He was going towards the crowd when he dropped it. His options were to pick up speed and risk crashing into the crowd or dropping the bike. I think he made the right choice.

I took a civilian version of the Police Motor Training Course. When the first guy dropped his motor, everyone giggled. Then the second dropped his, then the third! Everyone drops their motor, thats how they train and improve. This officer did a nice job!
Agreed. At the start he told us that he would probably drop the bike. That's how you test your limits.
That's how a pro deals with a situation like that. Just get it up, drops again, you get it up and calmly ride it again. Well done to both the cop and crow!
What’s most impressive is immediately afterwards he continued to push the limits in front of that crowd. After a drop like that most would just play it safe for the rest of the demo just out of nerve. Props.
For reference: Put the kickstand out *before* picking up the bike.

It makes all of us feel confident that real life happens and he gets up, dusts off, makes another mistake, then forgets the kickstand, then gets up a second time....just like life, keep trying and go forward. It doesn't matter how you start it only matters the end result is that you finish successfully and you make the finish line your friend. Good job! Hope for all of us.

True that. Excellent control of the bike and control of emotions. I am sure he’s been there before and done that !
Its also a big heavy bike. The heavier the bike, the harder it is to counter weight, since you have to lean more toward the outside, while controlling the clutch and the throttle. I've done some low speed maneuvers but nothing like this. Same speed but less of a lean angle and wider turn.
He deserved every moment of applause he got. Those things weigh a ton and my hat's off to this guy. The helmet, well, that probably wasn't his choice, but he chose to ride and master that 5th wheel RV, and man did he

Dropped my bike one morning to avoid an accident. Adrenaline kicked in and I picked it up like a boss... hated seeing it on the floor.
Dropping the bike is almost essential when you test your limits.
I always enjoy watching an experienced rider operating a bike with fine handling at slow speed
XypherGhost, he's unlikely to be an idiot if he made Sgt. I'm guessing you've never dropped your bike infront of a large crowd in uniform! I did recently, and then pulled the clutch in when standing it up, meaning it rolled downhill on me. I had to throw it over the other side to control it. We can all make basic errors, like forgetting to put the kickstand down before picking up our bike, when the pressure is on!
Respect for the brave..He is showing other cops how to do tight turns..Eights on a Cruiser Maneuver are very difficult..It you overshoot one side the other side have to be tighter and more dangerous due you have less room now..When circling demo He should have stop the tight turn when losing speed..but heil to the brave..Even the best hunter misses shots...

Very good informative video about braking, leaning and clutchin for slow speed manouvers. Picking up the bike right way is very important, good demonstration on that with that heavy bike and dropping the bike to the other side happens pretty much every time if you're not careful as shown here aswell. Respect!

To be fair, he came off, a soft almost elegant fall, he got up got back on carried on. To laugh, carry on is great. Gravity is a bitch, it will happen, but as long as you aren't doing reckless stuff its all part of the journey!

No, not everybody drops their bike. I'm reminded of this all the time as a relatively new rider. I've been riding for less than 4 years, and I'm currently shopping for my third bike, so I'm always running into guys at demo events who want to give me advice. I meet a lot who "been ridin' all muh life an never dropped one." More often than not, it turns out I've logged as many miles in 3 years as they have in 30. Everybody who REALLY rides has either dropped one, or will. A lot of posers have dropped one, but won't admit it. A few have been careful enough that they never dropped one, but they're the guys who "been ridin' all muh life" and start dragging both feet any time they slow to an idle. They're the guys who consider themselves "experienced riders," yet are sincerely impressed by a display of basic riding skills. I started on a 250, and beat the snot out of it before moving up to a 650. I dropped it quite a few times, but after a year, I feel secure in saying I could ride the hell out of it, slow or fast. Any time somebody tells me they never dropped one, I tend to assume they can't ride worth a shit.
Well spoken. I attended several advanced rider courses. Guys claiming lots of years riding. Their bikes were expen$ive and pristine. They were the worst at slow speed turns, fearing bike drop for good rea$on. I have 2 bikes and one gets used a lot in parking lots and yes, I drop it. I wish I had the super skills not to drop a bike but one has to break a few eggs to make an omelet. I am on the same page as you. I would rather drop a bike trying to ride like a man than duck walk it.
Michael Lovell I’ve been riding for 45 years and dropped my bikes many times especially when I was learning to ride. One time was had a little too much to drink and forgot to put my foot down at a light!!!!!!

There are two types of bikers - the ones that have laid a bike down a time or two, and the one's that have lied and said it's never happened to them.
I laid my Heritage Softail down last year in the garage. I moved it so I could sweep the floor and didn't notice the kickstand go up. Well over she went. Shit happens.

The immediate action when a person riding on the bike gets drop is to lean their fit or hands wherein it is very dangerous. But I really love what he did when he drops, it's very safety.

I wasn't laughing when dropped it...at all!! I played it several times to see where it went wrong. My guess is he was just going a little bit slow for that short turn. But bravo for this demonstration of doing it right with a possible "error". Great job!
Speed wasn’t his issue, it was power. Had lacked power to the rear wheel which would have kept him upright.

It takes guts to push a bike that tightly. Anyone pushing a bike that hard will drop it sooner or later. Those of the faint of heart will never devolop those skills because the cost of getting there is dropping a bike and carrying on no matter what.
Do low speed stuff long enough and you’re going to drop a bike. Watching him spill it on the other side was a bit comical though.

Yes, this is hard on my 450lb Honda, much less a bike twice that size.

This guy is so good at those maneuvers, that he must have just got a little dizzy, coz let's face it, he was going round in Circles like a merry-go-round.
The best of the pros will have dropped the bike, that's why it's got crash bars on it.

I dropped my Ultra some people helped me pick it up, went home watched some videos on how to pick it up by myself on CZcams, good to go now, just remember to turn off engine and put it in gear so it doesn't roll and if you land on the right side put kickstand down first, left side becareful not to push it over the other way. ride smart and good luck.
I dropped my Ninja 650 on a downhill slope on the side of the road leading into a deep ditch, and two of us just barely lifted it. It weighs under 500 lbs, and I can lift it on level ground, but it's not easy. Your Ultra has a fairly low center of gravity, and crash bars that keep it from going all the way over as long as you drop it on a solid surface. On soft ground, the weight of the bike will push your crash bars into the ground. If it goes down to 180 degrees or more, two big weightlifters MIGHT be able to stand it up. The lower the center of gravity, the more leverage works in your favor, but there's a point where that advantage is greatly diminished by the angle. The real world doesn't always work out like the CZcams demonstrations on level pavement. You have to really respect the weight of a bike, and a lot of taller bikes are harder to lift than heavier bikes with lower centers of gravity. Be careful, and hopefully keep everything but rubber off the road.

Lit up on the RPMs and a slow turn no momentum to the wheel gravity will take over but it was a good ride

This is good to know. I'm currently practicing UTurns in my neighborhood and I'm scared half to death doing it. I really need to get crash/highway bars installed on my bike xD. I'm trying to "work my way up" to getting my bike on the highway, but the highway may be the easy part...
And had NO power to rear wheel. This requires real FINESSE with throttle/clutch and when either or out of sinc this happens...so quickly you r down before u have time to recover.
It happens to the best of us hopefully not in front so many people lol.😆

Possibly the first time that he laid it over. When you do eight or twelve hour shifts almost daily with that bike underfoot, you become one with the vehicle. Motor officers always seem to be in control to me.
More than likely that guy has dropped his bike 100s of times. That is the life of a motor cop when they learn and continue to push the limits of the bike and their own skills.

I've done slow speed training. That spill was forgivable. Par for the course. But dropping that bike because you didn't put the kickstand down before lifting it....yikes...UNFORGIVABLE. You know he heard it all week long from his other motor officer buddies...LOL
He's a skilled rider, when he dropped the bike... Should have made it part of the demo.

I read some online stats that revealed biker cops (rookie and senior ranking) can only hear noises 60 dB and up and not lower, say at 45 dB to 55 dB. Though, they have super vision!
Being exposed daily at close range to noises at over 100 dB can damage hearing over time, I read that somewhere. Hmmmmm.
I guess if I were a BLACK LEATHER CLADDED biker cop, that would be the same for me.
Hell dude is good, yes he dropped it but to get back on in front of the crowd of people and ride it out is 👌👌 great. I remember when I use to party my as* off and ride under the influence on my 48 pan-shovel jockey shift I forgot to put my feet down at a red light and all of the sudden the world was going sideways on me, there was traffic behind me and I was with a well known MC so I was in my cut, oh the laughs I was getting and the shame I felt I just had a prospect pick my bike up and I acted like I was checking something. LoL

Too slow and looked down. I think he braked while in that turn as well. Don’t touch that front brake at low speed. Rear only. This is hard it's not like a scooter where you can recover with leg strength. This heavy hog will crush yuh leg if you try, sometimes you just gotta drop.

Forgetting to setup the kickstand was a low level mistake. I guess he's a bit nervous in front of the crowd. Also, getting on the bike from the right side was not a good habit.
Motorcycle getting on the bike from the Right side is the proper way to mount and dismount the bike. Getting on and off from the left is a glaring indication of a non-professional rider.
Yes he should have deployed the kickstand before picking it up....but it looks (from the vid) that he has a habit of leaning it against him during the pick up. Not such a good idea.
But overall this was a great demo for the riders in attendance. Dropping the bike is just a normal course of business.

You are correct. Cops have been trained to get on the bike from the right side for decades. One of the reasons doing this is to avoid the traffic.
Aww screw you guys talking about left and ride side.. i been riding years every day no 4 wheels.. i get on either side i feel like getting on..whats really the big deal now with it being a bad habit?
I started with sport bikes and was trained to always mount from the left to avoid kissing the pipes. Now i am riding a HD Road King and realized that moto cops have been trained to mount from the right for decades to avoid standing in the traffic. But I am still used to the left. Sometimes, i let my passenger get on the bike first, then i mount from the right. It is easier.

What benefits of this kind of bike for police actually? I think police should use other than cruiser.
2 bennifits that Ive learned from a friend who is a Police Motorcycle rider. First is that Harley actually builds a cruiser that is equipped to handle all of the power needs (for electronics) that the police cruisers need. The bikes are big enough to be able to carry and store all the computers and other gadgets that they need to do their job. Secondly is that the Harley Davidson cruisers along with most other cruisers have a low seating position which means that the majority of the police force can actually touch the ground. The police here have been trying out the Suzuki V-Strom and Honda Africa Twin bikes and their issues are how tall the bikes are and trying to get all their gear on the bike.
