back in the early 40s when diesels were first emerging, there were some companies that crafted "Air whistles" which were designed to mimic a steam whistle to combat the harsh sound of a horn.
The fact that UP could get Big Boy running is something a rail fan would never think would be possible but Union Pacific was able to get Big Boy running is a miracle

I miss the sound of the steam locomotive whistle. I remember as a kid, lying in my bed T night listening to them going through town. Very calming. One of my greatest childhood memories.
Of course the reason they had to use an old steamer for that service was because a diesel would freeze up in those conditions. Nonetheless it was deemed far too important a service to neglect as the factory that was built there was in constant need of resupply...not to mention the annual charter in which the eccentric owner would remind a select few of the magic he hoped to spread on that faithful day on the 25th of December. Rumor has it that the train is still operating that route to this day and has even assisted with their annual delivery tasks as workloads increased
I saw Big Boy #4014 on this tour, at first in Fort Worth, at the rail yard, then in my town of Waxahachie as he made a stop there. On the trip from Fort Worth to Waxahachie, I stood at the FM875 grade crossing and took a video as he rounded the corner. MAJESTIC!!!!
If there is one sound that sends a shiver down my spine and brings a tear to my eye. It is a steam whistle on a steam locomotive in all it's majestic glory pulling a great burden down the track.
I can't wait to see that in Southern California again and I'm hoping to make a trip but I'd love to see it during a weekend it's hard for me to get off work during the week
That's the best quality sound bite I've ever heard of Big Boy's whiste. It's great to see the kids getting such a big thrill out of watching 4014 roll into town.
There is nothing better than the sound and smell of a steam train, you can keep your diesel electric, and electric trains, they are not in the same league as steam.
Once you heard the sound of the steam whistle and the brass bell and the smell of burning coal you'll forever remember what a big steam locomotives presents is like!
Watching this train pass through my town and hearing the whistle was one of the coolest things I ever witnessed.. I felt like I hoped in a Time Machine for just a few minutes those big wheels in motion the eary sound of the horn whistling from a few miles down the track. I know, im a simple man

That is literally an amazing sound. I love train horns, but there's something about that one. Beautiful piece of machinery right there no doubt about it
This sounds menacingly terrifying.... Imagine being in a plane crash as a soldier in enemy territory, and being the only one to survive, and it's at night, in the woods. And you just hear this coming towards you🥶
Compared to modern day diesel engines, steamers have calming whistles
That's what happens when you change to horns.

I beg to differ my argument :the prr banshee whistle

jhjghj
And it's an even bigger miracle that they successfully converted it to oil this time.
I never doubted that the railroad that Designed it could make it run again, it was always about the funding
I counted what it's called but there's like a crazy rail catching video of a steam engine by Union Pacific

The engineer is a real showman. Thrilled that crowd
Just like any musician, you have to be accomplished to get the most out of the instrument you play.
The engineer doesn't know what he's doing because that loco should not be spewing black smoke. Lol
