Tyrone, it's simple. Joker is a type of his own. He has found a way to simultaneously be both a psychopath and a sociopath, while appear to be more of either one. At least that's how I see it.

There's a theory going around that the Joker has a weird form of Multiple personality dissorder, where some of his personas has certain psychosis while others do not.
Kinda late, but I remember someone describing him as not insane, but rather super-sane. Since insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
FTS Vectors That's a theory that's floating around, but i dunno how it yells with canon. The theory is that his super-sanity lets him know he is a comic book character, similar to Deadpool, and thus makes him act insane (since who wouldn't when you find out your whole life is just entertainment) while taking advantage of his own popularity to stay alive and ahead of his opponents.
Actually Tyrone it's the opposite; sociopaths are more methodical and can even appear sane. Psychopaths are erratic and are quite obviously crazy. The best example using DC villains is this: Lex Luthor - sociopath, The Joker - psychopath.
Michael Barbarian No he was right. Psychopaths are born without empathy and will mimic normal human emotions to blend in. The only thing that makes them feel alive is killing and/or cruelty. In fact, an early warning signs of ASPD is completely unwarranted cruelty towards small animals like cats or hamsters as children as well as having no friends.
Sociopaths don't care about rules.
Antisocial Personality Disorder (or psychopathy) is so called because it means one is opposed (anti) to society. Things like laws, morals, relationships are all things they see as an enemy to be stripped down and burned away. And as they get older, they get pretty good at blending in.

It has officially been stamped and confirmed that there are three Jokers as of right now. This means Snyder CAN OFFICIALLY put three Jokers in a sequel if he wants to.
The original timeline is colliding with the new timeline, and pre-flashpoint :p

Yes, there are actually 3 Jokers. In the new rebirth storyline Batman sat in the Mobius chair and asked what's the jokers real name but it told him that there are actually 3 jokers that exist in the same universe. This could also explain why sometimes the joker is more comical and not as violent, as it could be one of the other jokers. Batman is trying to figure who these jokers are and what they want.
There are currently 3 jokers in the comics: 1. The original 1940s first appearance bright purple suit joker, 2. The 1980s killing joke joker and the curren Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo crazy Joker. When Batman discovered this, he was in shock, so I doubt that Batman was ever the Joker.

The only story Tyrone could be referring to is Future's End New 52 where in the future before Terry goes back, and Tim Drake takes over as Batman Beyond to stop Brothereye, Brother Eye cuts off Batman's arm before Terry goes back and takes him and the Joker, literally MERGES their brains together into this warped, fucked up cyborg brother eye connection, where with one side Batman's head, and the other The Joker's head it's quite creepy actually yet sharing the same body.

Batman gets sent back in time. Learns he is the one who shoots his parents. If he doesn't he never becomes Batman this crime goes on. So he shoots his parents. And after is arrested later he is put in an asylum. He starts laughing and laughing and thus he becomes the Joker

In the comic books now Batman had ONE final scuffle with the Joker, leaving both him and the Joker with amnisia. Batman recovered, but the Joker did not, and he is now a man by the name of Jack. After batman got his memory back dc had an Arc called Darkseid war, where darkseid FINALLY dies and all the heros become gods. Batman became the god of knowledge temporarily, allowing him to know EVERYTHING. While he was a god, he found out that their are not ONE, but 3 jokers. So with one down, the comics have yet to explain the other 2.
I think a sociopath is someone who has no emotions... they can't really connect with people normally. They are often very methodical in their acts, like Dexter. A psychopath is the other extreme, in that they feel emotions at the highest level. They can quickly switch from extremely happy to extremely angry with no logical reasoning, which leads to highly eradicate behavior.
Everyone thinks they know what a sociopath and a psychopath are but, sociopaths are just like psychopaths. The difference is psychopaths are born without empathy; sociopaths learn this through life events such a severe trauma. Psychopaths and sociopaths can function in normal society and not be killers. Just because they don’t feel empathy and have difficulty recognizing emotion doesn’t by default make them killers
Certainly one of the most violent and intense fights in the series. A woman not only fighting but doing so in such a violent and skillful manner. It was a turn on to see it. Burton was taken to task and practically physically and mentally exhausted beyond his capacity.
