  • "Africa" by Toto has been covered by countless artists... and for good reason! It's simply a beautiful song - instrumentally, vocally and lyrically. Sure, you can say, "Oh great, yet another "Africa" cover. Well for me, this song never gets old, and I enjoy and respect each and every cover I come across. However, to do this song justice, you really have to listen closely! So much is going on, in what at first listen seems like such a simple track.
"Africa" is a song by American rock band Toto, the tenth and final track on their fourth studio album Toto IV (1982). It was the second single from the album released in Europe in June 1982 and the third in the United States in October 1982 through Columbia Records. The song was written by band members David Paich and Jeff Porcaro, produced by the band, and mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Elliot Scheiner.
Critics praised its composition and gentle production; the song continues to receive critical acclaim, and was listed at 492 on Rolling Stone's 500 greatest songs of all time.
The song was accompanied by a music video, which premiered in 1983, and was directed by Steve Barron, who collaborated previously with the group for "Rosanna". The video features Toto in a library, as they perform and showcase various aspects of African culture.
In 2015, David Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. He based the lyrics on a late night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering. The viewing experience made a lasting impact on Paich: "It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about it if I was there and what I'd do." Jeff Porcaro elaborates further, explaining: "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past."

Great!! Just great!! The background harmonies on this are so complex. Well done and painstaking I'm sure.

Many thanks! I did play and sing all my parts, but to be transparent, I did so along with a backing track to sweeten the mix. I still go through "painstaking" steps to understand and replicate all parts regardless. Thank God for the modern day DAW that enables us hobbyist musicians to produce decent covers in our bedrooms! 🤟

This might be one of your best yet. From the voice of Paich to Kimball, with some Timothy B. Schmitt thrown in-your voice really makes this one work! Seriously and ridiculously impressed. And props to your co-conspirators on this one, who also contributed amazingly authentic work. 🤘

Thanks for the high praise Deyan! I don't really consider myself a vocalist, but rather a guitarist who can carry a tune. I have come to realize it is more about choosing songs best suited to my voice (like this one). Still, I am a glutton for punishment, and will continue to embarrass myself trying to belt out crazy high songs like "Dreams" by Van Halen and what not! 😜
