- Around two million British citizens living overseas will be able to vote in next month’s UK general election after a rule change.
Previously, people who left the UK more than 15 years ago lost their right to vote.
But now, British citizens living abroad can register in the last constituency they were signed up in before leaving the UK.
It is estimated that the number of people able to register after the rule change will increase from around 1m, to 3.2m-3.3m.

'Expat' is the term people use when they feel they're too rich or too white to be classed as immigrants
No, Expat is the term for someone who has moved out, Immigrant is the term for someone whos moved in, all of the immigraants in the uk are expats in their own country, aall of the british expats are im migrants in country they now live in, its not some conspiracy, you just don't understand english.
look at the definitions of the words, "immigrant" a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country and "expat" is living somewhere temporarily
@@Ay2xywho do you think you are kidding? They visit their family in the UK at Christmas and then F off back to sunny Spain.
Or back in the real world, a person who has worked their way up to be self sufficient enough to move legally to a host country while assimilating and respecting local culture rather than a chancer who floats over on a boat, begs for free accommodation and then screams about Islamophobia from their council flat.
@@Ay2xynot true expat mean professional and highly skilled this people here are a simple immigrants
They're not expats if they've settled there 😂😂 - they are immigrants in those countries!

Yup but I am a British citizen so?
@HuplesCat so you're still an immigrant you just don't have Spanish citizenship
@@HuplesCat your Kremlin vegetable 😅
@@HuplesCat so am I and I intend to vote.
This makes no sense, if they don’t live here then they shouldn’t have a vote. Why should someone who is living the life of old Riley abroad be telling people who live in Britain who they should be governed by! This is how desperate the servatives are!
Well you might want to move back, usually when they get too old they do.
@@emmajessica46778 Well in that case they can vote when they get back and not sooner.
Then the UK should give me a vote, as an immigrant living in the UK for 15 years.
@@BarbaraDettori I didn’t know you didn’t have a vote! How many years do you have to be here till you do?
*British emigrants
Wouldn't they be Emigrants? Immigrants move in to a nation while Emigrants move out of one, unless I'm misremembering my high school geography.
@@MultiKommandant Thanks for the clarification.
Thanks,got an new word@@MultiKommandant
Incorrect. Those that retain British citizenship and may one day return to the UK are expats. Those that leave with the intention of making a permanent move and taking citizenship of the country they move to are emigrants. Expats is often used for those who are living overseas temporarily, mostly because of their work posting. E.g., to work as a manager in an overseas branch, factory, office of the company.
Shame on them
She dont live in the uk and gets to vote on its politics wtf run aways
That's good, actually
That’s the point really. It makes no sense. To me it makes total sense that it should run out after a few years. So why the hell have they been given back the vote again?
I'm just curious, do you want all the non-British people living in the UK and paying tax in the UK, to have the right to vote?
@@danielwhyatt3278because they’re citizens. Voting in most countries is by citizenship not by residency, if it was by residency then someone who moved to Britain three weeks ago could just walk into the polling station and cast a vote which (regardless of political opinion) would be generally considered to be wrong.
It's really common and has been the case for a long time.
Don't worry I left England 42 years ago and there is no way I am voting in a British election especially since more than half my life I have been living overseas . I left England behind I have no loyalty to them only to where I live now . I have been back but never use my British passport so for me I have no right to vote in an election where I don't know the issues .

You can't really blame them
why are people being allowed to vote in a country which they don't live in anymore?
Because they're British. Voting abroad is a thing in most countries
@@Tcoc11 so what's changed?
they couldn't before but can now.
doesn't make sense to me. they get to vote for how the country should be run but they're not part of that country. frankly it's irrelevant that they are british by birth.
@@aethellstan As the respondent said, it's the case in most countries. They have British passports which in itself means they have a stake in at least foreign policy.
I’ve lived in Spain over 20 years now ,,,,,,don’t think I would want to vote unless it was to rejoin Europe ,even if it is just for trade and freedom of goods across borders
Tories want their votes, as they're seen to be from the well-funded middle class.
If sunak was Pinocchio, imagine how big his nose would be.
Starmer should have a.big nose
Even lied in an advert in the paper snd lefties talk about tories dirty tricks
Bet his nose 👃 is smaller than Bojo’s! Seams to be a Tory manifesto pledge, big noses make good Tory candidates.
Ex pats nonsense. UK economic migrants
Yippee, I can vote! Tories eat dust!!!
Disgraceful - why haven't the true British been given a VOTE on this? They may not have given up allegiances but what happens when there is a grievance over Gibraltar for instance? -Ridiculous! should be revoked immediately!
The Tories introduced this thinking these people would vote for them. I think it's another thing that will backfire. There is nothing about this that is right.
That is disgraceful, they don’t have to live with the consequences
Well, their pension, aka everything they depend on to survive, is in the hands of the UK government
Fk 'em. They don't have a stake here. They've lived abroad for over 15 years. Vote there!!!
@@HDv2b They wouldn't survive if they depended on their state pension. Apart from it being nowhere near enough to live on it's fixed. They don't get the annual rise from the triple lock. I can't see many of them voting, I lived there for a few years and I know what they're like. The UK is not something the people I knew ever talked about. Why would they?
Agreed. A vote is about self-determination and not being nice. They chose to leave...
There are many UK government policies that affect emigrants much more than UK residents, such as Brexit and the ending of freedom of movement, and the increasingly hostile immigration policies that make it impossible for many of us to ever move back to the UK with our non-UK spouses.
funny how they were not allowed to vote on BREXIT lol

If you don’t pay taxes and aren’t using public services then why are you voting? The people who have lived there for over ten years have no claim to any part of the British system. You chose to live in another country long term, make your peace with it.
Why feed poor people who don’t pay tax?
"have no claim to any part of the British system" They might have significant investments in the UK, possibly even businesses. Many will have their employer pensions in the UK, and of course most of them are still entitled to receive their UK State Pension. Also, they are not utilizing the UK health service as they move into their senior years, which can be extremely costly.
I agree if you left your country, why do you need to vote. That’s a residents right not expats
They might have significant investments in the UK, possibly even businesses. Many will have their employer pensions in the UK, and of course most of them are still entitled to receive their UK State Pension. It's also worth noting that they will not be utilizing the UK health service as they move into their senior years, which can be extremely costly for the country.
For Family!
It’s a good thing I can vote again as a person who moved to the United States. I’m pleased with this.
I think it’s good, I don’t see why it’s a big deal
Many Brits in Spain voted for Brexit because they wanted the immigrants out. They were told it would make their status in Spain more difficult as they would no longer be an EU citizen and not entitled to health care etc. Voted Brexit anyway. And when it made their life more difficult... they moaned.
Morons
Proof? Trust me bro
No they didn’t. The law banning expats voting came out in 2002. Brexit was 2016. This law came out in spring! Just another liberal loony making up stories.
My Mum and Dad live in Spain for last 10-15 years and nothing changed for them
Many Brits, not just some, but many. If they were already living in Spain they weren't allowed to vote. One would have to conclude that you just made that up, Sonny Jim.
What's the difference between an expat and immigrant?
Depends on where you are standing and looking from.
I would have thought expat aren't permanent residents abroad. Much like digital nomads whose actual residents are at home and then work remotely abroad
An expatriate, commonly referred to as an expat, is typically defined as a person who lives outside their native country.
An immigrant, on the other hand, is defined as a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.
An immigrant intends to stay indefinitely, while an expat has no clear timeline as to how long their stay will be.
Expat = someone whos haas left for another country, an immigraant is someone who haas arrived from another country. Its pretty easy, ypur an expat in ypur country of origin and an immigrant in your new home.
Expats are pale-skinned Westerners and immigrants are not.
A total of 141 countries grant expatriates the right to vote in elections in their countries of origin.
You not in the country you shouldn't have the right to vote.
I'm French, I pay my tax, I love the UK , I been here over twenty years and this is the only election I'm not allowed to participate.
I won't vote in the French election that Macron triggered because I don't feel I have the right to do so even know I legally can.
I live in UK I'm a British citizen not a French citizen.
🇬🇧
If you want the Right to eat up more EU votes and swing farther, please do vote in your newer country of residence. 🫶
If you are a British citizen then you can vote in UK elections. If you are a French citizen then you vote in French elections. It is citizenship not residence that confers the right to vote in national elections. This is standard is most countries.
I agree it should be about where you contribute. Citizenship should be the balance of Rights and Responsibilities but if feels to me like the latter gets forgotten.
You mean immigrants.....
No
Well no... because we are looking at it from a UK point of view. Meaning they are British expats. British immigrants is the term used by the receiving country, in this case Spain.
@@run2cat4run If you live aboard for more than 15 years, you're no longer an 'expat' but rather a immigrant.

dumb, they made it clear they wanted to live elsewhere why the hell do they get a vote for a country they don't live in. Their families in the UK still get there vote they shouldn't have a say.
Its nicer to say expats instead of emigrants.....
Migrants looking for greener pastures
Why is it nicer? Explain
Surely those who live in the country where the policies affect the local people should vote? Not outsiders living abroad? 🤔
Not expats but emigrants
true unfortunately British are not longer expats but poorer migrants
It's good that the BBC is aware that there are many UK citizens living outside the UK who have the right to vote in this election. However, the BBC chooses to restrict much of its election coverage, making it inaccessible if you are outside the UK. As a public service broadcaster, the BBC should really make its election coverage available to all voters, wherever they live.
Where do British citizens born abroad and who have never lived in the UK vote for lmao
The reason this was changed was likely because the UK government will have an impact on you regardless of how long you've been an expat for.
The reason for the change is to allow wealthy British citizens living abroad to be able to legally contribute to the Tory party.
sunak, starmer, macron, trudeau, biden, zelensky and netanyahu are competing for the clown of the year award. It's going to be a close contest this year.
Based.
Why should they have a vote? They chose to live abroad! What has our way of life got to do with them? Want their cake and eat it!!
At least they are British unlike the thousands of students, etc who are not British but for some reason are allowed to vote even though they are of other nationalities
Common wealth citizens are entitled to vote.Decide in political British affairs.Their coun tries fed and still feeding many British emigrants up to now.

That lady talked about 'teachers right being protected' etc. Sweetheart no rights are protected these days.
I dont see why they should be able to vote.
Anyone should loose that right once youre no longer actually living in that country.
Its plain and simple
It's our right as a British citizen to vote if you're living abroad.
They might have significant investments in the UK, possibly even businesses. It's also worth noting that they will not be utilizing the UK health service as they move into their senior years, which can be extremely costly for the country.
@@OptimisticHominid Excellent comment. I am a French resident and do receive a UK State Pension along with my French pensions. Your point about not using the NHS is a valid point. I pay into the French social security system and have a mandatory (Mutuelle)health insurance.

Feels very wrong. The Right to vote should dervive from the Responsibility to contribute e.g tax, jury service etc
British people should vote in British elections.

Brits love beautiful sunny Spain huh? ☀️ 🌴🇪🇸
Have you seen UK weather?
I’m just about to move out to Spain. I’m with Bill Anderson on this, I don’t feel good about having an influence in a country I have chosen not to live in . Also, I’m mindful of the ex-pat Brexit opinion there was in the referendum !!
If you don’t live in the UK you shouldn’t be allowed to vote on UK politics! Want a vote? LIVE HERE and PARTICIPATE IN SOCIETY!
These people are immigrants to mostly the EU, an institution some and even most of them voted for the UK to leave, not ex-pats. They taken the decision to turn their backs on the UK. Their choice and one that I have not problem with. However, the fact they can influence our democratic system is a bit of a concern. Do they pay anything in say tax toward the UK? If so then fine but if not then they should not be allowed to vote. What was the old clarion cry: No taxation without representation! The opposite obviously.
As citizens of Azerbaijan, we are very worried about the Palestinian civilian population. Please stop the war. Peace is a convenient way for both parties. Hunger and thirst prevail in Palestine. We should help the hungry and thirsty Palestinian people as human beings. 😢😭

why? if u leave n dont pay in why do u get a say? maybe wen we were in the eu get a mep vote but why wen ur not invested n dont have t deal w the consequence?
Actually, we do pay in! Up until recently, British expats were allowed to pay Class 2 NI contributions, to enable us to get a full UK pension. Mind you, the amount is frozen from the date of first payment, in many countries.

A vote for tory is a vote for Labour

This is really messed up. Why the hell has this law change happened? Surely it’s right that you should lose your right to vote in the UK after 15 years. If anything it should be less, so why the hell have these people being given the right to vote again on UK fares when they don’t have to necessarily live with the consequences.😨😰 Thank goodness though this law means they can only vote on the decisions made in the last constituency they were in, rather than necessarily on a national level.
