We installed Electric Drives, Downforce, and Speed Tubes on the planter! Electric Drives allow for optimal seed placement and will give us a picket fence stand. Speed tubes ensure that placement gets translated from the meter to the row via belt so the seeds don't tumble to the ground. Downforce ensures optimal contact with the ground to ensure proper seed depth. In just two years, we've completely upgraded the planter from front to back to be a completely different machine!

CURRENT SCHEDULE
Expect a new video every Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Andrew made a great point that I think gets overlooked alot in the "old school vs modern tech" argument . He said "you can control it in the cab, so you'll tend to change it more because you dont have to get out everytime". That's part of where the yield boost comes from, making planting to the specific conditions of every part of the field managable without costing time. I love the old iron but that doesnt mean technology has to be evil either.
Thanks for the updates! Excited to see how the planter works for ya this year!
Not a corn guy myself but this was interesting because of your cinematography. Nice to have an expert on board to explain as clearly as he does too. I really enjoy your work and try never to miss an installment. Can’t wait to see it in the field….and new tractor too! Great tease.
looks like a new planter to me! Cant wait for the 2023 planting season!:)
There is something about updating older units. Love it! I'm excited to see how it handles in the field and yields differences at harvest
Great video Ryan and Travis and great to see Dad
I think the upgrades will be a great deterrent to the forces of nature. It would be great to compare the singulation count from last year in a video.
This will help all three of you. Wishing you the best yields and computer glitch free.
Hey Ryan!! Looks like some serious upgrades for the planter. Curious to see how yields will look this fall.
Looking forward to seeing the planter in the field. Great video!! Thanks 😊.
Talk about overhauling a planter. Hope that it improves your planting capability.
Great video Ryan looking forward to seeing the planter with the new upgrades in action and the new tractor 👍
Can't wait to see how well the upgrades work. Excited to see the new tractor
You and me both!
awsome video ryan cant wait to see the new tracter and it will be usful for sure so you dont have to unhook anything thumbs up and shared
Thanks for the update Ryan on the planter and a New tractor 🚜. Take care of yourself and family ❤️❤️.
Very exciting stuff can't wait to see that planter in action and congrats on the new tractor
Really nice to see the farm expanding and looking forward to seeing the updates in action! Thanks for the video!
Hey Ryan I think the Lord is Really Blessing Yall and I am so Thankful I watch yall all the time because I am not able to farm myself, So I pray for the whole Kuster Family all the time. Take care, Take it EASY and TRUST JESUS !!!!!!!!!!
Can't wait to see the new tractor!
me too
Thanks for the update!
good that your planting will be more efficient!
With all these upgrades I sure hope you are adding more land to farm. I get getting more out of every acre but with all the efficiency more acres to pay for it all
Yes. Bought more acres.
Cant wait for the reveal.
me too
Good for u guys, u have grown to the point of needing another tractor, maybe two. But prices are not cheap and this will greatly help u guys out for more time with your families
Glad to hear you have a new tractor coming to help spread the load.
Your planning on having that planter ready to plant by next planting season right Travis and Ryan
I'm really hyped about your new tractor. It will be be a great addition to the farm. 👌
Who cares they want to make it a big reveal no one cares just show us or tell us
Thanks 4 letting us CZcams only guys about the good news.
Very jealous of electric drives. We have terraces as well (I think a bit more terraces than you (lots of curves)) (only 320 plantable so w/e). We just got someone to do GPS planting and row shut-offs this past year. It's amaze balls from where we were with just a 6 row-interplant)..
Looking forward to see the planter in action this spring😁👍 can't wait to see your videos next weekend😉👍
Wow! That’s some serious upgrades to the planter.
Have been following the Facebook page and several of those units would make a nice addition!
I'm thinking he will eventually get a 6th tractor kinda around 120-200hp range like a 4960 you always need 2-3 medium range tractors
Defiantly the 9400 very versatile but that is my opinion do to the fact I’m running bigger planter, grain carts Drills and not just using it for Tillage
I think another 8R would help alot especially when the 82 goes down or you need it to do tillage I'm thinking a tractor around 300hp would give you plenty and if someone gets stuck in the mud it would be great to have
Impecable! Mucha tecnología para el campo! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏻🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
I hope you have better luck than we did with the v drive and 20 20 than we did. We ran a planter with that arrangement for 4 years and couldn't possibly put up with it any more. Constant issues with errors and loosing communication. We have replaced it with a like new white with basic ground drive. I'm so looking forward to planting this year!
Having a good dealer and quality install goes along ways! This is a different system than you had but if you’re losing communication you have a wiring issue. I wouldn’t let a customer experience the same issue two years in a row that’s for sure!
With the upgraded planter I hope the learning curve will be short. 👍 of course 😃. Happy subscriber 😊 !
Good stuff
Cool video about the planter getting new stuff added to it but wouldn't be easier to buy a planter with a single bulk seed tank then having seed boxes?
Yes, but it may not be as budget friendly. We intend to upgrade to a CCS after a few years.
@HowFarmsWork cool will fun when ya do buy one...
Very cool...it's like a nitrous kit for a planter...faster...faster...hotrod that thing...
Should see even higher yields with the revamped planter. Congrats on the new tractor.
You will probably be driving it.
It's not what we talked about.
Mighty job Everybody, that should be the business, fair play👌👌💯🙏👍🙂
new tractor tease
How Farms work video
The Rest of the Story
It's a good day for CZcams from Wisconsin.
Order the new video today is gonna be the tractor their new tractor that they bought because Ryan said been nine years since he bought the 8235 hour but that 7930 I don’t think that’ll be able to pull the planner with all the upgrades to be doing to it because Travis said they were gonna put the 8 to 35 travis said they were going to put that on the planner and then like 3530 the bigger tractor would go like on the VT and that one didn’t have weights on it
Good content. 👍
With the planter upgrades,, you should be able to bust out fields much faster and hopefully get better yealds
thank you
absolutely, omg, amazing!
Why did you go ag leader vs precision?
Nice video !
if you have ryan on whatever the new tractor is it has front weights on it. so that rules out a few tractors
Aesthetically speaking, the 9400 would match a 12 row planter best :-)
Is the 4640 going to stay on the planter will it be able to handle it with all the stuff your adding to it?
It could handle it, but she is getting retired from the planter this year! There is a hydraulic pump that you can attach to the PTO to run the hydraulics and it has the horsepower to handle it!
Love seeing it on the planter but their is only so much a tractor can do. What tractor will go on the planter the 82 or the new tractor?
@@HowFarmsWork when tractors get older parts start wearing out and it's getting to the point where its just tired of all the heavy pulling from the planter which it's definitely not light at all. 4640 is a good tractor and I definitely see it going to hay full time in 2023 and beyond.
👍👍
You better hope that the tractor has the power to pull that 1720 planter with all that weight you just added to the frame of the planter
For the price I think you get more bang for the buck with those new McCormick tractors
Not if you don’t have a dealer close. Waiting on parts when you should be planting is very costly.
7920 JD.
Reveal already!!!
The video is almost done!
Could you add the tractor model numbers to the pictures. That would help..
I say its the 6R with the loader attachment.
I would go with an 8R with a loader attachment would be perfect if he was discing a field and saw some rocks put them in the bucket and go
@@MultiTurbospeed i think the 6R will be just a chore tractor between the 3 farms since ut can go faster and haul more vs the skid steers
Hey Ryan I tell people outside the farming A lot about how farms works I'm not a farmer myself but I grew up with farmers at my school You have to upgrade your equipment to Run a business.
I appreciate you spreading the word!
Why did you end up going ag leader? Simplicity of monitor consolidation?
Bright, simple displays. We’ve stuck with it since 16 because of ease of use.
Just added more things to go wrong with planter. I hated all my upgrades to my planter.
Amen! I just go to the field and plant with my 29 year old planter at 5.5mph and the only thing I have to worry about is a chain or hydraulic hoses. I still grow much better than County average yields without all the headache. In my opinion It's more up to land stewardship and Mother Nature than anything you could ever add to a planter.
@@Kyleyz250frider the jd 7000 corn plantet was the best planter made simple andeasy to run grew 250 bushel corn
@@dennistembreull2718 I have a 7200 but yes I agree. I listened to a planter clinic a few months back and they kept preaching a 7 bushel gain here, 4 bushel gain changing that, 12 bushel gain adding this. What I gathered from the meeting is I'm doing everything wrong and if I add all this stuff to my planter I should be at 350bu corn easy Hahaha I truly believe the big operators in the I states with the tiled and irrigated 1/4 sections just needed something new to spend money on or some reason to blame a bad yield on so that's how these "upgrades" came about
What is the price per unit on these
Just thinking. The planter has a 200+hp tractor on it as is. The SG cab tractors are closing in on 30 to 50+ years.. so thats ruled out.. The 8235R has its hands full at times, from what i can recall of the videos ive seen. The VT isent exactly flying up the hills.. The chiselplow(s) are what,, 12-14ft wide? Theres some time to be saved with 100more hp.. There was a case subsoiling/ripping... So 8530 it is. 8235R goes on the planter. If not, its the 7250R🤣
They could have gone a lot of routes. It likely boils down to what they really need and what kind of deals are out there.
8530 is pushing 345hp and can be tuned to 400hp
how much was the cost ?
Let's just say the overall value of the planter is over $100K
500% the 4960 is the one
Ryan did you get your dream tractor jd 4960
Will the 46 still be able to power the planter? Will you have to add a PTO pump/alternator for the additional power demands?
Travis said a while back about using the 82 for planting
4640 will likely be going to hay but can be a backup if necessary
@@MultiTurbospeed Always good to have a back up
Will have a new tractor or 8235R
So who foots the bill for this since everyone uses it?
Mr. K originally bought the planter.
@@larrybe2900 yeah so what I’m saying is does he pay for the whole upgrades? How does that work? Genuinely curious as I’m in the same situation
@@tebfarms939
My understanding is each operate their own business sharing the tools.
🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
I understand that buying a newer planter is a lot of money, but at this point would it have been worth it to buy a newer 12 row with the big box, and only a few year old planter with almost everything that you have done to your planter
We intend to trade it off in a few years but it’s more budget friendly to work with what we’ve got and spread the cost out over several years instead of buying a newer more expensive planter.
New you would have to depreciate over several years. Maintenance you can take the whole cost in the year performed.
🌞👍
But ...but ...but Mr. Bloomberg says just take a stick and make a hole in the ground. **/sarc**
my money is on JD 4960
Whatever it is, I hope it is not Green. Blue, Red, Orange anything except green. Thanks
It looks like it may be time to buff out that tractor I'm just saying.
👀🙄🐾👍
Yep more computer bs and its still depends on how mother nature if u going to have a good crop or not
Every upgrade we’ve done since 2016 has paid off so we’re going all in.
With perfect weather, soil conditions, and uniform seed size you can pretty much run an old oem 7000 planter and get a good stand. The upgrades pay off big when conditions aren’t perfect but you still need to get a crop in.
Good for you Ryan om the Max Emerge XP./Got to be the 4960 based on your past history here. The 8530 & 9400 are to big for you guys
the cost up grade the planter its a 10 year investment ??? you have no garanti for bigger
harvest its huge lottery ore farming are that good now for any invest ment ?????????
We have a reliable harvest 4 out of 5 years. Nothing is a guarantee in business but I’m sure it’ll be worth it.
Seems to be the norm for all the CZcamsr farmers monkey see monkey do. When one does this everyone does , however it does make a difference,
