  • At VICE Sports we've already gone a long way to tell you that dogs are sports, but these dogs are some of the greatest athletes in the world. Dallas Seavey captured his third Iditarod title in 2015 with the help of his canine friends and has cemented his reputation as the best dog sledder in the world. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we headed up to Willow, Alaska to meet with Seavey and his 100+ dogs.

      Actually at least half of the dogs don't make it. They don't have a choice in this competition. They are forced to go further when they're totally exhausted. Don't who don't run fast enough get abandoned or killed. The breeding conditions for these dogs are horrible. As you can see they're life is nothing more than being chained up in the cold, or being forced to run. Yes dogs can love this sport, but the extremety of this particular race is 100% cruel and goes beyond what 'dogs love'. Please educate yourself with about this race with information that PETA and other wellfare organizations offer. Don't think dogs love this race, just because humans want them to.

      @the missile skud I live and work in a racing kennel that is IDENTICAL to this one. Just smaller. I have for the past three years.
      Ive travelled coast to coast racing dogs and Ive seen some of the winningest race kennels in the us and Canada.
      I trained three teams of dogs EARLIER TODAY.
      Before that I was I was a zoo keeper and I have volunteered at animal rescues. And I've done some freelance dog training.
      I don't have problem with sled dogs. I have a problem with sled dog RACING. Theres lots of holes in this. Im working on a documentary about it.
      Just because a musher wins a race doesn't mean much. It shouldn't be about winning.
      Buying, breeding, trading around dogs like pokemon. Keeping them chained up all the time to control every variable. JUST TO WIN A RACE. Its so many dogs. THOUSANDS OF DOGS, owned by like 100 people or so. And they breed more every year. These dogs careers aren't all that long. Your delusional if you think every one of those dogs is retiring to a warm loving home.
      Google "sled dog rescue" it seems every other freaking kennel identifies as a sled dog rescue? Strange.
      Jim Blair from "Eden Ethical Sled Dogs" seems to have a cool set up you can check out his website. There are better ways to do this crap. Dude is good too; he wins races.
      Sled dog racing isn't all that sled dogs are used for. They are used in denali state park, by inuits on the sea ice, people in the bush, recreational mushers. Its a great activity to do with a dog or several.
      But when your goal is to win a race, It quits being about the dogs at some point.

    I can only say, this kind of dog keeping is forbidden in my country. (Austria). They will take the dogs away from you, if you put them on a two meter chain und let them live in a barrel. It looks a bit strange for me, because we are not allowed to chain up a dog anyway. I own a pack of dogs, but they have an area, where they can run free and in the
    night they are inside, because in between 10 pm to 5 am we have to stay quiet. Night rest. If not, you get a lot of problems. It´s amazing to see all those differents.

      @@doggodoggo3000 literally, f//ck you. Go run back to Peta with that shit. That’s not even at ALL close to how they.. “make” the dogs run. They’re bred for this, they’re mixed with spitz mushing breeds and other working dogs that can run a high distance like that, such as GSP or Saluki.
      The fact that the dogs CHOOSE to run the sled, and if they don’t want too they are obviously not forced. The dogs are encouraged too, and trained too from puphood. If they literally just cannot, then boom. Retired! Not fucking killed or abused 😱! And, they can’t be indoor dogs. They’re never GONNA be indoor pets, did you not hear them say at the beginning? they can’t be treated like house pets? Cause they’re not. Those “PiSs CoVeReD” barrels are what keep the dogs from destroying everything and anything. Without the outdoor enrichment these dogs are provided with like in the video, yeah. Like terriers they would go INSANE. That’s why you never see anybody with a well trained husky. Plus, they literally have double layered fur coats and are again BRED to endure that weather.
      And, for your information, those in fact ARE pure, silky and shiny coats from most likely getting a well fed RAW diet.

      @@snotchdog I worked in dog sled racing for three years.
      And I have loads of animal care and training experience out side of racing.
      Who are these "some mushers" you are refering too? Because I hear one that alot. There are only like 50 people in the iditarod. Who are the bad apples then? if you are so freaking expert on the subject you should know.
      Ive had people tell me stuff about the seaveys like "Even the locals hate them." and thats the tame stuff.
      Dog sled racing sucks and its all the people who win that are the worst ones. This guy right here.
      Even that show on netflix "Losers" about Aly Zirkle. One guy said "The dogs are NOT their team mates. They are used like fuel to be burned in pursuit of victory"
      There are way better ways to keep these dogs. The care standard is a joke.
      Its so bad in racing you simply have no frame of reference for it. I have stories that SOUND unbelievable. Like that thing about about the seaveys teaching you how to beat a sled dog to make it run faster. I have SEEN people do that. You think it seems so freaking far fetched but its really not.
      If you whip a dog and add a verbal cue, All you then need to due is use that verbal cue and the dog remembers you whipping it. That will get endorphins flowing. The guy I work for whistled. The seaveys in their book say their cue is "hike up".
      Those PETA videos are LEGIT AF. They are so freaking accurate its insane. and one of them is litterally at dallas here's daddys house. No joke.
      That doesnt have to be your only source and you don't have to take my word for it.
      There are dedicated sled dog advocacy groups like humane mushing and helpsleddogsdotorg.
      Theres that documentary from a few years ago called "sled dogs (2016)"
      You have ME sitting here telling you as a recent insider in the industry. A REALLY small industry. Its only a few hundred people in all of the us and canada that are involved in dog sled racing. Even fewer that do it seriously and competitively.
      It really does work alot like dog fighting. The knowledge is transferable both ways. The economy is the same. The training is almost the same. Chains. Micheal Vick would know all about it and probably be a good sleddog trainer. I mean that 100%.
      Frankly, I understand the appeal to dog fighting alot more after working in racing. It had utility in assesing dogs for hog hunting. A very long history (longer than dog sled racing thats for sure) And its cool. You don't get into dog fighting because you HATE dogs. Same is true with dog sled racing.
      Saying the sport is cruel isn't necessarily an accusation of malice. Alot of the people i met in dog sled racing were col and nice AF. Doesnt mean the sport is okay though. Thats group think and confirmation bias.
      TBH im shocked that VICE made this. And about this musher in particular too! It just seems like lazy journalism on their part. Its not unbiased. And it whitewashes the subject of the story. Vice is usually better than that.

      And those “some mushers” are- some mushers lmao. Not every musher is on the media, there’s many off camera that do some crappy shit to the dogs. Like how at the Iditarod they’d sometimes find truck loads of dead huskies.
      What IM saying is yes, long sled dog races like that are DANGEROUS. Not bad.
      Normal MUSHING, is literally normal lmfao.
      The dogs are bred for this reason and can’t be “used” for anything other. People have done this in arctic regions sense before time, I think they know what their doing.

    Hi there,I am about to ask you a odd question but I would really appreciate a response. You see I have a medical condition where I am very sensitive to the sound of barking dogs and I am currently trying to sell my house right now because I cry alot over barking that goes thru all my walls and no room is safe I wake up at all hours of the night and never get sleep. I was thinking of moving to Alaska and getting five or ten acres to escape dog barking from tormenting me and my much needed human sleep.
    What kind of breeds of dogs do mushers typically use? Is it a Malamute and a Husky by chance? Because I think those breeds might have less abrasive barks compared to some others and, sometimes howl instead of bark, and if I am on enough acreage maybe its more like hearing distant yapping instead of a abrasive bark that haunts me everyday thru the walls. I would appreciate a response from anyone with information because I have suffered for over a decade over living next to dogs, and owners that let them bark at all hours of the night outside . Does anyone live near mushers on like five acres and do you hear them? Do you still have peace on your property? THank you so much

      It only takes one kennel with 150 dogs to disprove your theory about all sled dogs retiring as pets. Im pretty sure most retire to a chain or giving rides in the bush until its more cost effective to shoot them.

    Iditarod is very cruel to dogs.
    FACTS: Sled Dog Action Coalition

    • @OneDirection0512
      @OneDirection0512 Před 6 lety +16

      It is not the Iditarod that is cruel. It is some mushers. There are bad mushers as there are bad pet owners and those mushers need to be stopped. The majority of mushers however love their dogs, live for their dogs and probably would not be alive anymore if it was not for the dogs.
      Musher who abuse their dogs get disqualified from basically all sled dog races around the globe with immediate action and have to give away their dogs. The problem is that stuff that's normal to such athletic sled dogs is presented as cruel.
      I just checked out your sled dog action coalition "source" and most of it is total bullshit.
      For example there is a picture of a 20 or so dog team infront of an ATV with a headline like "Iditarod dogs having to pull heavy ATV". First, most times when training with ATVs the musher actually drives the ATV in order to keep the dogs at a realtively slow, reasonable pace so the dogs are not even pulling the ATV. Second, do you have any idea how much weight 20 of those dogs could pull? One ATV, in some cases even used without the engine, is total peanuts! They could pull a truck if they wanted to, without effort.
      Forcing sled dogs to live a life other than the life of a sled dog would be the most cruel thing that could be done to them.
      So maybe you want to start fighting against the abuse of pet dogs, because I can assure you that the average Iditarod dog is happier than the average American pet dog.

    • @margeryglickman6883
      @margeryglickman6883 Před 6 lety +2

      You should read the material on the Sled Dog Action Coalition website. Anyone who races dogs in the Iditarod is an animal abuser. Anyone who forces their dogs to live on chains is also an animal abuser.

    • @OneDirection0512
      @OneDirection0512 Před 6 lety +13

      Margery Glickman you seem to be really good at generalising things. No, not everyone who races dogs in the Iditarod abuses animals. That is just completely wrong.
      Yes, there are people, who are mistreating their dogs, and the Iditarod and dog world is doing pretty much everything possible to stop those people and save the dogs.
      But I guess you are someone who would also say that everybody who is running the Iditarod is in there for the money.
      I worked as a handler for a Quest musher who is a vegetarian and could not care more about the wellbeing of her animals. And that is the case with every other musher we have met too.
      So please tell me, how do you think sled dogs should live? Or do you think there is no such thing as a ‚sled dog’ because they all just get forced to run?

    • @OneDirection0512
      @OneDirection0512 Před 6 lety +5

      Also the ‚facts‘ on that website you mentioned are so badly researched it is obvious whoever put that all together has never really worked with sled dogs or even participated in any kind of race. It is always easy to judge things you have never experienced yourself.

      Tell me, would you keep 100+ dogs inside of a yurt??? Huskies are built to withstand the cold. My huskies would stay outside for hours in the snow if they could. I see dog houses with straw for them to make their beds. Most mushers would kill a dog that could no longer run, such as the 3 legged retiree. They all have tails wagging, and you mean to tell me that that looks like cruelty to you? Looks like Dallas keeps very good care of his dogs. Especially since he spent about sixty thousand dollars on two thousand pounds of dog food.

    • @OneDirection0512
      @OneDirection0512 Před 6 lety +12

      Do you know what cruelty is? Keeping a husky, an athlete, in a city house and walk them like 2-3 hours a day. I have worked with Alaskan Huskies and most of them do not want to go inside a house. Sometimes we had to bring one in and they hated it and starting panting within seconds because it was way too hot for them. Of course wooden dog houses would look much nicer but considering how fast some pups chew up their houses I can understand Dallas doesn't want to build 100+ dog houses a year. And the chains are necessary to prevent dog fights and make sure the dogs rest between runs. The dogs have got straw, individual shelters, high quality food and a ton of exercise, which is all these hard working buddies need.
