    New guy here looking to get into ham for the first time ever. I know a little about radio frequencies and propagation from my Navy days, but I'm trying to learn about the radio digital world. Thank you guys for your information, passion, and effort! It helps a lot!

    DMR is actually taking off because the radios, especially the Chinese radios are cheaper (less expensive) than the others. So, just like with the analog Baofeng radios, it is easier for the new broke ham to get into. Especially younger folks who want to get into the hobby but don't have $500 to $2,000 to spend. It also depends on what you are wanting to do with the radios. The back data channel on D-Star can be great for emergency communication work when you can send texts, files, photos, emails and forms via the radio. System Fusion can do some of that to a lesser degree. Analog can do packet and HF digital modes. DMR would be great for tactical nets, voice only. So, look at what you are interested in doing. I actually have all three.

  • @andrewlucas5635
    @andrewlucas5635 Před 4 lety +10

    DMR does not divide the 12.5KHz frequency. That would be FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access). DMR is using TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) by dividing the full 12.5KHz frequency into 30 millisecond chunks, and alternating back and forth between them, giving you two timeslots. DMR repeaters can be configured to reserve 1 timeslot for data use only (Text messaging, GPS, etc) but I have not seen this done on amateur setups yet, only on commercial deployments.
    Also, you cannot use two timeslots in DMR simplex, as there is no repeater to sync two alternating timeslots up. All DMR simplex channels are programmed using timeslot 1.

    Realize this is older, but on the DX question, it's really a matter of goals isn't it. If you want to talk to people in other parts of the world, but you A) don't want to spend HF equipment money, B) you live in an urban environment that won't allow antennas for HF, then repeaters are a tool to let you accomplish what you want. If your and F1 fan, and you want to talk to someone in Bahrain the week of the race, a repeater is a way to do that, and it appears that DMR is a more focused way to achieve that goal.

    I wore my usb cable out programming my first dmr radio. I was watching videos explaining what did what. I would then enter the id's, tg's and zone and move them around then write to radio. I kept doing this over and over until it started making sense. I gave up very early trying to program a local repeater. I made sure i got the deal with my radio ryat included pistar hotspot. I found it much easier to program my radio to hit the hotspot and how to connect to talk groups and change them from my radio.

    Fusion question: in DN mode on gps equipped radios, your position/location data is transmitted unless turned off in the menu. Since it seems like it's sending a pretty specific location, I opt to turn it off. Is there a way to turn on a position ambiguity like in APRS? Or if you have position ambiguity turned on in your APRS settings, does that also apply it for when using DN mode?

    Honest question and asking for an honest answer. Why would someone want to become a HAM operator in 2022? If I think about it, I do already have mobile-phone with fast internet access, can send text, photos, has GPS and what not. I can join voice group chat on Discord or any other voice app over the Internet. I don't need to pay extra to get those features, I don't need special license to use mobile phone and I don't need extensive exam, I can check weather forecast and listen to radio music or see traffic information, most cars connect with phone for navigation. I can see HAM it's more like a hobby, like starting a fire without a matches with a more early adopted techniques. I got excited a bit at the beginning and I was considering even getting a license myself, but somehow when I think about it again, I am not sure I see the extra added value. Is it just for redundancy? Why not just a regular smartphone? That's my question and with all the respect to you guys, show me what I am missing and why it is so cool. Maybe I get interested again and enthusiastic and get radio myself. But another noob question, how much traffic there is, do people talk a lot there, or at least half as much as on Discord? Thanks for honest answers!

I’m in Waco (Robinson) and the closest one I can find is in Killeen, which I can’t hit. Trying to get setup on one of the dstar repeaters in the area but can’t find any info or get ahold of any of the repeater owners to register or even get it receiving. Did everyone around here switch to fusion and the repeater books just not update? I’ll try to hit you up on 3148 or feel free to shoot me a message. KI5MCA

    In a nutshell… DMR, (Yaesu)C4FM, and DSTAR… are todays 3, major flavors of digital radio choices. None will interact w each other directly. Look at it as proprietary. Each will still work and transmit within their own line of radios like analog would; nothing to do with whether internet is available or not. No repeater? No problem. It’ll do simplex just like any analog HT (digital or not).
    Outside of that, REFLECTORS/WiresX/TALKGROUPS are pretty much nothing more than amateur radio version or implementation of Discord or BBS boards (for those who still remember lol). Each as listed above belong to either DSTAR/C4FM/DMR, respectively. Nothing more. You can chose to participate or not. Just allows you a place/room of discussion to chat on a big boy radio as opposed to be typing away behind a keyboard. Lol

    @gsaldana22 Před 4 lety +3

    14:40 Not exactly. Whether you are operating DMR simplex or through a repeater, you are using the full 12.5 kHz bandwidth. What makes DMR have two talk paths at the same time is *timing.* When using simplex, "radio 1" could be transmitting on TS 1, and "radio 2" could be transmitting on TS 2 and they will both hear each other. Why? Because the radios are not set to, or being told to, adhere to timing restrictions. When operating via repeater, the repeater is telling the radios which timeslot to transmit on, and is helping the radios keep their timing. If the subscriber radio is set to slot 1 and keys up, the repeater will say "OK, you want to use timeslot 1? Go ahead, here is the timing. Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock."
    D-STAR is 6.25 kHz bandwidth, C4FM/Fusion is 12.5 kHz.

    This comment is a bit off topic. I am wondering why when I am using my HAM radio I can hear the same people talking on different frequencies. For example if I go on say 444.7525 but then go to something like 447.3545 (Random numbers just for examples) I can here the same conversation going on. Is this a Baofeng programming error or something to do with how people communicate on different repeaters?

    7 Reasons Why DMR SOOKS !!!
    The problem with DMR example, if you use someone else's code plug is they have chosen funny names for each channel which don't give you a CLUE what channel or frequency you are on. Right now, I am on "TAC100Z" WTF does that mean??? No frequency data, no clue of where you even are or what band!
    You have to press MENU / SETTINGS PROGRAM RADIO to see the Frequency INFO or yeah.
    Another thing regarding code plugs in General the backlight was turn off haha, so I couldn't even see what was on the display. For SHTS and GIGGLES reflashed the radio and tried to delete his code plug to see if it would giv but once you put one in, it doesn't want to delete! Once again, the radio is making all the choices and if you disagree, you are SOL!!!

    And the other thing I found this morning was DMR take priority over anything else!! Depends on the code plug and how it was programmed, so beware
    I was talking on a local RPT UHF Analog to be precise when someone on the DMR channel started a QSO as in. It immediately blanked out, me and my Co-Volunteer Medic were saying and wouldn't even let me change channels until the talkers clammed up for a second. Yes, that's right Priority Complex. LOL, Finally I was able to get it off the Local talk group and to this obscure channel and continue my QSO with my MEDIC Friend. So the radio is really designed for NON HAMS who aren't supposed to make choices. The RADIO makes all the choices automatically. The delay is really bad, as if it's muted for like 5 seconds before you can hear the incoming voice transmissions, why? Internet Broadband issues, signal drops, Internet dependent 100%!!! unless you are using a real DMR RPT instead of the Internet.
    DMR is complexed and confusing yes, that's why there's CODEPLUGS meaning Lazy Ham Operators, program it yourself. Learn it, this is HAM not Automated HAM lol. During a Calamity /or an Earthquake or on Field Day / Field Day Contests / Floods / is DMR going to be around? Umm NO all Cell Phone Signals DEAD! Who you going to call now the Ghost Busters ?
    So SLEDGEHAMMER VS Analog DUAL BAND FM rig!
    Many Hams are so thrilled with DMR they are making it the standard and are obsoleting old fashioned FM! If you aren't on DMR, you are left behind with the SPARK GAP! Literally. My First DMR back in 2015 TYTMD398 10 watt UHF 1 time slot :) Before all these other fancy DMR radio's that are coming out. It's still and will always be intended for Commercial USE !!! Not DMR Lazy / Code plug Lazy Programmers. Catch My Gist? There's probably 100 Reasons why to have a Analog than 7 good reasons to have a headache. Numbers !

      You just made me remember. I used DMR in the commercial field. What sucks about it besides it's lousy voice quality, is even in simplex, the radio doesn't immediately key up when you press the PTT. There is a bit of a delay.
