them carefully they cook fast and can get really mushy. Set aside a bowl of Old Bay or Cajun mix to sprinkle over the entire boil once you take it out of the water. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over boil, sprinkle spice mix over it and serve. 🤤

I’m from northern New England, along the coast. I grew up with lobster and clambakes right on the beach, then I moved to the Chesapeake and learned to love steamed crab feasts. My Vietnamese friends taught me about crayfish in New Orleans, but I’ve never had a seafood boil. I’ll have to give this a try. Thanks Sansa!

I’m from S Louisiana, boiled seafood is a way of life. 😂
I use “Louisiana crawfish, shrimp & crab boil” powder, a cap full of the liquid & we season our water til we are sneezing. Then you add in potatoes, garlic, onion, lemons, oranges, corn, mushrooms, asparagus, then the seafood of choice.
We generally boil outside in a massive pot so we share.
We generally boil 1 type of seafood at a time because the seasons & pricing as well as availability of the seafood. We are leaving crawfish season, and opening crab season. Who cares about Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring… we had crawfish, crab, Mardi Gras seasons down here. 😂
Where I am happy about crab season- blue crabs- hurricane season (which is now) sucks!
There’s been flooding in grand isle already from that Alberto.

I Love love love Cajun boils. Your suggestions sounds great too. Also, Artichokes in with the boil will make you forget about anything else for a little bit. Lol.
Probably gonna be a lot of flooding in La and other gulf coast states this summer so stay safe down there.

@@bethanythepaleone we have thrown in so many things. We’ve done artichokes, boudin, boiled eggs, canned veggies (peel off the wrapper, poke some holes, dump out the liquid, and throw in the can), but I think the weirdest thing, that actually worked was a whole pineapple.
      Thanks!

I'm not one for dipping sauces, I like to just taste seafood (and steak, and .. and...) .. but the broth from a boil is awesome frozen in ice cubes and stored in bags, readily available for many recipes especially soups.

I love how meals are called different things around the world.
This reminds me of a hot-pot style, with a twist.
I’ve had other ones that are like this, but the names are just for local dishes -west side wash up (cause it “washed up” on the shore, “lazy stone soup”, etc.
It looks fab and I hope it tasted fresh and satiating!

Dad used to make something called lobster salad. Basically: stew veggies (potatoes, peas, corn, carrots, etc) on a platter w/lobster stripe down middle + lettuce & onion salad stripes on both sides of lobster (veggies & salad prepped w/olive oil & vinegar) + squeezed lemon juice over everything + thin layer of mayo +
Decoration over mayo: boiled eggs separated yolk & whites & passed thru mesh strainer to create confetti. the white & yellow egg confetti used for simple patterns.
boiled, sauteed or breaded shrimp around bottom of platter.
this was my birthday request every July.

Lol I would definitely wanna eat this but Ill probably never unless I become rich cause 1, we cant just buy snowcrab where I live & though we have our own beautiful Swedish crab, the cheapest currently is about 22 dollars for 1! Crayfish is probably the cheaper option but still pretty pricey. Unfortunately such shellfish along with shrimps, are not cheap here. But have had an amazing seafood platter when on a cruise once, so tasty!
