    Hello Ivanna, that was a great introduction video for anyone considering coming to Norway! I am doing my masters right now and I have already finished my courses so I have a thesis grade which will not affected by the dissertation that I am writing (there is no grade system for dissertation in my counrty, just pass or fail). I am planning to finish it by March-April 2022. I am wondering can I apply with my thesis grade without finishing my dissertation?

    First off, thank you so much for such an informative video. It looks like you keep getting so many comments and questions on it so I just want to say how much I appreciate you for answering a bunch of academic questions from internet strangers!
    Second, my own question: I'm currently planning out my master's degree and there are a couple electives I can take that could help me make a better thesis BUT the professors are notorious for giving out harsh grades, average is a D. Is the thesis grade the most important for PhD admissions? I'm wondering if I should try and take some classes that I know I can get an A in but maybe miss out on some skills that are becoming more important in my field. Thank you again!

    • @IvannasNorskLife
      @IvannasNorskLife  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi. There are two parts: grade for Master Thesis itself is important and should be B or A. But there is also another grade that is average for all courses you have taken (master thesis is not included): here also is B or A. But grade for master thesis is more critical than the average grade from all courses.

    Hi Ivanna, many thanks for your informative video..
    Based on your experience in Norwegian graduate schools, I was curious in knowing how employable my application might be if my academic CV contains a postgraduate degree from a well ranked European university, but the GPA is not more than B.. with only 2 publications (one of them was my master’s thesis published) and only 3 conference proceedings, as all my master’s projects are based on real companies and are also listed.. besides other skills such as (latex writing, statistics, and speaking 5 languages, with IELTS 7.5 and basic Norwegian A1 level).. However, I do work at a higher education institution but not as a teacher.. in fact I still didn't enrol to any graduate school or PhD program and this due to the fact that I am on process of doing my GRE test.

      Hi. Typically it takes about 4-6 months to get a PhD position. Important to know that in Norway July is a vacation season. Most likely you would need to finish your master first because your master thesis grade will be an important factor for the committee. Trying to land an internship could be a good idea, but do not count on it that much.

    On the references in the application, do these people writing letters of recommendation absolutely need to be academic references? I went to industry after my masters and the people best suited to talk about my work performance and ethic are my managers, VP, team members, etc at my company which i work for.
    Also, i read that a lot of PhD positions require a Master’s Thesis as part of the application, but if I understand correctly I can possibly replace this with years of industry experience in an area of research interest instead of publications and Master’s Thesis?

      The best way would to be to contact university with this question. But on a general thought, if she is applying for second master degree then it is not popular in Norway and common rule will lead you to grades from bachelor degree. But with A grade from her master’s she can apply for PhD in Norway.

      @@nguyettoleanh9288 It sounds like you had a nice interview. Your nationality shouldn’t be of concern at all. The choice should be based on you skills, professional characteristics and if future supervisor can work with you (meaning that you have similar perspectives on how work should be organized). Imagine that your supervisor loves to micromanage and check every single task, while you personally work better under less supervision (it would be a hard 3 years for you and your supervisor). Or if you like to be guided a lot, but your supervisor is comfortable with more self driven and independent person. • @IvannasNorskLife
      @IvannasNorskLife  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi. Typically 3 candidates are invited to the interview. If you were called as a first one out of 3 candidates, then waiting time is longer. After interviews with all candidates, if you are considered for the position, university will contact your contact persons. So the waiting time for receiving feedback from your contact persons will affect your waiting time. So it may take from couple of weeks to couple of months.

      @IvannasNorskLife  Před 3 lety

      Hi. You need to fulfill requirements in the PhD position description and be yourself. There is no one rule, each university has both some common requirements (I talk about them in the video) and some specific requirements as well. Then each professor ( who will be then your supervisor) is looking for different characteristics in the person.
