The reason why Koru's masts are around the 60m mark is because there is the Bridge of the Americas at the Panama canal which is at 62m above sea level. Any taller and it's a long way around !

The boat can not go back to the wharf in the Netherlands, because with the masts installed it can not pass certain bridges. Was also the reason why the masts were not installed at the wharf, but at the international harbour, closer to the Northsea.

Moving the boat from the yard out to sea in The Netherlands necessitated a number of major interventions to allow the ship to pass, that caused controversy in the country. I can imagine the yard would like to avoid two repeats of that commotion and also the cost of all those interventions would have been quite large.

You're level with the top of the mast when the top of the mast lines up with the horizon. Looking at the footage, I'd say you were considerably below the top of the mast. This is a trick from mountain flying, you know that you are higher than the mountain when you can look over the mountain and see the horizon beyond. Never fly towards a mountain until you can see the horizon beyond.

The top of the masts have a hinch at about 60m hight and can be folded back to get to the panamax hight which is the hight you can have to pass through. This process takes some time and has to done by professionals so it is not a push button system. These rigs are closer to 80m

Not sure those masts can be considered around 60m, judging by the horizon when the drone is flying at 60m. Estimating with a stick held against my screen, the section above the horizon is about 1/4 the size of the section below the horizon. We know that what is below the horizon is 60m, so that implies the masts have an extra 15m-ish above 60. All a bit rough, but I think we can be reasonably confident they're closer to 70m than 60m

Navy ships do the exact same thing. After they’ve been delivered to the Navy and used for several months, they go back into the ship yards to have items fixed, replaced, upgraded, etc… to meet changed requirements for the ship since it was first conceptionalized and bid on by the ship yards. The ship is first built to the original specifications, then it gets changed to the updated specifications after it’s been delivered to the Navy. Frankly, having served in the Navy, I think it’s a huge waste of money. The ships should be built to the upgraded specifications the first time around.

If i want to recuperate or built my own boat it's not possible for the interest of a country. If those yachts were not so big there is a beautiful way from Marseille, France by the river and canals to the Netherlands via Germany or Belgium. He’s flown back to Italy. Unlikely his plane would fly across the Atlantic without him. Also the yachts wouldn’t be laid up in a shipyard if he was onboard.

Bezos koru sailboat design very likely has a center board ballast keel which is typical and of course a bulb. For biw wave technology. A better design would keel the headsails with a French keel that is deepest point is at the midpoint between the mast and forestay of the largest sail. Then straight back to the shallowest point which is the stern the ballast would be in the same location and wt but doesn't interfere with the keeling design stem to stern academic keeling design. This design reduces heeling over and increases speed while improving rudder control in high wind.

I found the problem. The builder didn't put any water in the pool. You can see the dry hole on the poop deck. Hopefully, Bezos didn't discover this after diving into it.
Or perhaps it was always the plan to do it this way, where they came ashore to get it filled with special Italian pool water.
Seriously, I'm amazed Koru is gaff-rigged. The gaffs are the smaller spars attached to the upper edges of the sails on the 3 masts. Except for some little boats, I wouldn't think the gaff rig has been used for 100 years. The Clipper Ships were gaff-rigged back in that day. Actually, Koru looks very much like a Clipper Ship under sail (except for the ugly superstructure).
For a boat like this, you want the design to start with in-boom furling. That's much more desirable than in-mast furling. They apparently figured out that there's some difficulty getting this size of sail to work properly if it has only a halyard attached to the head of the sail (without the gaff).

The Clipper ships were square-riggers, dating back to the 1830's - 1850's, give or take. Some square riggers have hermaphrodite rigs which could include a gaff rig sail. Often called "barques." To me, this vessel looks like the high end yachts from the late 1890's to around 1930, which I assume is the look the designers were going for. Those yachts had sailplans but primarily relied on their engines, as the rigs were not large enough for them to sail well.

Surely things like engines and AV aren't bespoke. How they interact with each sure, but engine manufacturer would rarely engineer an engine for a one off

Koru do have Starlink. You can see them ( two ) on top of the bridge. Stop the video at 0:49 and you see them.
I'm supriced you're not talking more about the fact that the two biggeste sailing yachts are next to each other, especially when Black Pearl have been sitting still for a long time.

Great video. Thanks for the update. Don't care for the design at all. Too much above deck structure. Other large S/Y I've seen have way less cabin superstructure. This looks like a 19th century ocean liner before the age of steam.

    • @olasek7972
      @olasek7972 Před rokem +1

I thought the exact opposite, very handsome design because (among other things) it has much less superstructure than other S/Y that are too ostentatious and look like floating wedding cakes.
