If you’re making game pieces (like character tokens and similar pieces) what’s the most sustainable way to make them? I would assume making 2d tokens out of recycled cardboard but I don’t know much about this so what would you recommend?

Hey thanks for your comments and questions! The most sustainable options will depend on where you are having the game manufactured. If you are working with a factory in the EU, where cardboard has a higher percentage of recycled fibers (ex. 95% of chipboard is made from recycled fibers in most German factories) than this would be a good option. However factories in China don't have access to as much recycled paper so FSC certified cardboard would be more sustainable. FSC certified wooden pieces or bamboo pieces might also be better options in Chinese manufacturing. It's hard to know until you have the facts of where the raw materials for the game are coming from. Ask your manufacturer how the wood/ paper materials are sourced. Good luck and happy new years!

@@onepipwonder915 ok that makes a lot of sense thank you so much! Do you also have a recommendation on 3d vs 2d tokens or paints? Like is it better to use the most sustainable material you can find based on manufacturing company and make unpainted 3d tokens, painted 2d tokens, or some other combo? Ive been working on designing a board game and I initially was going to go all out on making 3d models with paint but make them out of sustainable materials because I care about making it a sustainable game, but after watching some of your content I’m really rethinking this and I want to do as best I can in this regard

@@BovineTerror That is awesome! I really appreciate your desire to make the best choice. I have recommendations but also personal opinions on this topic so take it with a grain of salt. First: From a sustainability standpoint keep the game pieces minimal. Consider if there are components that are not essential to game play and whether they are needed in the first place. (This design process is hard but really important for sustainability.) Be a real editor of your own work and cut out what is not needed. Minimizing the amount of tokens/components will greatly reduce the negative impacts on the environment. Second: Utilize GREAT ART over 3d or 2d concepts. Consider the trees in Photosynthesis. The pieces would have come out rather boring as 3d unpainted tokens. But since they have wonderful art for each tree species they look fantastic even though they are just chipboard tokens. We have had our copy of Photosynthesis for 6 years and it's played A LOT and the components still look great. The third and last thing I would recommend is to avoid plastic. Just don't use it if you have any doubts about it. There is so much plastic in the world already. That's just my thoughts on the matter but ultimately you are the boss! Best of luck to you and your game and thanks again.
