  • D7 Cat Drew Whisenhunt rebuilt final drive in 2012. Bearings were pulverized and the final drive case was cut open by the gear being cocked to one side and rubbing the case all the way through. Also honed out the track adjuster cylinder and reworked the piston rings in it, as it would not hold the track tension before. My son did this! This is his first dozer he had never worked on one or ran one until this project cam along. This was a major repair for his first time dealing with a dozer, I guess it worked!!

Be a hoot to drive that baby....Cats seem to run and run with a little maintenance, last for year’s. So much power with around 1200 rpm I’m told.

Hey Local, thanks for the heads up on that. I'll tell Drew to "set his purse down" and hit that thing. He's been babyin' it you say? Congrats on keeping your pair crawling! Friends, Cheryl

Thanks for the advice, I adjusted the flywheel brake and now I can easily shift gears. I also cranked it up and worked it harder and it got a hot. Now I need to figure out the thermostat deal.

Cool Beans! Don't know how you did the repairs to the beast by your lonesome. That's my boy!

Sounds as if the flywheel brake isn't working too well. The fiber shoe for that isn't expensive. Heavyquip probably has it. Tell that boy to pull the "Loud Lever" down and let 'er rip. That motor will start slobbering oil out of the stack if it runs slow and cool like this. Make sure that you have two "temperature regulators" (thermostats) in place and that they work at the correct temperature. Nice job on the repair. It is not easy keeping these machines running. I have two of them.

Its probably cold oil has to warm up so so clutch will stop cold oil couples it like a torque converter

Great story! This would be a dream come true for me, especially with some mecahnical problems and all.. Are you making a lot for a house here?

He was in mid 30’s. I think he was going to make a pond that time. But now he does have to make a pad for a house, or cabin I should say.

Strong running old cat. Despite what everyone says these old dozers love to lug. lower rpm is where torque comes from, top end is for hp, and you need torque to push.
