    Yes before I went from the nike/ cargo short getup (I'm in 10th grade) to not exactly suiting because that'd be illogical for a primarily school student, but dressing up more, In between I went thru a street style phase, (picked up some fly joggers, and some outlandish hoodies😂) I realized I took interest in my clothing because I needed it to help with my self confidence and I also realized I was most confident the few times I actually wore suits, so i figured maybe if I knock it back a few notches and invest in some quality casual button downs maybe I'll get the same effect? And HALLELUJAH IT WORKED, I'm not saying I'm the most confident guy in school, but I've made bounds from where I started.

    Unfortunately when building a wardrobe you have to be prepared to understand that it never ends . And also getting older now I have noticed that i do focus on the minimalistic looks and basic essentials more because the stuff that's out there doesn't always make you look better

      It is. At some point you'll reach a point when these youtube videos just repeat themselves and already know all you need to know. At that point I think you should stop watching these CZcams Channels and just dress the way you want.
      At the end of the day they are just clothes.

    I am in the midst of upgrading my wardrobe from the sort of ready-to-wear garments you describe in the video to those that are of a higher quality and better fit. It brings me great pleasure to know that I will save much in the way of time and money by applying these invaluable lessons. Thank you for the brilliant content as always Tanner!

    I am a year and a half into my style journey and most of these points hit home. Especially when you said Rakish archetypes love bolder clothing. My summer wardrobe looks amazing but I wish I spent my money on more versatile items considering how low my budget is right now for clothing. I wish this video was out back in March because it took a whole summer of style mistakes for me to realize the first two points. Don't get me wrong, I love my summer clothes but they won't help me in the long run. Superb video Tanner; I've really grown to love your content!

    Love this. I started my style journey the other way. I was already making decent money and as I learned about the importance of quality I decided to dive right in and buy moderately expensive items. Some of it I do not regret; my peacoat and a few of my shoes and shirts are incredible and I love wearing them. However, as I started to brush up against that point where I was unsure about whether or not certain pieces would truly work for me it became intimidating to spend a lot of money on something that I might end up hating, so I sort of stalled out and ended up with a half-done wardrobe of really nice items that gets the job done but is absolutely not complete for all situations.
    I think I will try your approach and start cheaper so I can experiment in those areas before I go for the big purchases. Thanks for the video!

    Great video! I like to think that you have to build a wardrobe and that you cannot buy a wardrobe. Well yes you do buy all of the pieces, but it takes time and research to figure out what you need and what you like. Yes, you can go drop a few thousand and buy a lot at one time, but even then, think of all the seasonal essentials you would miss out on (you're probably not going to get a heavy weight wool trouser from Banana Republic in June). Two years later, I am still buying essentials a piece at a time. My advice for anyone worrying about money is to sign up for e-mail lists of companies that you like. Some post discounts weekly and others only a few times a year. But this reinforces the idea that wardrobes are built over time and not bought.

    • @MasculineStyle
      @MasculineStyle  Před 7 lety

      Great advice on how to save money. I'm also of the opinion that a wardrobe needs to be built, not bought. Thanks for the comment!

    If you’re on a budget then go to charity shops. You’ll have to dig and be persistent but you would be amazed what you find in them. Also, if you find something with the label cut it then it’s brand new. High end brands donate but don’t want their name associated with thrift so they cut out the label. If you find that then it’s high end or decent and never been worn before.

It's just so tempting to try different looks in other colours, that I haven't been able to commit to just upgrading the items I love to wear.

    I bought a Suitsupply navy blue short sleeve polo. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't necessarily expensive either ($80). I bought it to see how much use something like that would have in my wardrobe. Sadly, that shirt shrunk & I gave it away, but I learned how much use something like that has in my wardrobe. So I recently bought a Burgundy long sleeve polo for ($200) from reputable menswear brand. I sorta went a bit rakish with the Burgundy, but I can fit it into my wardrobe just as much as the navy polo. I always recommend going cheap before jumping into something expensive.

    Love the Vid Tanner I know you discussed that you can get more wear out of the staples I to am realizing that as I am growing in style. My question is how many times in a row can you where the suit at I will say a month, I agree that the more memorable about fits you should space out and I love staple suits because a change of shirt, pocket square, tie, etc. changes the look but how much is too much?

    • @MasculineStyle

      It honestly depends. Look at someone like Don Draper. He only wore about three variations of suits to work for the full run of Mad Men. His casual attire was much more varied and interesting, but his work suits were almost always the same - day after day, week after week, year after year.

    Tanner I think we all go thru this journey when were trying to figure out our style because that's exactly what i did when i was into street wear i would buy trendy clothes from H&M and Forever21 because i knew they weren't going to be in style next season. Im glad i didn't spend a lot of money on street style because my style has completely changed and now that i know who i am and my style i can invest real money on the things i really like. I do have a question tho if you go from a waist size 34 to a 32 do your jacket shoulder size change as well?

    • @MasculineStyle
      @MasculineStyle  Před 7 lety

      Great question. I assume you're talking about the waist size in your pants, correct? If so, it's not a guarantee that your jacket and shoulder size will increase. I know plenty of guys who pack on 10 lbs and it only goes to their belly and lower back - no change in their chest or shoulders whatsoever.

    • @TooFresh3o5
      @TooFresh3o5 Před 7 lety

      Kelvin Oasis the return is phenomenal. You could actually save money by buying high quality clothes and dressing well. For instance, the guy who dresses well is going to make a better first impression than the guy who dresses like shit. Good first impression = easier to network. Networking = Higher status & (financial) opportunities . Do you see where I'm going with this? Clothing is a legit investment. The return is phenomenal.

    • @Mr_Shote
      @Mr_Shote Před 7 lety

      Thanks Alan LT for the contribution, very much appreciated. is funny that my low end off the rack suits from MARK & SPENCER and Debenhams(prices ranges from £100-£200) have gain more opportunities for me than my high end Bespoke Savile Row suits, which runs in the tens of thousands. so how do i square your point with my experiences?

    • @TooFresh3o5
      @TooFresh3o5 Před 7 lety +2

      Kelvin Oasis Most people won't be able to tell if your suit is custom or off the rack. When you pay for a bespoke suits it allows more options.
      After a certain point, you're paying for functionality rather than just aesthetics. Most people usually have 1 of the 2. You cannot wear most off the rack suits year round because they aren't functional. Also, most off the rack suits do not last very long, so whatever opportunities that suit will go away eventually. Your bespoke suits have at least a decade of opportunities to open to you, while your off the rack only has maybe 2 or 3 years. In my opinion the return on something that is custom is much bigger.

    You need to have a sheep suit before investing in the perfekt one. Practice makes perfect.
