When I'm having trouble getting motivated, I set timers. If I want to sit and knit or whatever, I set a 15 minutes timer. When it goes off, I set another during which time I go do dishes, laundry or whatever I can fit into that 15 minutes. Even if I'm not done, I can quit(but I usually finish what I'm doing). I can get a lot done in 15 minutes!

I find sometimes my emotions play a huge part in my productivity! If I have something on my mind that’s bothering me or maybe I’m not feeling very well....those two things can really influence my activity level! So I try really hard to always break tasks down into small increments and as you say....I am more likely to accomplish what needs to be done. Then my mood improves and my day seems successful! Our thoughts are soooo powerful!

A few weeks ago my whole house felt completely out of control and the worse it got, the less I felt like cleaning. In the end I just had to. I took a whole day and I set a timer for 1 hour in each room (or group of rooms) . Whatever I didn't get done in the hour I left. I managed four hours over the course of the day, interspersed with other things like emails and laundry. I'd cleaned the kitchen, the bathrooms, the bedrooms and the living/dining room. I should have taken one more hour to finish off (I have a small home) but I'd had enough by then. I did feel much better though.

For me switching from one task to the other every 10 to 15 minutes works fantastic! Last Sunday I worked through a to do list with about ten bigger tasks (like decluttering in different areas, installing hooks to a wall, rearranging the shelves in our basement, offering stuff at an online market place...) and tackled every task for 10 min and then went on to the next. I did almost three cycles through my list and was highly productive. I first thought the permanent interruption would disturb my flow but now I love changing the task after 10 min and dive into the next one. And when I am back to a task I have already worker on, I even feel kind of happy and excited that I now may continue where I had to stop! In can feel like a fun game! 😃

I found that one of my struggles is that I’m just plain tired. I’ve learned that when my body is telling me that I need more sleep, to just give it what it needs. I may take an extra long nap, or sleep in longer in the morning. I used to lay there feeling guilty, that I should get up and get busy, or that I’m creating a bad habit of being lazy. But I’ve learned through experience that I get way more accomplished if I listen to my body first. When I’m well rested, I have the right mindset and the energy/motivation to tackle the tasks of the day. So my tip is to not feel guilty if you need to take a morning or afternoon of rest. Give yourself a break so that you can hit the ground running when your body and mind are sufficiently rested!

I do a very abbreviated form on Getting Things Done.
    1) I write down anything that pops into my head immediately , I never try to remember anything because the brain is not for filing.
    2) I sort this list into four categories:
    (i) Errands/shopping list,
(ii)Things that I need to talk with someone about before I can do them.
    (iii) Someday/Someway..dreams.
(iv) For the rest of the list: if it can be done in three minutes or less I do it right away. For everything else I write down the first action step that needs to be done to get it started. This turns a vague to-do list into actionable activities. So much easier.
I love this technique, it has made me so much more relaxed.

I used to tell my kids when they took piano- start with the scales to warm up their fingers and hands. Then start with the newest hardest piece. Start with the hardest measure(s) of that piece. And try to unsnarl them. Work on that hard piece for 5-10 minutes. Then go to some that they are currently working on but that are coming along. Then finally play some music that they are accomplished at. And play for fun! That is exactly how I work my day and my to-do list. Hard stuff first. Just like you said, I might not get the whole project done but I work on the hard stuff first. Then switch to some things that are already coming along. Then a little fun. :)

amen, Sarah Luczyk, I wonder if we set the 5 min., thing, then rest 5 min and look at the difference (perhaps make before and after pics), that we can then go another 5-7 minutes that same one hour period? Seeing the results makes the difference....

Thank you; this was perfect timing! I've been trying to bust through a wall of inertia due to winter blahs or something. A few days I forced myself to do something mindless, simple, and physical, like sweeping the kitchen floor. The results were rewarding and helped me feel better. I stayed up after everyone had gone to bed to do it, even though I'd had all day and couldn't seem to get anything done. That "change of scenery" with no distractions helped. I've also come to realize (at least according to my family ;-) that my schedule is really full again, so *anything* extra feels really hard. After a day on the couch with a bad head cold, I chose to take my family's advice and cut back. Despite the things I'm involved in being *good*, I need a short season of hyper-focus on a couple things (like minimizing before summer) that will enable me to be MUCH more productive and involved later. Your shortened To-Do List has also helped me redefine victory in my day and helps combat perfectionism. As always, you're a blessing; thanks again!

I find I get more done if home alone, I spend time drinking coffee and checking emails ( mostly deleting ones I don't need) and then wroking for at least a hour on stuff I need to do. If I'm off I try and plan a meal for later on. I spent alot of time on computer, but putting music on and doing housework helps. Some days I just need rest.

Great tips. Thinking of mood and energy, don't dismiss underlining health issues. A walk may be good but if someone is not ever getting over a hump, they may need a Dr visit. Labs, vitamins/supplements, good food, good sleep... Neurotransmitter deficiency are real; sleep disorders are real. Hormones get out of wack, etc. Be real with yourself.

The most helpful thing I've done in the past few years is to complete the tasks I dread most, first. When I'm crazy busy in the summer I use an ipad for work rather than my laptop and don't have any other apps on there, no social media and no using Google, just work files and emails; this helps me to switch off from work too because I work from home a lot but if I'm not on the ipad, it's not work time. I also have a separate work phone, with no apps.

I found that really thinking about what's worth my attention, what it is that is causing the most stress, and then simplifying my systems as far as they can go has been a huge help in boosting my productivity. Once I got everything to a bare-bones routine I could then add tasks back in our cut some out that weren't a good use of my time. I run my home very similarly to the fly lady system, but just because some people swish their toilets every day doesn't mean I have to as well if I don't find value in doing it.

I read Hal Enrods book "the early" morning, and since then I always get up a hour earlier then I use too. Then I also realized that my phone will track my sleep pattern, and that I actually didn't need as much sleep as I even thought. So I usually get up at 5:00 am, brush my teeth, drink a glass of water. Then I exercise, or meditate, read, journal, and then make my bed and get ready. I realized that if I do that every day during the week it actually creates a whole extra day of the week. I don't always do it both days of the weekend but the days I do I get so much more done:) Then if I get tired during the day my reward is a power nap for 20 min. But I usually don't need it.
