  • Gojira's Joe Duplantier reveals that his younger self would have never imagined he'd actually SING on a record, whereas his current self can't imagine doing an album that's all growls. He explains the vocal experimentations he's been doing since 'The Way of All Flesh' and revealed without that expansion he might have quit, though he still does like to scream. He also recounts a story of a fan telling him that people think the band has gone mainstream. October 20, 2016.

    They haven’t gone mainstream. It’s called experimenting. You have songs like “the art of dying”, very brutal, very metal. Than you have “shooting star” off their new album, which is very calming and beautiful, then on the same album you have songs like the cell. That’s why bands like gojira and periphery are the real deal. They don’t give a shit if you like it or not, they make music that they’re happy with. Keep doing what you guy’s are doing. I'm confused by this. Does no one remember that Gojira have actually had clean singing since their first album? There's clean singing in "Clone", "Satan is a Lawyer", "Fire is Everything", "In the Forest", "Blow Me Away You(niverse)" and he even sings a couple words on "Love". That's almost half the songs on the album with clean vocals, I don't see why people complain about Magma having a lot of cleans.

    The whole "becoming mainstream" argument was something I never understood.
    Music is a creative and emotional outlet. People need to experiment and they want to express their feelings through music.
    Your state of mind is constantly changing and the same goes for your taste in music and the influence you get from other musicians. Noone can prevent that.
    Even the listener himself is changing constantly. If you like perticular songs and albums it's probably because they match your current taste and emotions.
    If you don't like the new work of some artist anymore it's probably because either you, or the artist have developed in a different direction.

      Tripperino Kripperino there's this misconception that "selling out" means you play X type of music. Selling out has literally nothing to do with the music, it's the intention behind making the music, that's the only thing that determines whether you're selling out or not. If they went back to death metal and they only did it for fans, that'd be selling out. But the straight death metal fans would deny that because it goes against their personal taste.

    If the song is super aggressive and about pain, trauma, suffering, rage, etc... then screams and growls are going to make it, going to sell it.
    If the song (or passage) is about beauty, enlightenment, joy, euphoria, etc... As clear a tone as possible seems the most useful approach.

    Gojira is an extraordinarily dynamic band, and if they did nothing but straight growls, over time, they'd lose their dynamism. People grow, and bands grow, and fans grow, too. True fans will appreciate changes, even if it's not always their cup of tea - but that's art. When we change, our art changes. Fans are just along for the ride.

    it boils down to creativity and state of mind. it's art. if you keep painting the same fucking picture people aint gonna stay interested for very long. i've been listening to metal for 30 years and when i wanna hear some bands roots i listen to their older material, come to appreciate more of the catalogue in its entirety at that point. i don't expect bands with a longevity to keep writing the same way. there are exceptions of course. everything a person does in life is to move forward. improve, evolve. as a musician you gotta keep going forward by expanding and creating. think as is there was no box

    • @AggressiveTendencies
      @AggressiveTendencies  Před 6 lety +8

      I mean, it's more mainstream than their more death metal-leaning stuff that came prior. It's not like pop pandering or anything, but more mainstream than their previous stuff.

    • @ericjohnson3336
      @ericjohnson3336 Před 6 lety +2

      Matthew Roberts it's not very heavy. The heaviest non main stream album of 2017 would be Brendon small's Become the storm or archspire's relentless mutation

    I think the key is in 2:10 Bands change things up to keep doing things that they feel is interesting and good to them. Doing the same thing over and over for 20+ years is a good way to burn yourself out creatively and musically. Fans need to keep this in mind when they get upset when their favorite band changes their sound up. You don't have to like the "new sound", but you do have to respect it if you call yourself a fan.

    I love Gojira's vocals. It's not just "rarr asawwwffaarr araarraaaghh raajjuggaaaahhAAAAHHH RARRAAARRAA" He's not screaming, he's yelling. "Where Dragons Dwell". Such a powerful song. "IIIIIIII SAAAAAWWWW..........I SAAAWWW MONNSSTEEeerrrrrrrs." The fact that some of their songs are in B Tuning and sound heavier than C Tuning bands really says something. They just all play very well together to create such an atmospheric sound. I can't wait until their next album comes out and really hope I get to see them live. Hopefully Joe takes care of his voice because I've seen too many people lose it over the years.

    I really enjoy clean vocals mixed in with harsh ones but I sympathize with people who are worried/frustrated when it comes to a heavier emphasis on clean vocals. Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth has completely quit using harsh vocals after an artistic change despite being one of the greatest harsh vocalists of all time. I would hate to lose Joe's beautiful melodic screams if sometime in the future the band has another artistic change that completely replaces harsh vocals with clean ones like Opeth did.
