  • 50% of all new cars sold worldwide are Pickup trucks of varying sizes. If you consider the popularity of bakkies in South Africa and throughout Africa, this is obviously a critical market sector for any manufacturer who wants to achieve overall sales success.
    Peugeot have a long history in the bakkie market, starting with the 202 in the 1930's through the 403 and the very successful 404 in the 1970's that was even built in SA. The 404 was often referred to as the "Champion of Africa" and I'm certain that there are still many running on the roads to the north.
    After a long hiatus, Peugeot have launched the Landtrek, a model that they will sell in may markets excluding Europe. Developed in partnership with Changan in China but built to Peugeot standards and specifications. There will be more models added to the range but at this stage the launch was of the Double Cab versions in 4x2 and 4x4 variants.
    Both models are powered by a 1.9l 4 cylinder turbodiesel motor providing 110kW and 350Nm matched to a very smooth 6 speed automatic transmission. According to Peugeot SA research, 50% of bakkies sold in SA fall into the category of 100-120kW so they have chosen their segment very carefully.
    Both models come very highly specced as standard, aiming squarely at the popular and lucrative leisure market. Active cruise control, lane keeping assist and 6 airbags are some of the features. The 4x4 version adds a 360 degree camera system that is fantastic for off-roading situations. Either showing the path in front of the vehicle, or able to show the wheels on either side.
    The Landtrek is a large vehicle. 5.3m long, 1.9m high and 235mm of ground clearance in the 4x4 model. Yet, both on the road and on a challenging 4x4 course, it proved light, easy and surprisingly agile.
    As an indication of fuel consumption, during the road section of the launch drive, the 4x2 showed 8.6l/100km and the 4x4 8.9l/100km.
    Although many questioned the 110kW as being low, I never felt that it was lacking in power on the road and managed of number of overtaking manoeuvres with ease. The same applied to tackling the 4x4 course.
    Launch prices are R579 900 for the 4x2 Allure
    R669 900 for the 4x4 Active.
    A five year/ 100 00km warranty and 5 year/ 100 000km service plan are included.

    Allan, nice review thanks. The bakkie is a definite looker! I am, however, bothered by its underpinnings and understand it's CHANGAN. It's thus not a real Peugeot but cheap and Chinese ? That's definitely the reason why I will stay with Hilux.

      Every thing is made in China. This bakkie looks 100 times better than a Hi Lux. But the Toyota fan boys will stick to the brand even though they have the shortest warranty of any vehicle in SA.

    The motor specs are laughable. What are you going to pull with that thing? A smarty box on wheels? Not going to lie it does look nice but what are you going to use if for besides putting a tent on it. 2.5 liter is really the limit and anything below that is usually a glorified SUV.

  • @PreeMoo
    @PreeMoo Před 2 lety +1

    Why would someone buy this over the 2.4GD Hilux with a stronger, more powerful engine and a cheaper price tag? Be different? Sure, but at what cost? All of these double cab wonders are criminally overpriced , but this is a bridge too far, Peugeot SA.
