We have to always consider how all of this started. We cannot take for granted how new nations unfold after an empire or I should say to empires created no borders or boundaries and now when the empire was crumbling all these different people were trying to formations which is an extremely difficult task. The situation is that any borders being formed after such a long history under Empires will not be perfect and there will be conflict. The Greeks and the Albanian of the villages and the mountains did not have national awareness. The Albanian elite and the Greek elite of Asia minor had a better understanding of that because in those days they were no public library‘s and the villagers and people living in the mountains did not have access to history other than what they heard from their neighbors or family members. Once the nation started forming the national awareness started coming about the problem was that everybody had a claim of some land because the people moved and mingled and mixed. When Greece was formed it was trying to form it’s ancient land because that’s what they had known last prior to Rome taking over and then the Ottomans. No forming a nation while trying to separate from an empire that you’re part of for 400 years is difficult because even identity can get a little blurry. Greeks were becoming Muslim Albanians were becoming Muslim the word Muslim didn’t really get used only the word Turk and since a Turk was Muslim that means a convert was a Turk. These are things that don’t make sense to us today because we have a different idea of nationality and heritage and we have history books and genetics and all these tools to understand better. You do not have to force assimilation but in certain times you didn’t want to speed it up because any new nation or group outside of yours could utilize some of your people and try to take over and annex your land with the reason being that is there a people live there. No one was really wrong no one was really right. The fact is trying to make some thing like this Stick is not easy so assimilation was a big part mainly due to the fear that any Islam converts would sign up with the Ottomans even if they didn’t believe in Islam just so they can get paid and that’s what happened. The Muslim Albanian did take payments from the Ottoman as mercenaries to attack the new Greek state. Orthodox Albanian or is there a better known as Arvanites were the one fighting them. This created a little bit of a problem as far as generalize talk of who’s on who’s side. That was not dropped by the government because it also helped the government keep this issue alive so that the people within the new formed Greek state would not attach themselves to any group outside of it and therefore it would not create a reason for annexation or any type of loss of land. And today however this threat no longer exist other than in the media. We are currently in the transition between the mindset of back then to the modern mindset. The only issue we have to overcome others is the issue of in Sausalito is something that might have been two years ago is that one group is totally innocent and the other one is not. Dont expect Arvanites (at least most of them) to publically declare they they are Albanians (they accept that they speak Albanian though). Unfortunately due to the centuries long Greek propaganda, and due to the latest misfortunes of the Albanian nation (that caused a major part of Albanians to stay secluded from the rest of the world, be one of the poorest countries in Europe, and after the fall of communism to become one of the countries with the highest criminality rate), the idea of the common Albanian to the Greek population became such that Arvanites felt ashamed to admit their origin. Not only them .. this is a common phenomenon for a lot of Albanians that have moved to Greece the last 30 years (see Eleni Foureira etc). Greece as a nation on the other hand is embarrassed to say that a lot (if not a majority) of the high ranking "officers" of the war against the Turks were Albanians (at that time they spoke Albanian most of the time, but they also spoke Greek since they lived here) and most of the villages around Athens, the cradle of their civilization spoke Albanian, and the Greek Idea that the European forces tried to portray after the 1821 war was just a dream... Arvanites during tha time didnt like muslim Albanians who fought for the Turks (fun fact for the Greeks , no real Albanian liked Albanians who fought for the Turks, at least the ones who did it willingly, because a lot of Albanians were forcefully taken to fight for the Othoman army). Religion played a significant role for them as well. At that time even in Albania, orthodox Albanians didnt really have the best relationships with muslim Albanians. Our national hero Skenderbeu fought against muslim Albanians who didnt join him during his rebellion against the Ottoman empire. Anyway, good thing for us Albanians is that most of us know the history of both sides while for the Greeks I cant say the same...
Most Arvanites were bilingual ... they spoke both Greek and Arvanitika so it makes no sense to say that any of them were of Albanian descent because something like this is not true. All Arvanites had a Greek conscience. I know it first hand because my grandmother was Arvanitisa bilingual ... but when you asked her what you are she would tell you I am Greek of course !!! but also i know it from many writings by arvanites (letters memoirs etc etc) who used Greek language when writing. Together with the other Greeks but also with Muslims who could not stand the oppression by the Turks (Islamized Greeks) they made the revolution of 1821. The Greek state was built on the struggles of all of them and we are all proud Greeks who have a Greek education and culture and we declare it publicly and privately even if some of us speak also arvanitika besides Greek . Many ancient Greek cities existed in present-day Albania ... so we do not know if you are a true Albanian or maybe you are of Greek descent.the ancient Greeks had 5000 cities around Mediterranean sea in the time of roman conquest. Αlso there are evidences the ancient Illyrians are Greeks of Doric origin according to various researches. The Dorians are one of the 4 main Greek races that formed the Greek nation. If you are a descendant of the Illyrians (as you say) then you are of Greek origin (It should make you proud to say that you are of Greek origin because Greeks created one of the most brilliant civilizations ever ..you wake up!!!). after all, there are many studies that show the Doric origin of the Albanian language. on the other hand ....we know our history very well and we do not expect you to teach it to us. in addition do not insist on pure races and pure DNA etc etc etc ... because it is absurd and does not make sense....something like that supported and that crazy boy Hitler (who was supported by the Muslim Albanians by the way - the unforgettable Turkalbans by us) and did you see where he ended up?

The point is that Arvanites used to be Albanians at some point during their history..they lived in the area we call today Albania or what we used to call the Principat or Arbanon (hence Arbanon, Arbanites and Arberesh of Italy who have never denied their true historical identity, even though today they are Italians of course). You dont have to make up stories so the other Greeks see you differently, you have fought for that country more than most of "true" Greeks. I say "true" Greeks because just like you mentioned in your comment about Albanian people being mixed with Greeks and other ethnicities, the same goes for the majority of the Greeks who are mixed with Albanians/Illyrians, Romans, Slavs, Turks, Bulgarians, Egyptians etc etc... I guarantee you that if there was a crystall ball where we could see where most of your neighbor's ancestors in Greece were 600 years ago, your Arvanite grand grand parents would have better chances of being located inside the territory of today's Greece. I am sure that if somebody from Germany or Sweden claimed Arvanites as their own you wouldn't have an issue..i guarantee you that. But because of our recent history, religion and economical struggles we as Albanians got a bad reputation so it's a little bit more difficult for you guys to admit your origin. I am a Greek who lives in Germany and know many Albanians. I believe that we Greeks have more in common with Albanians than with our neighbors. We can also face the truth and say: Yes, the Arvanites were Albanians, but Orthodox Albanians and fought with the Greeks for the freedom of Greece. I find it very nice. They fought with the Greeks against the Turks as well as against the Muslim Albanians (Turkalbans). The Arvanites have become part of the Greek people. For me, our common Orthodox religion is more important than national affiliation. An Albanian or Turkish Christian is a thousand times closer to me than a Greek who converts to Islam!

Der Islam war die Ursache für die Konflikte zwischen muslimischen Albanern auf der einen Seite und Christen (Griechen + Arvaniten bzw. orthodoxen Albanern) auf der anderen Seite und der Grund für viele Missverständnisse, die es gab und gibt. Bist du Christ aus Kosovo? Lebst du in Deutschland?
Für mich ist die Religionszugehörigkeit weitaus wichtiger als die Volkszugehörigkeit. Ein Türke, der zum Christentum findet ist mir tausend mal lieber als ein Grieche, der den Islam annimmt.
Die Türken sind ein Vielvölkergemisch aus Griechen, Armeniern, Albanern, Slawen, etc. In einigen Regionen der Türkei, wie in Pontos, leben noch ethnische Griechen, die noch pontisch sprechen. Sie sind ethnische Griechen -den meisten ist es vielleicht bewusst -, aber Moslems und somit unsere Feinde. In diesen Regionen ist der türkische Nationalismus am stärksten. Unsere größten Feinde waren unsere eigenen Leute, die zum Islam übergetreten sind. Die Religion spielte und spielt eine große Rolle. Warum kämpften die christlich-orthodoxen Albaner gegen die muslimischen Albaner? Warum kämpften in Bosnien die Orthodoxen Serben gegen die muslimischen Serben (sog. muslimische Bosniaken)? Warum kämpften die Christen in Libanon gegen die Moslems? Für mich ist ein Grieche, der den Islam annimmt, kein Grieche. Die Religion prägt auch das Wesen der Menschen. Islam und Griechentum sind nicht vereinbar. Ich bin auch der Meinung, dass Islam zu den Albanern nicht passt. Unser Nationalbewusstsein haben wir aufgrund unserer Religion bewahren können. Andernfalls wäre wir alle heute Türken. Dass wir die vielen Fremden auf dem heutigen griechischen Territorium assimilieren konnten verdanken wir unserer Religion und der Kirche. Wir können sehr wohl aus einem Assyrer, Chinesen, oder Georgier einen Griechen machen, wenn er unsere Religion und Kultur angenommen hat. Ali Pascha hat durch seine Handlungen die griechische Revolution indirekt unterstützt, aber sein Hauptziel war nicht nie Befreiung Griechenlands. Ich bin der Meinung, dass Griechen und Albaner die gleiche Abstammung haben.
Es ist erfreulich, dass ca. halbe Million Albaner sich nach 1990 in Griechenland taufen ließen. Darunter auch viele mit muslimischer Herkunft. Es ist auch gut, dass, mit wenigen Ausnahmen, die Albaner keine hartgesottene Moslems sind und viele von ihnen wissen, dass die Religion ihrer Vorfahren das Christentum war. Wegen der Konflikte mit den Serben ist es natürlich schwierig, sich vom Islam zu distanzieren. Ich lese gerade die Bücher "The Albanians: A Modern History", von Miranda Vickers und "Skanderberg: Der neue Alexander auf dem Balkan" von Oliver Jens. Sehr interessant. Jetzt weiß ich auch, warum Skanderberg bei vielen albanischen Moslems nicht beliebt ist. Unter anderem wegen Kruja, als er ihnen nach der Rückeroberung der Stadt nur eine Wahl ließ: entweder zu ihrem christlichen Glauben zurückzukehren, oder das Schwert. Stürzenberger ist mir bekannt und ich schaue oft seine CZcams-Beiträge. Ein sehr gebildeter und Mutiger Mann.

We have to always consider how all of this started. We cannot take for granted how new nations unfold after an empire or I should say to empires created no borders or boundaries and now when the empire was crumbling all these different people were trying to formations which is an extremely difficult task. The situation is that any borders being formed after such a long history under Empires will not be perfect and there will be conflict.
The Greeks and the Albanian of the villages and the mountains did not have national awareness. The Albanian elite and the Greek elite of Asia minor had a better understanding of that because in those days they were no public library‘s and the villagers and people living in the mountains did not have access to history other than what they heard from their neighbors or family members.
Once the nation started forming the national awareness started coming about the problem was that everybody had a claim of some land because the people moved and mingled and mixed. When Greece was formed it was trying to form it’s ancient land because that’s what they had known last prior to Rome taking over and then the Ottomans.
No forming a nation while trying to separate from an empire that you’re part of for 400 years is difficult because even identity can get a little blurry. Greeks were becoming Muslim Albanians were becoming Muslim the word Muslim didn’t really get used only the word Turk and since a Turk was Muslim that means a convert was a Turk. These are things that don’t make sense to us today because we have a different idea of nationality and heritage and we have history books and genetics and all these tools to understand better.
And if you look at places like even Germany or other European and Asian and many many other nations you will see that they assimilated people. Assimilating happens naturally. You do not have to force assimilation but in certain times you didn’t want to speed it up because any new nation or group outside of yours could utilize some of your people and try to take over and annex your land with the reason being that is there a people live there. No one was really wrong no one was really right. The fact is trying to make some thing like this Stick is not easy so assimilation was a big part mainly due to the fear that any Islam converts would sign up with the Ottomans even if they didn’t believe in Islam just so they can get paid and that’s what happened. The Muslim Albanian did take payments from the Ottoman as mercenaries to attack the new Greek state. Orthodox Albanian or is there a better known as Arvanites were the one fighting them. This created a little bit of a problem as far as generalize talk of who’s on who’s side. That was not dropped by the government because it also helped the government keep this issue alive so that the people within the new formed Greek state would not attach themselves to any group outside of it and therefore it would not create a reason for annexation or any type of loss of land. The same thing happen with the new formation of turkey in it byzantine population and that’s where the spear has originated from.
And today however this threat no longer exist other than in the media. We are currently in the transition between the mindset of back then to the modern mindset. The only issue we have to overcome others is the issue of in Sausalito is something that might have been two years ago is that one group is totally innocent and the other one is not. The truth is that a boat groups did things to provoke one another and harmed one another. We should realize that we both come from the same Paleo Balkan group and we have more things in common then not. So let’s take our common background and regroup.

Dont expect Arvanites (at least most of them) to publically declare they they are Albanians (they accept that they speak Albanian though). Unfortunately due to the centuries long Greek propaganda, and due to the latest misfortunes of the Albanian nation (that caused a major part of Albanians to stay secluded from the rest of the world, be one of the poorest countries in Europe, and after the fall of communism to become one of the countries with the highest criminality rate), the idea of the common Albanian to the Greek population became such that Arvanites felt ashamed to admit their origin.

.. this is a common phenomenon for a lot of Albanians that have moved to Greece the last 30 years (see Eleni Foureira etc). Greece as a nation on the other hand is embarrassed to say that a lot (if not a majority) of the high ranking "officers" of the war against the Turks were Albanians (at that time they spoke Albanian most of the time, but they also spoke Greek since they lived here) and most of the villages around Athens, the cradle of their civilization spoke Albanian, and the Greek Idea that the European forces tried to portray after the 1821 war was just a dream...
Arvanites during tha time didnt like muslim Albanians who fought for the Turks (fun fact for the Greeks , no real Albanian liked Albanians who fought for the Turks, at least the ones who did it willingly, because a lot of Albanians were forcefully taken to fight for the Othoman army). Religion played a significant role for them as well. At that time even in Albania, orthodox Albanians didnt really have the best relationships with muslim Albanians. Our national hero Skenderbeu fought against muslim Albanians who didnt join him during his rebellion against the Ottoman empire. Anyway, good thing for us Albanians is that most of us know the history of both sides while for the Greeks I cant say the same...
Most Arvanites were bilingual ... they spoke both Greek and Arvanitika so it makes no sense to say that any of them were of Albanian descent because something like this is not true. All Arvanites had a Greek conscience. I know it first hand because my grandmother was Arvanitisa bilingual ... but when you asked her what you are she would tell you I am Greek of course !!! but also i know it from many writings by arvanites (letters memoirs etc etc) who used Greek language when writing. Together with the other Greeks but also with Muslims who could not stand the oppression by the Turks (Islamized Greeks) they made the revolution of 1821. The Greek state was built on the struggles of all of them and we are all proud Greeks who have a Greek education and culture and we declare it publicly and privately even if some of us speak also arvanitika besides Greek . Many ancient Greek cities existed in present-day Albania ... so we do not know if you are a true Albanian or maybe you are of Greek descent.the ancient Greeks had 5000 cities around Mediterranean sea in the time of roman conquest. Αlso there are evidences the ancient Illyrians are Greeks of Doric origin according to various researches. The Dorians are one of the 4 main Greek races that formed the Greek nation. If you are a descendant of the Illyrians (as you say) then you are of Greek origin (It should make you proud to say that you are of Greek origin because Greeks created one of the most brilliant civilizations ever ..you wake up!!!). after all, there are many studies that show the Doric origin of the Albanian language. on the other hand ....we know our history very well and we do not expect you to teach it to us. in addition do not insist on pure races and pure DNA etc etc etc ... because it is absurd and does not make sense....something like that supported and that crazy boy Hitler (who was supported by the Muslim Albanians by the way - the unforgettable Turkalbans by us) and did you see where he ended up?

I guarantee you that if there was a crystall ball where we could see where most of your neighbor's ancestors in Greece were 600 years ago, your Arvanite grand grand parents would have better chances of being located inside the territory of today's Greece. I am sure that if somebody from Germany or Sweden claimed Arvanites as their own you wouldn't have an issue..i guarantee you that. But because of our recent history, religion and economical struggles we as Albanians got a bad reputation so it's a little bit more difficult for you guys to admit your origin. That's ok...one day, maybe in a couple of generation it won't be so difficult for you guys to admit the truth. Hopefully the perception Greeks have about Albanians will change and you won't feel ashamed of who your grand grandparents were. 😉

There were about 10000 families and they settled among Greeks, so Greeks and the newcomers neighbours became bilingual after communicating, getting married and having the same religion.. they even shared the same churches and villages. they were all 10000 famillies in population. There are books (Sarantos Kargakos: Arvanites Albanians and Greeks and other books..i can write the title if you want) that prove that the Arvanites were of Greek origin from Arvanon…but that is not the point. what you do not answer is that if you are Illyrian then there are researches that prove you are Dorians (Lucas Bellos in his books proves it) there are also studies (Lucas Bellos again and others) that prove that Albanian language has words and structure that show that it is a Doric dialect ... that is, a part of Greek )
You stand on 10,000 medieval families in an area that was culturally and spiritually united that were bilingual because you want to support that the whole Peloponnese is full of Albanians which is a lie…and you know that for 1800 years and maybe more, Albanians and Greeks were part of the same state (Byzantium) and had (and have even today) the same culture. I take out the Islamic period (I do not say Turkish because it was Islamic conquest at first) because in that era a lot of Albanians and Greeks became Muslims and they lost their roots.

I am a Greek who lives in Germany and know many Albanians. I believe that we Greeks have more in common with Albanians than with our neighbors. We can also face the truth and say: Yes, the Arvanites were Albanians, but Orthodox Albanians and fought with the Greeks for the freedom of Greece. I find it very nice. Beide Völker waren auch als Christen für lange Zeit Teil des byzantinischen Reiches , bis die Türken kamen und vielen Völkern in der Region ihre islamische Religion aufgezwungen hatten. Der Islam war die Ursache für die Konflikte zwischen muslimischen Albanern auf der einen Seite und Christen (Griechen + Arvaniten bzw. orthodoxen Albanern) auf der anderen Seite und der Grund für viele Missverständnisse, die es gab und gibt. Bist du Christ aus Kosovo? Lebst du in Deutschland?
Für mich ist die Religionszugehörigkeit weitaus wichtiger als die Volkszugehörigkeit. Ein Türke, der zum Christentum findet ist mir tausend mal lieber als ein Grieche, der den Islam annimmt.
Die Türken sind ein Vielvölkergemisch aus Griechen, Armeniern, Albanern, Slawen, etc. In einigen Regionen der Türkei, wie in Pontos, leben noch ethnische Griechen, die noch pontisch sprechen. Sie sind ethnische Griechen -den meisten ist es vielleicht bewusst -, aber Moslems und somit unsere Feinde. In diesen Regionen ist der türkische Nationalismus am stärksten. Unsere größten Feinde waren unsere eigenen Leute, die zum Islam übergetreten sind. Die Religion spielte und spielt eine große Rolle. Warum kämpften die christlich-orthodoxen Albaner gegen die muslimischen Albaner? Warum kämpften in Bosnien die Orthodoxen Serben gegen die muslimischen Serben (sog. muslimische Bosniaken)? Warum kämpften die Christen in Libanon gegen die Moslems? Für mich ist ein Grieche, der den Islam annimmt, kein Grieche. Die Religion prägt auch das Wesen der Menschen. Islam und Griechentum sind nicht vereinbar. Ich bin auch der Meinung, dass Islam zu den Albanern nicht passt. Unser Nationalbewusstsein haben wir aufgrund unserer Religion bewahren können. Andernfalls wäre wir alle heute Türken. Dass wir die vielen Fremden auf dem heutigen griechischen Territorium assimilieren konnten verdanken wir unserer Religion und der Kirche. Wir können sehr wohl aus einem Assyrer, Chinesen, oder Georgier einen Griechen machen, wenn er unsere Religion und Kultur angenommen hat. Ali Pascha hat durch seine Handlungen die griechische Revolution indirekt unterstützt, aber sein Hauptziel war nicht nie Befreiung Griechenlands. Ich bin der Meinung, dass Griechen und Albaner die gleiche Abstammung haben.
Es ist erfreulich, dass ca. halbe Million Albaner sich nach 1990 in Griechenland taufen ließen. Darunter auch viele mit muslimischer Herkunft. Es ist auch gut, dass, mit wenigen Ausnahmen, die Albaner keine hartgesottene Moslems sind und viele von ihnen wissen, dass die Religion ihrer Vorfahren das Christentum war. Wegen der Konflikte mit den Serben ist es natürlich schwierig, sich vom Islam zu distanzieren. Ich lese gerade die Bücher "The Albanians: A Modern History", von Miranda Vickers und "Skanderberg: Der neue Alexander auf dem Balkan" von Oliver Jens. Sehr interessant. Jetzt weiß ich auch, warum Skanderberg bei vielen albanischen Moslems nicht beliebt ist. Unter anderem wegen Kruja, als er ihnen nach der Rückeroberung der Stadt nur eine Wahl ließ: entweder zu ihrem christlichen Glauben zurückzukehren, oder das Schwert. Stürzenberger ist mir bekannt und ich schaue oft seine CZcams-Beiträge. Ein sehr gebildeter und Mutiger Mann.

In Greece, anyone can become Greek as long as they accept Christianity and speak modern Greek, and there's no recognition of any minority. So that's what you're confusing, ethnicity with nationality.
