- We got an inside look at how new United States Marine Corps officers are trained at The Basic School, a seven-month program that challenges newly commissioned second lieutenants physically, academically, and tactically.
Chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days inside The Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, where he observed five different companies in various stages of training. While Marine Corps officers lead enlisted Marines in combat, in some trainings at The Basic School, they play the roles of enlisted Marines.
These lessons are intended to help them develop hands-on experience performing the tasks that they'll be commanding their subordinates to perform.The Basic School culminates with a crucible known as The War, where students are divided into opposing forces and must strategically battle to seize and defend a city.
Service members from countries like Greece, the Bahamas, and the Netherlands also attend The Basic School.

I attended TBS from June through November 1968 and arrived in Vietnam in December 1968 to serve a year as an infantry platoon commander. Hard year. I lost too many good Marines killed and wounded.
I can verify that the training new officers get at TBS today is much better than it was in 1968.
We didn't have nearly as much gear to train with: just a simple uniform, 782 gear from WW II or Korea, a small haversack with an E-Tool, and a military compass. We trained with the M-14 rifle but I was issued and M-16 in Vietnam which I had never used or disassembled before. Unfortunately, my NCOs had to show me how to disassemble it.
There was no combat town in 1968 as you see now in the Video. I noticed in the 1970's vintage video there was a combat town, but the only thing we had in 1968 was a mock up of a small Vietnamese village used only for familiarization and not for training.
The physical fitness tests in 1968 were more difficult. In 1968 it was called the Physical Readiness Test (PRT) (similar to the current Combat Readiness Test only with more events) which consisted of pullups, pushups, sit-ups, squat thrusts, fireman's carry, 100 year low crawl, and finally a 3 mile run. However this was all done in full combat equipment including rifle and two full canteens. In the summer it was brutal, especially the 3 mile run over hills with full combat equipment as the final PRT event. The M-14 was fairly heavy and awkward to carry while running. After I returned from Vietnam, I was a platoon instructor for two OCS classes and then later was assigned to TBS as an instructor for 3 years. By then the Marines had adopted the new Physical Fitness Test (PFT) which was different than the PFT in the video in that it included pullups, pushups, sit-ups, and 3 mile run in tee-shirt, shorts, and running shoes which was a heck of a lot easier than the PRT.
In 1968, the physical fitness during TBS prepared me well for the mental and physical challenges in Vietnam, but virtually all of the training was conventional tactics which did not prepare us well for Vietnam. During my year in Vietnam I think we only had about five company size operations, one battalion size operation, and one regimental size operations. The rest was all platoon and squad patrols in a wide variety of terrains: mountains, coastal pines, rice paddies, jungle, and in dense elephant grass were visibility was no more than 10 feet in any direction.
One thing that made Vietnam more difficult than TBS was that my platoon only had one and sometimes two radios. Towards the end of my tour there, my platoon had 3 and sometimes 4 radios. At one point we were issued "squad radios" that fit on the side of the helmet for squad leaders and my platoon guide had one, but they were worthless because you couldn't hear anything during a firefight and they were not on my platoon radio frequency which was dedicated to communicating with the company commander 24/7. Almost all of my commands to my squad leaders were with hand and arm signals in open areas, with a runner in more restricted terrain, and praying that my squad leaders knew what to do on their own in the elephant grass and jungle.
I ended up serving 21 years in the Marine Corps commanding 5 platoons, 2 rifle companies, an H&S company, and served as a battalion S-4, and a Brigade G-4 Logistic Operations Officer. Later, I spent 2 years in Latin America supporting counter-insurgency operations with the host country's Army and Navy. My final tour was with US Special Operations Command where I spent most of my time again in Latin America. It was on Hell of a ride. I'd do it all again if I could, but at 77 I'm afraid I'm now permanently retired.
Glad to see officer training today is so much better than in 1968.

I could tell you how it was in the 'Old Corps' circa summer of 1967 at TBS. You know in the last century. But this video reminded me of the passing decades and a brief event I experienced. While our company of 'brown bars' was moving from one classroom to another event we passed by the outdoor garden/patio area outside what I remember was the club at O'Bannon Hall. A group of Marine veterans were gathered there and stood up and applauded us. They were Marine vets of 1917 wishing the best of the 'new Corps' of Lts preparing for their warfighting in Vietnam. 50 years separated our service. Now I see a 50+ year difference and stand up as well and applauded their dedication to become and lead Marines. OooRah!

I especially liked the part where they showed the foreign military partners who train with them, such as the Greek special forces soldier. Did you know that the US and Greece have a long history of military cooperation, dating back to the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s? The US was one of the first countries to recognize Greece as a sovereign nation, and supported its struggle against the Ottoman Empire.
Today, the US and Greece conduct joint exercises and operations in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, strengthening their strategic partnership and mutual defense. I think it’s awesome that the Marines get to learn from and work with their allies from different countries and cultures. Keep up the good work, and thank you for sharing this video with us!

@@epl803 The point of the camp stool is that it’s treated as a metaphor for your rifle. If you can’t maintain accountability of the camp stool, you can’t maintain accountability of a rifle. Everything at OCS has a purpose, obvious or not.

Graduated TBS in 2018. Although I think this video misses in some aspects, it does a pretty decent job of highlighting the experience. Undoubtably some of the best leadership training I ever had the privilege of receiving in my life.
Graduated from TBS in 2018 and became an arty officer. Currently about to start medical school and hopefully become a doctor for special ops units. Forever grateful for the foundation and basis as a human being that being a Marine Corps officer taught me.

TBS is essential for thorough officer development in the USMC. I hit OCS at a time when the Corps desperately needed pilots so I was ordered directly from OCS graduation to flight school. I was elated at the time but years later upon reflection I realized that not completing TBS lowered my overall value to the Corps however fine a pilot I turned out to be. (Served minimum time on active duty to be followed by years in the reserves as a "weekend warrior." Have unending admiration for our USMC infantry and artillery units that we served from the air on multiple occasions.)

Funny to see guys that I went through TBS with as staff in this video. Capt. Phan was one of my roommates
Delta 6, “Succeed or Die” ! Grateful to have gotten to train with the Marine Officers in this video, during the war clip. I know they were only on sight for a couple days so obviously ALOT of what’s done is missed out on, nonetheless, a good production.
Should mention that those PFT “standards are the absolute bare minimum”. Getting a minimum in them all will result in failure. Additionally, without scoring 250/300 you are at risk of not being able to begin training. 280-285 score is more of the average at TBS.
These young Americans make me proud. And I'd like to thank them and their families for their service.

Because TBS is not suppose to teach them how to become Marines. They learn the discipline and basics of becoming a Marine at their commissioning source whether it is OCS, NROTC, or USNA.
TBS teaches the basics on how to become an Officer. Once they graduate from here they will head to their respective MOS school depending on what branch (specialization) they get assigned.
I’m an Army Officer, but the process of training new Officers is similar from branch to branch with some nuances.
They are not just “students”. They are officers. Most of the firearms instructors are enlisted.

As a 37 year old man ive lived in tough cities and Ive never needed anyone for safety but i admit, I feel safe knowing we have these warriors protecting the United States of America. I feel proud being a citizen of the United States of America because of these brave Marines.

Im currently thinking about joining the army or the air force within the next month or so. Most of my family either is serving, served or is currently in law enforcement. I come from a small town and ive only ever worked odd jobs, im in my mid 20’s. If im honest i just feel my life hasnt progressed much since high school and i want alot more for myself. I see the military has been in a recruiting crisis the past couple of years, and ive done my research on the negatives about it. Call me crazy but i still think its worth it FOR ME, that part is the most important part if youd ever seen one. Plan is, get in for a 4 year get out and head to a trade school (Ive never had enough money to ever go) then come back to my home state and spend “hopefully” the rest of my life in peace with my rather large family lol. These next couple years are going to have ups and downs just as everything goes, but i have faith that in the end ill be changed for sure. For the better or worse? We’ll just have to wait. Love the content business insider! These videos have been very informative, insightful and helped me get over the fear of joining. God bless our troops! i

The military is what you make of it. It's also great for kickstarting your life in a different direction. You will definitely change, but you can choose to make those good or bad changes usually. Even if you chose not to use any of the benefits, you would still have made connections with people from all over the country that could help with getting a good job or whatever else.

Much respect to these young Marine leaders and their dedicated instructors. They will be on the sharp tip of the spear, protecting our freedom. As a former Army Officer, I’ve always been impressed by Marine Officer Basic. The Army should institute a similar program for all new officers, instead of allowing each branch to conduct their own training.
Retired CWO3, Went thru TBS in 1982. Had one the worst snow storms in a long time and no one could enter or leave the area for about 3 days due to snow. One group of LT's got stuck out in the field

New Marine officers today earn about $3000 a month. As a 2nd Lt platoon commander in Vietnam in 1968-69 I earned $450 a month with $50 combat pay--but I had to pay federal income tax on it. I don't remember if here was a grace period for filing while in combat. Enlisted were exempt from income taxes while in combat..
In Vietnam, we weren't paid by check or cash but rather with a restricted amount of Military Payment Certificates (MPC) which was like Monopoly Money only you could buy things like razor blades, writing paper, pens, and other simple things whenever we were able to return to the battalion cantonment which was located in the middle of nowhere surrounded by a dirt berm and razor wire.
In my experience, my platoon was only able to get back to the battalion once every 1-2 months for 3 days of rest and hot meals and then it was back out for another 1-2 months.
No such thing as bottled water back then. We filled canteens with whatever water source we could find and doubled the number of water purification tablets recommended to kill as many critters as possible. A lot of times there wasn't enough water to waste on shaving or brushing teeth. It didn't take long for uniforms to begin to rot off. No one wore underwear (skivvies) or socks because they were just something else to get wet and hard to dry out. The boots were uncomfortable at first, but the feet hardened up and it was fine.
Resupply helicopters were sometimes unreliable due to terrain, weather, or enemy threats and so one C-Ration had to last 2-3 days. Why only one? Because water and ammo was far more important than food.
There was so much preservatives in the C-Rations that we used to joke that if we got killed the morgue wouldn't have to embalm us.
There were very few opportunities to bathe on operations and so body odor became somewhat overwhelming, but you got used to it.
It was brutally hot in the dry season and it never stopped raining during the monsoons. I don't remember waking up one morning and thinking what a nice day. There were no nice days.

After long time watch army video. My both sons if they are interested in Indian Army,Airforce, Navy other related defence field jobs. I am first. They must be fully prepared before joining. Not the police field. I salute to Indian Army.

I dont know if they are now teaching the "C-Clamp" for better rifle handling which translates to improved shooting proficiency, marksmanship, and quicker transitions between targets, but I did see many of the students using the C-Clamp when rifle shooting which is awesome imo
