      LOL that's funny that you're arguing about it! Is there any way that this card (step) could hurt your credit? Cause that almost sounds too good to be true that it only has the capability of improving it and they didn’t explicitly say it *can’t* hurt it so maybe. But if it can then it’d be good to know what to avoid. Like is it making large purchases? Spending too frequently? Idk. Cause typically cards have limits but that’s because ur borrowing. With this u aren’t borrowing, its ur money. I mean if we’re getting technical it’s their money but they match what you’re allowed to spend to the amount you’ve deposited into your account currently. So yeah I don’t know much about credit I’m 17 so I’m extra skeptical cause the last thing I want to do it ruin my credit before I’ve even started. But I’ve got my step card and all I just haven’t put money on it or used it.

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  Před 2 lety +7

      That's a very good question and you are smart to ask it! I can't see any way it could hurt your credit because they won't allow you to do anything to hurt yourself. You can't overspend because you can only spend the money that's in there. If you want to get technical, it works a lot like a secured credit card, which is what people with no credit can use to build credit. With a secured credit card, you give the bank some money and that amount becomes your "credit limit" and you can never spend more than that amount. There's really no way to hurt yourself with those. Step is similar but you can't spend more than whatever that day's balance is.

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  Před 2 lety +6

      Oh and in case you are wondering about the "too good to be true" part, Step makes money from fees from the stores every time you use it (generally around 3%) so they aren't doing this out of the goodness of their heart. 😁 But it is a really good deal!

      @@SmartFamilyMoney Oh, so if the amount u put in is your limit does that mean that you should follow the 30% credit utilization rule? Or would it make no difference.. like is the amount that it grows your credit just dependent on the fact that you used the card or is it also dependent on your utilization like with a regular credit card? “Is utilization a factor in building your credit score with the step card?” I think thats what I’m asking lol.
      (Thanks again for your help you’ve been great. I’ve been trying to google it but couldn’t find anything and no reviews of the step card -or their website- even mention it but I feel like that’s a pretty significant factor so I’m surprised it’s not focused on more and so that lead me to question whether it could potentially do damage cause why else would no one talk about it, you know?)

      I actually talk about that in this video! czcams.com/video/9UAdX3G53S4/video.html Short answer is that Step has nicer features but Cash app has more people on it. So if you are exchanging money with a lot of people outside your family, Cash app might be better. Otherwise I think Step is better.

      From a guy who has lost thousands in stocks, don’t do it. You can win, but you can also lose. I found Cash App can invest in stocks but STEP is much more practical.
