A diamond which could fetch up to 38 million US Dollars will go under the hammer at Sotheby's Geneva on Wednesday (11 November).
The 14.83 carat gem known as "The Spirit of the Rose" is the largest of its kind ever to appear at auction.
    STORY-LINE
Described as "flawless" this huge diamond with a pink tinge is exceptionally rare.
Dubbed "The Spirit of the Rose" it was mined in Russia in 2017 and is about to be auctioned by Sotheby's Geneva.
Yu Wenhao, Deputy Chairman of Jewellery at Sotheby's Asia describes it as:
"The largest to date for this kind. It's a fancy, vivid, purple-pink diamond, sitting at 14.83 carats, with internally flawless clarity."
It's estimated to be worth between 23 and 38 million U.S. dollars but Wenhao hopes it could fetch even more:
"So we're talking about per-carat price, the low estimation for this pink diamond is over one million US dollars per carat. And it is actually very conservatively estimated, so we hope the price will surprise us, with great demand," he says.
The Spirit of the Rose, which takes its name from Vaslav Nijinsky's ballet, Le Spectre de la rose is also classed as "wearable".
The stone was cut from a rough diamond mined in Russia in 2017 by the diamond mining company Alrosa. It had a rough weight of 27.85 carats making it the largest pink rough diamond ever discovered in Russia.
Benoit Repellin, Head of Magnificent Jewels sales at Sotheby's, says that in the last 10 years, Alrosa had discovered only four pink diamonds weighing more than 2 carats and only two of them were weighing more than 20 carats.
"It's a true wonder of nature and an amazing discovery," he says.
"So it's really something that can appeal for collectors and connoisseurs - someone who really is looking for the best of the best, and considering all the qualities of diamonds, it's a true masterpiece for a collector."
