      Mark Lewisohn has a great reason for Polydor calling them "the Beat Brothers". The word "beatle" rhymes with "peedle" which is German slang for a guy's junk. Polydor, in '61, wasn't going to release a record by Tony Sheridan and The Wankers, so........

    my intrest is in the song, as the first commercial recording with the Beatles, and re-released in early 64, I have always found this song a fantastic example of george Harrisons guitar ability, so much so, that he doesn't seem to ever have the same fevered, reckless enthusiam in any future Beatle song, his guitar solos progress to a dizzying hieght, with a reckless abandon like a run away train, raw and pure rock and roll. you can tell he loved to play the heck out of that old folk tune.

    Pete Best sounds steady and solid as a rock, even though Kaempfert took his bass drum away. Hmmm

    • @TheMerseySound1
      @TheMerseySound1 Před rokem +2

      Bert Kaempfert didn’t use bass drums on ANY of his Pop productions, starting as far back as 1958’s ‘Ich Brauch Einen Ring’ by Ted Herold.
      Tony Sheridan didn’t like Pete and his playing style.
      Both he and the band had never worked with Kaempfert before, didn’t know his production methods and there was a language barrier between Sheridan and Kaempfert.
      When Tony saw Kaempfert telling Pete not to use the bass and tom drums, he thought his opinion of Pete’s playing was being validated. Unaware this was something Kaempfert did all the time.
      People often point to this session as evidence of Pete’s alleged bad drumming. Regardless of what anyone thinks of his playing, the bass-less production style of Bert Kaempfert undeniably proves Pete has had a black mark wrongly held against him for over 60 years

      Karl Hinze the sound engineer said the drummer was lousy and they did not like the sound of Pete beating the bass drummer every beat to the bar so they took away his bass drum so he could only play with the snare and hi hat. He also said there is a passage in My Bonnie where everything is a mess.

      For the early Beatles Pete was good. But John, Paul and George were innovators, you know.

      Hi jillzi7!
      It is totally Tony Sheridan on the fabulous guitar solo. He was already an accomplished artist when George and the others came to Hamburg, and truly a key figure in Rock history.
      I've found wonderful commenters on some of these videos who were on the scene then, they lived this, and they offer valuable insight. Lots of articles and interviews with contemporary musicians are out there too...but be careful of Wikipedia and Beatles fan sites, they can be misleading.
      I knew Tony just a little. He sang Bonnie and lots of songs to me, and told me how he recorded with some of the Beatles when they started out. He was a wonderful guy.

    I think your in error, according to the 1974? interview with tony sheridian, used in the documentary "the complete beatles" (BBC) Tony states that the beat boys where a studio band, that the beatles did also play on his record,for about half of the songs, and My Bonnie was sung by himself and the Beatles where the band on that song. you can hear paul and johns cat calling, there voices are distinct. Ain't she sweet was recorded at same session, and that is clealy john singing.

      hi! Tony sings and plays lead guitar on Bonnie, and that's his fabulous solo. The Beat Brothers, I think, is the generic name for the backing group that Polydor could use for its recordings---not always the same musicians. This album was Tony Sheridan with the Beat Brothers. When the Beatles became popular it was reissued, eventually becoming The Beatles with Tony Sheridan. (Business!) It's Tony on all tracks, with varying input from the others, except for two---Ain't She Sweet and Cry For A Shadow. I'm not sure about Nobody's Child, but Tony's other songs were chosen by Kaempfert to target the young German market. This was especially so with the old Scottish tune My Bonnie which they all sang in school. People write all kinds of things, but I'm pretty sure of these facts. Met Tony a long time ago, he was a wonderful guy. Thanks!
