I'm digging lowkey Rachel. Not everything has to be wine glasses and dramatic makeup. People have different sides and that's perfectly okay.
same! it feels like im just sitting with one of my friends or family members just chilling and talking. feels very cool
💯
@Leonidas Leonardo Why on earth would you do that. That is such a massive breach of privacy. You seriously need to take that down wherever you have that posted.
i feel like i notice you apologizing at the beginning of a lot of your videos and you never have to apologize to us. your hair is always lovely bc theres no such thing as a bad hair day, if your not feeling like being on camera, we’re always happy to see kyra, if you’re feeling down we can meet you where you’re at. this is your channel and you never have to apologize to us
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I wanna see all the books you have....a bookshelf tour sounds like a dream
yesss!!!
1000%
I asked her to do that (on Instagram) a few months ago and she said that once she’s really settled and has everything organized she’s gonna do it!!
I don’t mind the laid back set up at all! It feels more personal and has its own charm :)
Also, don’t feel guilty for needing to take a bit of time for yourself, your mental health is important. Take care of yourself
3:16 we watch you because we like YOU Rachel! We don't have the same expectations for you that you have for yourself. You could upload a video about a topic, rambling whilst wearing a plastic bag and I'd still like it because of your personality and because I'm interested in the topic!
But I completely understand where you're coming from, I have the same problem with art. I used to draw fanart to upload on social media and even though nobody expected anything of me, that pressure to bring out content still always lingered in my head (even though I was the one who created that pressure!). It's good to talk about things you struggle with!
It would be cool if you did a monthly reading of your favourite poems. Like a haul video but for poems.
Yess I would love this!
I think your content is enjoyable regardless of your “setup” because I’m here for your thoughts and personality, nothing else. Its okay to experience burn-out or need time for yourself but the only one holding you to this astronomical standard is you! We are always our own worst critics. Just know you’re doing great! No need to apologize
Thank you ❤️
Rachel, this is probably my first comment on any youtube video ever. But I needed to say that this video made me cry. I can feel your emotions while you’re speaking through the screen. The way you talk about poetry, I can feel how special it is to you, so much that you don’t find the right words. I’m currently trying to work on my own poetry book and I just hope someone will talk about my work the way you talk about poetry.
You’re special and wonderful and you’ll get through everything with time.
and please don’t pressure yourself to make perfect videos - I believe we, the people watching, love you, every side of you.
It's awesome that you're writing a poetry book! I'm sure one day people will talk about you in the same way ❤️
Bisera Gjurovska thank you!!
Hazardous Rin thank you so much!
this was very relaxing to watch after a long day while painting
If your looking for some good low-key lesbian poetry then I would really recommend "the air year" by Caroline Bird. She uses surrealist imagery to create these beautiful mini commentaries on various stages of relationships
We are all in the same boat,
We don't even get a vote,
We could write a poem,
Provide something to show 'em,
And end on a happy note.
I've never randomly stumbled across poetry in a youtube comment section but now I wish this was a common occurrence. I love this, It's really cute!
Usually I don't like making comments like this, because I'm unsure how they come across...
But this time I'm gonna say it: You look very good today, Rachel!
A solitary Seagull,
In a field,
by itself,
Alone.
Seagulls gliding across
The sunset
Above the serene ocean waves
Crashing in joy
Among the seemingly brilliant sky
And only a golden lining
Remained
Around the family
Of the singing
Seagulls.
this gives serious rupi kaur vibes
@@ishanafondekar6334, I wrote that spontaneously when I was fifteen, I was sitting in a field alone and seen a single seagull standing in the middle of this massive field.
@@Rick_Cleland OMG that's such a poetic setting... keep writing but my only criticism is the capitals, rupi kaur wouldn't use those
@@ishanafondekar6334 ☹️☹️☹️
rachel i appreciate all the work you do so much, please don’t stress out too much! i’ve been following you for a while and it hurts to see you struggle bc i look up to you so much, your mental health always comes first! a chill video like this is great, a research heavy video is great, i watch your videos because i love how intelligent, well spoken and fun you are. sending u love xx
That was such a relaxing and charming video. Love hearing people talk about things they love!
I love it when you pause a video to mention a good poem by contrast to a poem you're critiquing in a way to show how the same concept can be done in a good way. So, it's great to see a whole video dedicated to good poems! I often find it hard to read because I honestly get bored or can't pay attention long enough, so reading short form items like poetry seems ideal for me. The recommendations are definitely appreciated 💛
The way you talk, you sound so passionate. I absolutely love it.
so grateful to have found your account, along with all of your recommendations :’)
Emily Dickinson is good. Not very cheery, but I've always enjoyed her a lot.
What you said about loving doing something, but when you're expected to do it it becomes a hassle, I get that. I feel that way about reading. I absolutely love to read, always have, but the second someone tells me I have to read a book or article or whatever, I don't want to. It made it hard in school, because I'd never want to read whatever books we had to for class.
My advice is relax, take your time, and don't let anyone make you feel pressured. It'll make it easier to do what you want to do.
I read it as *isnt* good and I was like how dare you, blasphemy
I haven't read in a while because my love for it has been somewhat destroyed but I may just have to read some of em
Rachel! I love your content! You do great. Honestly I would watch ANY video of you reading your favorite poems and talking about why
I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but thank you SO much for this poetry videos, we need more people like you to create such educational and entertaining content about this topic!💛
I love these recommendations! Thank you Rachel. Also makeup or no, formality or none, being authentically you is why I come to watch :)
Such a helpful video Rachel , thank you! You made my past intrest in poetry (until last year quite forgotten) resurface . Have a great start of the week!
Also, I began to read a poem book titled Dog Songs by Mary Oliver, I think you and kyra will enjoy
this video came at just the right time for me. finding your channel has made me remember how much I loved poetry as a child and I'm so excited to pick up some of your recommendations ❤ (also this setup was very calming and the last two poems you read brought tears to my eyes) thank you.
I can't get enough of your poetry videos Rachel, thank you for everything :)
Listening to you speak about poetry is so rejuvenating! Your love of it is so contagious. I could feel your nostalgia when you spoke about Yorkshire humor. I think that I'm going to give reading poetry a try, and I'll start with some of the artists whom you mentioned in this video. Thanks for brightening up my day a little. I hope you're well! :)
Rachel: Is there any good poetry left?
Me: Doggolescence
I totally understand the thing about pressure from others and pressure from yourself, even about things that you usually enjoy. I'm a teacher and with the new pandemic-format of online classes, sometimes I feel absolutely exhausted. I want to do a good job, but shit's really hard right now. Definitely take time for you to get in a better head space, and don't take our comments too seriously. We're gonna wait for you to be ok. (although don't worry too much about doing a 'perfect' video! You're enough).
Really loved this video! Thank you for giving me so many lovely recommendations! Lowkey can be beautiful
Thanks for making this video-- it's exactly the introduction I was looking for!
this video was so pleasent to watch. :)) and take all the time you need for filming your videos, rachel, we love you!!!
Really fantastic recommendations here. I've been meaning to pick up a copy of the Poetry Pharmacy and the sequel for a while now, so they've just moved to the top of my list. Definitely a few others that are going on my wishlist now as well. Thanks very much for sharing.
This is something I really needed right now. Just someone talking about some of their favorite poems.
I'm trying to get into reading and understanding poetry. But I find myself more interested in watching you talk about poetry and analyzing what they mean. I love how you critique by providing examples of better poems and I will definitely try and check these recommendations out!
Absolutely loved this video! You have such good taste in poetry. I love the Poetry Pharmacy books, as well as some of the poets you mentioned such as Wilde, Duffy and Armitage. Haven't read Kate Bass before, but I've added The Pasta Maker to my TBR list, as it sounds really interesting! I hope you're feeling better, and that you're taking time for yourself and your wellbeing
Thank you so much for sharing your recommendations!
I thank you for all of your poetry videos and am sorry if you feel pressure to do them. You've got me into poetry and it's really freeing to write and read it, thanks especially for the recommendations for Armitage and Duffy.
I loved this. I’m subscribed almost exclusively for your poetry content. Please don’t feel pressured. Post the things you love; those are the things we want to see. ❤️
Hello Rachel! Have you read Lana Del Rey’s Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass?
I loved this video so much. All of your poetry videos inspire me to make my own, even though it's just personal and for my therapy. This video, in particular, was nice to listen to before bed to relax, so thank you for that.
I hope that slowly you'll be able to recover, I know how hard feelings like those can be. Just know that we love you and we'll wait for you. Take however long you need.
Yay! I'm always a fan of poetry recommendations!
Loved this as always. I also have trouble being in my own head a lot and sort of put off trying to actually interact with the world and realize the ideas I have in my head into reality. And I definitely get that whole thing where you love something but when you're expected to do it, it feels odd and uncomfortable and like there's suddenly a constraint on you for it and so you feel you have to do it instead of wanting to do it. Also on a side note, please don't apologize for being ranty or rambly. That's why we're all here, to hear what you're thinking, your opinions even when it might seem longwinded to you ❤️
Rachel, my TBR list is already gargantuan and this wonderful video just added to it. I’m always down for a good book recommendation! Plus, you have a really sweet demeanor in this video! You always have a sweet demeanor, but it’s more noticeable in this particular video and you have no idea how much I appreciate that. ^_^
Rachel I love you !!!!!!❤️ I hope u feel better
I am so happy I found your channel I have been watching many of your videos and I love how you give your opinion without being rude (this is refreshing) Thank You
It's called perfectionism. Where good enough becomes as close to perfect as to be indistinguishable from it.
I recommend just do it, enjoy it and say that is enough in itself.
Have you ever tried writing a bad poem? Oh the irony of trying to write something ’bad enough'. How exactly does one write a perfectly bad poem? I just get a headache thinking about it.
Omg the moment people expect me to do things, I can't do it. Like it's so much pressure!! I totally get you. Love this laid back video 💞
Thank you for this amazing video. I know exactly how you feel about the dichotomy of fun and stress.
you will absolutely love the troutmark book shop in cardiff. its an aladin's cave of books. you'll find lovely little poetery books or any other type of books you're after
I love you so much. A friend and I have been on a mission to find good modern poetry. (Rupi Kate, Amanda Lovelace, and Atticus have left us a little dissatisfied) it’s like you read my mind and gave me a list of poetry. Thank you always. ❤️❤️❤️
Hey that bit at the beginning I completely understand. I feel like that about a lot of creative things and writing. Pressure is the death of creativity, and if you’ve got so many people expecting you to provide content I can’t even image how stressful that is. It can be really hard to put that feeling out of your mind long enough to actually create something, in my experience. Perfectionism is hell.
Love you dude keep at it !!
I feel the pressure to do something you love right. Stay with me here, there's a moral to the story. I love playing videogames, I'm pretty good online, and with speed runs of single player games. But when someone is watching me play, I mess up constantly. It's like having people around divides my concentration because I don't wanna embarrass myself by messing up, even if it's a game I've mastered.
Yes exactly. And the more you care about something the more it matters to do it right.
Thank you for being so honest in this video. I found The Poetry Pharmacy one of the most interesting of the bunch. I will put it in my wishlist. :) Thanks for the great recommendations!
Don’t let pressure get to you Rachel you’re doing good just keep in stride and do what you know you need to do for yourself.
Don't be so hard on yourself queen ❤️ you are excellent making your videos, it shows all your effort. Keep going girl ❤️
Nice I’m going to read some of these
I have recently subscribed to your channel, I'm sure it was recommended because of the massive amounts of skeptic/atheist videos that I consume. I often listen to CZcams videos as background stimulus and find your voice pleasing and relaxing. I do listen to your content and I will often go back to glean the details that I glossed over on my initial listen. I haven't really read any poetry in years but you have peaked my interest again. I was a big fan of the Beat poets and read a lot of works from that era. I also really liked Anne Sexton and found her biography to be one of the best that I have ever read. Keep up the great work and I promise to read some of your recommendations
Fancy by John Keats has been my favorite poem since I discovered it at 15 years old. Usually my favorites in things change and evolve as I grow and evolve, but Fancy has struck such a chord within my soul that I don't know if it will ever stop being my favorite, and I don't mind at all.
This was so nice 😊❤
I am loving everything about this. I've been wanting to find new poetry and everyone just says Rupi Kaur and Amanda Lovelace. I will definitely check out your recommendations
Hi Rachel. Would you get anything with Amazon Canada links? The anthologies look really good, I'd love to get them over the next few weeks.
Haven't started the video yet, but so long as we are talking about modern poets, I love Theresa Davis!!!
I didnt know "Lydia the Tattooed Lady" was a poem. I know it basically only from the Muppets. That and the "Going to Morrow" bits were always my favorite.
I also like this set up. I think it's personal and it really works for this video.
I'm also really loving all of the recommendations. In general you inspire me to read poetry , but for the life of me I just can't figure out how to actually read it. Like do I sit down and ponder on a poem for hours or do I just move on? Do I write an essay on each poem? I know there was a video on this but I'm still confused. I think I'll just listen to your videos for now.
I hope you feel better soon and please take your time. No pressure.
I get what you are saying pressure. Please remember to be kind to yourself.
seamus heaney new selected poems is probably one of my favourite collections
haha i was actually drawing just now and suddenly thought 'has rachel talked about any good poetry? because she's certainly talked about bad, but id like to hear about her favourites' and BAM you just posted one :)
What is your opinion on poetry in another languages? I feel like it's completely impossible to read peotry properly if it isn't in the original language. I have been wanting to recommend you some authors but since I think you can't read Spanish it would be hard for you to appreciate it as it is
Rachel the first thing I want to say is that you look gorgeous even without your makeup. The second thing is that you have inspired me so much to explore myself and my inner demons through poetry. Please never give up what makes you you and please don’t apologize for being yourself and feeling emotions
As someone currently in their b. A. degree in comparative literature, I obviously love reading, but having to read books until specific deadlines can really be a struggle sometimes, so 100% understand the pressure situation
You got a shoutout in SmokeyGlow’s Gabbie Hannah video today due to how great your critique of her was. I feel like this is the perfect time to upload this positive poetry video!
Or bad timing, based on what you talk about in the beginning of this video... hope you’re feeling better soon and push through the mentalblock
Hey random question but what day of the month do you upload your fresh poets society podcast episodes? I’ve been loving your poetry dissections.
This is lovely.
Hello Rachel.
I have literally just come across your channel today, really enjoyed your content the one thing i will say before i go on is please stop apologising you have nothing to apologise for as far as i can tell ? ! ? ! We have a few of the same poetry books, we also share the same points of view on a lot of the poetry, so i will be tuning in to your channel when you post new content and i'm looking forward to it. Also it's good you are in the UK because most poetry and literary channels seem to be in the USA it's not a bad thing but it's nice there are people in the same place as i am, so take care Rachel.
Take it easy on yourself, you deserve rest and to be able to upload low-key videos if you feel like you can't tackle the big stuff!
Edit: also love the video!
"Is there any good poetry left?"
And then came Inauguration Day 2021.
I am in the process of publishing one. I will send you when it is ready.
I'm actually writing a collection of meta poetry and I'm really excited about it ^^ I'm wondering if there's any way I'd be able to convince her to review it when I get it published. I currently have only 8 poems for the collection, most of which I'm planning to either rewrite or revise one or two more times, and I have 4 more drafts/concepts so far. ^^
Relaxed. Ok. I'll get some coffee. 😃
I love your natural look.
You put into words something that I've been feeling lately, I can't write anymore because I know so many people is waiting on me to do it... the worse.
I read the principals of neural science, too!
I took the class at my uni
If you're interested, here are some contemporary poetry books I would recommend you checking out:
Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude by Ross Gay (it's exactly what it sounds like. Very good for taking a moment to get grounded in the little joys of life)
Radiant Companion by Matt Hart (I went to one of his readings when this book came out and it changed my life. He's a little experimental with language and image, but still accessible. Hes not as out there as like John Ashbery or someone)
I can't not recommend also Robert Bly's poems. Read his poems Stealing Sugar From the Castle, Winter Poem, and Snowbanks North of the House. The latter two are definitely more melancholy, but not maudlin. They're very much like self-examinations on the fear of intimacy (Winter Poem) and things that go unfinished that shouldn't be (Snowbanks). Stealing Sugar is just a joyful and touching poem.
Brenna Twohy is a very strong contemporary poet. She really has a way with words and imagery. She has a book or two out I believe, and has performed some of her poetry live as well.
With your hair pulled back like that and no makeup, you really remind me of Rooney Mara !
Well, I have a few thoughts about this video:
1-relax. I personally love your videos, and haven’t thought any of them have been lacking. And it’s important to take time off if you don’t feel right to make them. We’ll be here whenever you’re ready, and we’re here for you until then.
2-I’ve never been super into poetry. I’ve always liked it alright, but never really went looking for it, or paying a great deal of attention to it. Your poetry videos, however, have me rethinking that. I’ll probably start going after some poetry now, and it’s all your fault, so thank you!
3-I’ve recently started watching the seasons of the current Doctor (from Doctor Who), which I’m absolutely loving, by the way, and when I saw that they (both the companions, and the Doctor herself, or at least the actress) are from Yorkshire, I remembered you, especially because of their accents. And it got me thinking, do you watch and like Doctor Who, and if so, what do you think of the Yorkshire Doctor? Just curious.
I'm really happy there is no Rupi Kaur bs. First time watching your vids ❤️. You are so beautiful.
Haha you might like my video on her poetry 😛 thank you!
You should post some of your poetry. I bet it's like SO GOOD. Like better than all the other poetry that you critique.
Your always beautiful rachel you have gotten me interested in so much your content is always good enough sorry your going through a difficult time your content has always been very comforting to me love you rachel thank you for being real and authentic thank you for being you
I remember hearing Phenomenal Woman as a song. I remember it was in a children's cartoon. Maybe Sesame Street or Pinwheel. I can't find it online though. Maybe it's the Mandela Effect. I might have remembered it being recited, and I added a simple melody to it. Something that sounds like one of the songs from Carol King and Maurice Sendak's "Chicken Soup With Rice."
My fave modern poets are Buddy Wakefield, Olivia Gatwood, Rhiannon McGavin, and Savannah Brown, all of which have books out!! They also all have youtube channels where they read some of their poetry if you don't have the money to buy the books or if you prefer listening to spoken word :))
Yes! The quality content I need!!!!! The go to youtuber
I could listen to her talking for ages 🥰
I think you'd enjoy Forgotten Women: A Tribute in Poetry edited by Ginny Lowe Connors
Rachel have you ever heard of A.E. Houseman's "A Shropshire Lad" and Rabindranath Tagore's prose-poetry? If you haven't I highly recommend you go check them out coz they're genuinely fantastic!
More of mine:
Red Cottage Days
Simple -
The country town store, its smoke-smelling wood,
And my father buying groceries there,
Then putting them in the car, driving through wood,
The stillness embracing cool morning air,
Crisscrossing beams under some sort of spell,
Shadows concentrated in a trance-like stare,
The path with a pebble-crunching tale to tell,
Building up our anticipation, excitement,
The red cottage hedge glittering a smile,
And tall oak too, to the effect it's been a while...
Sometimes we would have a barbecue soon,
Then some hours later go fishing,
Once twilight had shed its cocoon,
And the lake had ceased its restless wishing,
Our boat slicing through quietness, rocks and stone
In the water slowly disappearing
Into meditation, all becoming more intensely alone.
We would often ride the car to town
Once the night forgot itself in fireflies -
Ride to the auction house filled with smoke and beer.
He liked antique furniture. Our relationship was clear.
It was simple, direct, honest, and deep.
My strivings were unborn, his half-asleep.
He still had hopes for his dreams at forty five.
My thoughts were no busy bees yet, I had no hive.
Simple words and silences fluttered about us,
And no thoughts, no beliefs as yet divided us.
Rain
Rain scurried, and I followed her to the bank.
Rain had a marvelous, flowing raven tress,
A beautiful Asian woman who wore blue jeans,
Her large brown eyes mazes of expressiveness,
Somewhat frantic, desperate, a little sad.
I followed her to the bank, but once I got there,
The place but harbored still and humid air;
An uncomfortable silence was all I had.
Orange and green and blue chairs gave me a stare...
I caught sight of Rain passing the large bank glass,
And I hurried outside; somehow I thought
There was an exotic restaurant she sought,
And once an Indonesian one came into view,
I knew I would enter the restaurant too.
Yet once again, when I entered, confusion
Had conspired to make silence an intrusion...
Apparently, Rain had communed with air
Who had given her wings; she flew elsewhere.
Sometime later I brushed with her again.
Though we didn't speak, something told me
She was off toward the train station
To acquire tourist information.
I wanted her, I wanted her by my side,
Yet whenever I entered, I saw her outside,
Seeming more beautiful, just out of reach,
Her raven tress lifted, a sigh of summer air,
Every nonchalant lift adding to my care...
I awoke to a charming morning stare...
It was about 11 o'clock, and a spring bird
Playfully chirped, delivered a piercing sound
As if to say I had been mad, absurd.
I could smell the grass, the freshness of grass;
I could hear a drizzle that only silence weaves,
Or rather, a drizzle, like a master pianist,
That plays upon a keyboard of leaves.
What a silly boy I had been to let care
Conjure up restless imaginings,
When a Rain, a sweet Rain, was already there...
When my girlfriend Rebecca knocked on my door, I carried a heavy head
Of drunkenness. Rebecca bought
Groceries, she cooked, we then went to bed
And made love, the unfurling heavenly gleam
Laughing at my imagined want, my dream...
you are the second youtuber I watch who is back home ... ^.^
As much as I love your videos, I just can’t do the poetry anymore. Love you but got to find something interesting today to keep my attention. Love you though. Don’t stop being awesome.
