  • Oleg Kagan playing Schnittke's Concerto no. 3 for Violin and Chamber Orchestra (1978), with an ensemble from the Bolshoi Orchestra under Alexander Lazarev, live in Moscow in 1989. Skip to 01:45 for the start. Schnittke dedicated this piece to Kagan who premiered it in 1979. At the end Alfred Schnittke came onstage several times (29:26). The concert was a celebration of his work, and it must have been quite an event as the stairs in the aisles were completely full and people were packed into the balconies. I've also uploaded Schnittke's ballet Labyrinths from the same concert.

Thank you for posting this. Beautiful performance! I actually started to cry a bit when the maestro came onto the stage. You can see the effects of his first strokes. So humble. What a genius he was!

Find most heart-breaking, the music and the conjonction Kagan-Schnittke, specially at the end.

So sad that Kagan died just one year later than this recording.

Miraculous interpretation... Too bad that the audience didn't wait the end of music before making noise !

No ‘glasnost’ here..... no hope and change..... just gloomy despair. This is a piece for our times, but I wonder how Stalin would have taken this work? Still it his legacy.
