  • Hey guys, it’s Whit with NatureHills.com. We’ve talked about the best maple trees for fall color - and they certainly have red handled - but what about the other colors? If you’re looking for a splash of yellow and a tree you’ll never have to worry about replacing from old age, I have to suggest a Ginkgo Tree. Ginkgos have been around for over 200 million years with fossils dating back to the Jurassic period. Talk about a tree with longevity.
We’ve got some great ginkgo options from the species to some classic cultivars. When it comes to choosing which is right for your garden, knowing the basics can be helpful. That’s why I’ve put together a list of the top 5 along with some defining characteristics.
    5. Sky Tower Ginkgo
I’ll start with Sky Tower Ginkgo - which grows slim and tall just as the name suggests. Classic Green, fan-shaped leaves add texture to your landscape for years and years. In fact, this long-lived tree can stick around for generations! During the fall, its leaves put on the classic ginkgo show and turn bright yellow! Use the tree as a backdrop for the family photo or the leaves to take aesthetic fall pictures for your socials. 5. Sky Tower Ginkgo, Growing Zones 5-8, classic green fan-shaped leaves, fits in smaller yards and is a seedless male selection.

    4. Troll Ginkgo
Do you want the visual effect gingkos offer in the fall, but just don’t have the space for a full-size tree? If so I think you’ll love Troll Gingko - it only gets about 2-3 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide! This miniature is perfect for containers or in small backyards and is a male, seedless variety - so none of that smelly fruit to deal with. While the tree is smaller, the fall color certainly isn’t as the lush green leaves will still light up your landscape as the days get cooler. 4. Troll Ginkgo, Growing Zones 3-8, stays small and compact and is an excellent seedless variety.

    3. Princeton Sentry
Of course, some of us are looking for a large tree to make a statement in our yards. That’s when you’t turn to Princeton. Picture this in a backyard or even planted along your street. The leaves have a leathery texture and reliably turn strikingly yellow each fall. These trees adapt well in urban neighborhoods while being a slow and steady grower averaging around 12-14 inches a year. 3. Princeton Sentry Ginkgo, Growing Zones 3-8, Unique Foliage. Is great for shade and a gorgeous yellow fall color.

    2 Autumn Gold Ginkgo
Now, this tree is breathtaking to look at. This iconic tree has leaves that dance in the wind and the color has that bright yellow-gold tone to it. Beautiful, fruitless and drought resistant Autumn Gold might be one of the best choices for a shade tree on sunny days. Ginkgos are often called “living fossils’ because they’re regularly found as fossils by archeologists. Wherever you choose to plant this, it will add beauty to your yard and a golden spark to your fall landscape! 2. Autumn gold, Growing Zones 3-8, one of the most long-lived trees, low-maintenance and glowing yellow fall foliage.

    1 Ginkgo Biloba
Of course, I had to end with the original. It’s tried and true and an all-around winner. It has a lovely fall color that brightens up the yard. It’s ideal in hot and dry climates and tolerates urban air pollution like a champ. Reaching up to 80 feet tall, Ginkgo biloba will be making statements in your landscape for years and years (and then even more years - this tree is VERY long-living)! 1. Ginkgo Biloba, Growing Zones 3-8, Beautiful yellow fall color, full sun, and makes a great shade, street and fall color tree.

How do you find the "original" ginkgo biloba? Everywhere I look, it's basically, which one (cultivar) do you want? Nothing about the "original" which is actually what I would prefer.

Hey @sidney4329, if you're in the contiguous 48, we have the "original" non-cultivar Ginkgo biloba available. Check it out here: www.naturehills.com/ginkgo-biloba-trees Many nurseries will only sell cultivars due to the fact that they can promise the cultivars won't fruit. When planting the ginkgo biloba, you won't know if you've bought a male or a female for 15-20 years when it either starts fruiting (or doesn't). I hope this helps:) - Whit
