KATE'S 2ND SUDDEN ATTACK OF THE CANINE VESTIBULAR DISEASE

  • Kate has suffered a SUDDEN 2nd reoccurrence of the Canine Vestibular Disease. TO be more precise she has a form of the disease termed "Idiopathic." This means there is NO KNOWN CAUSE the veterinarian can find after a blood panel work up and a physical exam. This is considered a "common" disease in older dogs of 13yrs and older. In an odd way this is good since it rules out thru blood work and physical exams not to be an actual stroke or has anything to do with the malfunctions of the brain. Thus, it is also called by Veterinarians an "old dog disease!" Kate seems to be bouncing back once more but her balance problem will take weeks of rest to recover from just as before. Please refer to my two older videos of her first attack. I will keep you all informed as to her recovery on the road over the next several weeks.
    PLEASE NOTE: That coming videos will be of her BEFORE THIS RECENT 2nd sudden attack.
    My name is Mark and I travel with my two Girls, "Katie & Sara" (a Border Collie and an Irish Setter), as Semi-Nomads in our upgraded 2008 Pleasure-Ways Ascent - 19ft. Campervan. I bought this RV in 2018 and have spent the past 4 yrs. upgrading it for Boondocking & Dry Camping off-grid. We are retired and now enjoy the freedom of the open road exploring and making new friends and discoveries along the way. In our coming journeys we will crisscross the west from the wilds of Canada to the Mexican border and from the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean to the Golden Fields of the Plaine States and the heights of the Rocky Mountains. The girls and I hope you will join us on this journey of discovery and adventure.

I hope to have her still for her 15th year. or longer but that is not within my earthly control. Glad it was helpful! Dogs many times are much more "resilient" than people since for them it is a choice of "life or death!" For people who go thru hard times, it is a choice between fighting back or becoming a "victim" of their own life choices.

    Sorry to keep it clinincal;
    BEFORE you ever noticed the vestibular issues or the first clear episode, did Kate ever display
    1. very brief hind leg weakness? For example, weakness when waking up or when surprised into action
    2. Occasional/rare bed wetting
    3. Did she ever have a moment where it seemed as if she lost all coordination or became utterly weak for a moment
    I so admire your compassion for your dogs. They can’t tell us what they feel and it takes empathetic intelligence to do what is right for them. As far as I can tell you are exemplary in that realm.

      I have been very lucky with Katie. I do not know if it is because of her breed or how fit I have kept her over the 14 yrs. but thru all three attacks of this disease she has after about 5 weeks each time come thru it on her own. She had what I call "cartoon vibrating eyeballs" for a few days after each attack. She had the head tilt, but the third attack straitened that out but left her with a weak rear hind end for getting up and down and walking briskly but she can still trot around the yard next to me. All I can say is keep your dog fit and healthy, not overweight and sluggish. Just like a human, they will do far better in life.

      Have you seen a vet for a blood work up and physical. This is not your typical CVD "that I am familiar with" that comes on quickly with minor balance and physical ailments that usually improve after two weeks IF not by 4 weeks. Keep a close eye on him and report these issues to a vet you know and trust.

    I'm so sorry about what you and Kate are going through. I found a tiny, 5-weeks old blind kitten in the woods. Soon after, she began having spastic neuropathic episodes that are painful and very scary for her. Like Kate, it hits suddenly and without warning. Sometimes she's fine for two to three days, and then in one day she'll have repeat episodes. Hundreds of dollars with an holistic vet, and we are still dealing with it and have no idea what it is beyond some sort of neurological issue. We may never know the cause or a cure, and it could just be something she was born with. She's 6-months old now and the size of a 16-weeks old kitten -- so tiny. Yes, idiopathic is indeed what we, too, are told. I hope Kate snaps out of it. You are supporting her in every way. Prayers and love.

      Katie is just over 14 and has recovered from THREE attacks of this. The first one left her head "cocked" and her hind quarters weak, the 2nd attack "straightened out" her head to normal but made her hind quarters weak and the 3rd attack just left her hind quarters weaker. It took her about 5 weeks to recover fully from each attack, but she is going strong. She does walk but has difficulty going up and down stairs and in and out of the patio sliding glass door into the kitchen. All of a sudden when walking her hind quarters goes out on the rear left side (like a trick knee) she stumbles but corrects and goes on. All I can say is to have patience, lover her and give her time for her to heal herself as mine did. I used a walking body harness to help her in and out of the RV when this happened the last time.
