  • My Daimler (Jaguar) XJ40 left me stranded again! This is the third time this has happened to me in the two years I've had it. Luckily I was very close to home this time. I do think I have found the issue this time.

    Hi Adam. I’ve been through this. I have a 93 model and my fuel pump relay is in the trunk near to the power antenna motor. Are you sure someone didn’t install the fuel pump relay in the wrong spot? The car should have stalled within 10 seconds after pulling the relay. The pump is easy to change. I can guide you through this but run a test light on the pump circuit first to make sure the ECM is commanding it on reliability. I changed the pump, the regulator, and the injectors only to discover that the problem was actually the ECM connector. A film of oxidation breaks the fuel pump circuit. Reseating the connection solved the problem after spending almost a thousand dollars chasing the problem.

      This is a early car with the battery under the bonnet. So the configuration is different.

    Maybe the pump just has a weak ground connection?
    That can cause voltage drop and the pump might start to draw more amps and just not perform like it should.

    Make sure your battery terminals are very clean and check/clean the electric connectors going to all fuel systems.

    NEVER let the fuel ⛽️ drop below 1/4 full. The pump will suck up all the crap from the tank and wreck the pump / block the fuel filter.

    Could be water in your fuel tank. Especially when your at almost empty. Water being heavier than fuel, it rests upon the bottom of the tank, rusting it out - from the inside. Drain the fuel tank completely, then visually check the fuel. You need to eliminate this as a possible cause of your poorly- running engine. You have got the best Think Tank right here, online.

    Hi, if you are not really sure it’s the fuelpump, I have an other suggestion. I had the same issues a few years ago with an early x300… on holiday with the whole family in Switzerland… i had the famous “Christmastree dash” (lots of lights…)… turned out to be one or more dodgy COILS…. Changed them, fixed!

      @@LivingWithAClassic There is 2 ways to do it: The insane way, by having to disconnect the 2 fuel hoses on top of the diff and praying the fittings won't break or leak and praying the tank will actually want to go out of the car. Or, the sane way, by removing the back seat and parcel shelf and cut an access door. Then, any generic Ford pickup fuel pump and a bit of 8mm fuel hose will do the job for not too much money.

    Yes if you can get a spare ECM and or clean the contacts to test under passenger side under the dash. The pump relay should be cheap to replace. Doubt it is the pump. The fuel filter can give you low pressure if clogged up, but would give fuel code.

  • @jeffball6108
    @jeffball6108 Před 2 lety

    Let me give you a tip. When connecting your fuel pressure test guage and you want to depressurise your fuel system by disconnecting the fuel pump or fuel pump relay, how long does the engine run for? About 1 or 2 seconds max. So 2 possibilities. 1. Just because the relay says 'Fuel pump' doesn't mean it is. Some relays can be interchangeable. If you are positive that its the right location then Id day its been bypassed. Maybe it failed previously and someone bypassed it (the relay). Bottom line is your car simply wont run without the relay, so sitting there waiting for it is... actually rather humourous :)

  • @philthehmk8752
    @philthehmk8752 Před 2 lety

    I'm not familiar with this model Jag - it's too modern for me, but I do know that fuel pump relays on later cars that use them are notorious for playing up and causing various faults. If you ever pull one apart you'll find that there's more than just a relay inside, there's a little electronic circuit too with diodes etc. (well there is on the one's that I've seen). It's certainly worth replacing the fuel pump relay before going for fuel pump replacement. The only strange thing is that normally a car won't run at all with the relay unit removed, but the fact that it does may be just a quirk of that Jag model. Normally on ignition switch on the relay receives a short signal from the ECU to energise the fuel pump for a few seconds to prime the system, then, when the engine is started, pulses from the crank sensor tell the ECU to keep the relay energised for the pump to run continuously. If you're in a crash and the engine stops rotating, obviously the pulses from the crank sensor stop, thus also causing the fuel pump to shut down and stop pumping fuel - it's a safety feature. Whether your particular car operates in the same way I wouldn't know, but I'd guess it would be very similar.

    Would the car run that long with no relay? There's maybe a bad earth causing the pump to power from another circuit?

  • @marekbukovsky1336
    @marekbukovsky1336 Před 2 lety

    Well, it happened to me once in my 94 Daimler, ca 2 years ago. Was very wierd, engine stalled just 500m after car was washed in WAP. I couldnt start the engine, lots of white smoke went out of air intake (so probably was different issue than yours). After i poured some anti-water liquid into the gas tank, engine started after a while as nothing has happened. Cant explain exactly what was the issue, as i cant imagine how water could get into the tank after common wap washing. And it never happened again... So, maybe a hint that water/moisture in the tank could cause engine stall? By the way, car should be towed with rear axle up, right?
