    When I was the piccolo player stationed with the Band of The Commander In Chief, Atlantic Fleet, we played this march on Bastille Day (July 14) at the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic NATO Forces Headquarters. This was before De Gaulle pulled out of NATO, in 1966. We also made a recording of it as part of the World of Marches series of AFRN fifteen minutes broadcasts .I kept copies of those recordings for a long time, but lost them when I lost my house in 2012. This, and French National Defile are two of my favorite marches.

    Joyeux Lorrains, chantons sans frein
    Le refrain plein d'entrain
    De Jeanne bergère immortelle
    Du pays de Moselle
    A tous, les échos des grands bois
    Que nos voix à la fois
    Chantent l'antique ritournelle
    Qu'on chantait autrefois
    Refrain:
    Jeanne d'Arc, vierge souveraine !
    Vieux gaulois à tête ronde
    Nous bravons tout à la ronde
    Et là-bas l'orage gronde
    C'est nous qui gardons l'accès
    Du sol Français !

      My comment 2 years ago shows English words that match the melody. I had set the English words below the melody notes; when I found the French words i set them below the notes, but couldn't tell just where the syllables should go. I've asked several French people in New Orleans, but the only thing they remembered was around "ses sabots"

    In the 1940's in a song book this melody had words to Joan of Arc: Joan of sweet Lorraine her little feet in wooden shoes, gentle shepherdess among her flock of lambs and ewes, cast aside her frock of wool and clad herself in armor bright, oh,oh,oh, clad in armor bright; and thus arrayed all undismayed went forth to fight for her king.....

      Love the verses. My father bought a record of this March before he married, before he went over seas, before I was born in 1943. When he was in Casa Blanca he heard it again and loved it along with the early morning revelle call. I found the records when I was about 9 or 10th years old. Another of my favorites of which I can't spell the name also occurred in James Carney film , What Price Glory. The men are returning from a rigour fight muddy,limping,downcast. As they are sighted the French Commander gives the signal to the band, the band I believe salutes with a ruffle and flourish and begin the March. Carney throws of his rifle ,pulls him self to his 5.7 feet and the men do the same as they come marching back into village. A proud site to behold. VIVE LA FRANCE, VIVE LA FRANCE

    Comme le disait James Bond "Never say never".

    Looking at the lyrics of the original song, this is a hymn to Jeanne d'Arc.
    I thought Jeanne was from near Orléans, but I learned for the first time that she was actually born in the village of Domremy, Duchy of Lorraine, on the Moselle River on the German border.

      +Russian Imperialist I've charted my family to Conde' Noir, Normandy, French Huguenots, c. 1625ish; while I don't hold to any nationality, I think our united histories are important to remember... when I was born c. late 1940's, my maternal grandfather declared over me before I was 1 yr old, "Cannon Fodder" and that has followed me the rest of my life...

    • @davidcadman4468
      @davidcadman4468 Před 8 lety +2

      Russian Imperialist
      I'm in Canada, born in East London, but in reality, genetically, I'm East to the Urals, North to the Nordic States, South to the Mediterranean and West to the Atlantic Wall (Irish), which is why I say, I don't hold to any nationality... Nationalism has had it's day...

    • @67thCloneSquadron
      @67thCloneSquadron Před 8 lety

      Interesting, I am very much French and proud of that my great grandmother is directly of Norman decent but I have some bourbonais as well.

    • @davidcadman4468
      @davidcadman4468 Před 8 lety +1

      Well, as I have experienced nationalism directly applied to the end of my nose, via another person's fist, I have a slightly different view point :D but that doesn't mean you are wrong... each his/her own view point... One thing I learned in the 60's was that people are the results of their time and culture... that was solidified for me when I had to do a paper in the mid 70's on generational change for a family that was transitioning between rural Canada, to a city, and the varying effects on the individuals... The parents couldn't cope/deal with the changes in the children... Societal Change inflicts (and I use that word intentionally) huge stresses on families and individuals... That is so self evident in the current times, almost everywhere in the world... I have hope, but I can tell you now, that some in my circle call me stupid or not a realist... but if we don't have hope of something better, then we have nothing... Human's have gone through massive change before, both climate and technological which affected their societies, and yet we are still here... so I prefer to have hope that something good will come out at the end, even if it does seem to be that we are in a meat grinder...
