  • OpenShot Video Editor Review!
Is the OpenShot Video Editor any good? So I have been using the OpenShot Video Editor for a few weeks and I was pleasantly surprised by my findings. Keep watching till the end so you can find out my answer about what I think about the OpenShot Video Editor.
In today's video, I will be doing a comprehensive review of the OpenShot Video Editor. I will be going over all the pros and cons of what I have experienced when using OpenShot during my testing period. However, keep in mind that this is based on my own personal experience and opinion, and I know that results may vary and other people may have their own point of view which is a good thing. I wanted to make sure that this review is as well rounded as possible so you can make your decision about what video editor is the best one for you!

It’s so cool how much open source freeware is readily available nowadays. You have Gimp for images, Audacity for audio, OpenShot for video, and LibreOffice for documents.

Openshot is fine for getting started with the basics. You will reach its limitations fairly quickly if you're trying to do any serious editing. It also has bugs sometimes, like unexplainable audio anomalies and black frames appearing for no reason at all. For basic editing it's fine but special effects are clumsy and very limited. For a free program it's not terrible though. You can learn the basics for free and there are lots of how-to videos on CZcams.

I would suggest to use animations either with a green screen background that you can key out later, or use a Quicktime MOV animation file. I haven't tested the second option yet but those are two possibilities you can try.

I dual boot Windows and Linux. I wanted to do some video editing in Linux without leaving it so I checked it out. I use Premier in windows like cs5 or something. I don't usually do complex things in the sequencer, but may in blender and then have an alpha mask. So far it seems workable, but I am used to having opacity bands in Premier that controlled fade in outs. So I need to research but something tells me it does not have them

Hi EJ Tech: Congratulations for your excellent content. I have a question for you. If I want to create a 10 minute long video in OPENSHOT, how may I set or adjust the timeline, so I can see all the minutes, and seconds, until the 10th minute, where my video will end.? Kindly appreciate your answer. Thanks. Jose.

    • @EJTech.

ive been using openshot for the past few months for my projects, and it really is just an editor. text is annoying to add, resize and so on. theres no crop feature so resizing videos and pictures is extremely tedious since you have to fiddle with the settings to get the right size. overall i rate it a 5/10, not good but not bad either,it does its job.

The most frustrating thing for me is the playhead seems to be difficult to move. While dragging with the mouse, it is constantly "sticking" and forces me to move the mouse and try again several times. Although I have hardware acceleration, it's still a bit laggy and slow. That being said though, I find it's an amazing program given that it's free.

    • @Coachfozzie
      @Coachfozzie Před 3 lety +1

I had the same issue, and found another video on CZcams that explains how to fix it. Basically you change the "preview" window to a lower resolution so it can render it better while you are still editing - which does not affect your output resolution.

I've been using PD14 that came with my new laptop that is a limmited feture program that has been good for learning but I'm having a go with Openshot and compaired with PD14 I'm finding Openshot good as its a full editor BUT. The cons I'm being challanged with include: When i bring clips in to the project the film framing when i have twenty or more clips get a bit lost with the film framing that is put around each clip meaning the clips are harder to see and blend with each other. when a clip is bought into the timeline on PD a green tick apairs that lets me know that clip is on the timeline but Openshot dose not so if i have sevral takes of the same sceen that i want to choose from it can be hard to tell which is timelined and which is not.
To preview i PD i select a clip and it loads into the preview window and i hit the space bar to view it, on Openshot i have to click the clip, open the menue, select preview, click the arrow and so on making it a five step process just to see if i want to add it. I can just add it to the timeline and view it there and delete it if i don't want it but I'm finding it a bit clunky, Good but clunky.
If I want to speed up the clip I get the option of 2,4,8+ rather than what i want or a slide bar to make it faster or slower.
I'm going to keep using it for now to see if more use makes it easier to use but though I like Openshot it feels and looks old school to use.

I've been looking for an editor, that allows me to cut the video, add a narration, and then that's it. I don't want to jinx it, but it seems to work perfectly with no errors or bugs. I've tried Clipchamp that was derping at every opportunity. I tried LightWorks Free, and it gave a 720p max resolution. It just won't do for anything anymore. This is perfect.

I downloaded OpenShot and gave it a try. I've used DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere before, but I don't do enough editing to become really good at using either of these more complex programs, so I was hoping that OpenShot might be a simpler, middle-of-the-road option for me.
However, forget it. It crashed on me constantly doing basic things, was very laggy and frequently hung when scrubbing thorough a FullHD clip. Program stability is the #1 thing I look at in evaluating software and if a program is not reasonably stable I don't go any further with my testing. (OpenShot 2.5.1 on Windows 10 with AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U w/ Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx, 2300 Mhz, 16 GB RAM).

I read the article and it basically states similar points that I made in the video. OpenShot is a very good video editing program for basic projects. In my experience most people use openshot for its simplistic use of creating good video content. However, it does lack on advance features that may be used in more advanced or "cinematic" projects.
Between Shotcut and Openshot. Tbh I feel more comfortable using Shotcut just because I have used it for a longer time and it has consistent updates and many features. I even made a tutorial on how to get that cinematic look on videos and much more. But it all comes down to what you need it for and exploring all your different options.

@@EJTech. Ah, got it. How would users add transitions in shot cut using this link: www.shotcut.org/resources/
I also use hitfilm but the downsides to that one are in the effects tab, they keep omitting the presets tab and it won't accept wmv files.. only mp4. I basically downloaded shotcut and hitfilm because I needed a video editor for my HP laptop that I have since I got rid of sony vegas. I feel more comfortable using shotcut as well.
