  • A Christmas song for people who hate Christmas songs.
As usual, this piece is about a sort of transformation, so the music gradually blossoms into something quite different from what it started as. Please LISTEN UNTIL THE END to find out: why is Carol of the Bells being quoted? Will the speaker(s) in the lyrics ever overcome their seasonal depression? Will we finish in D minor, D major, or BOTH?
Commissioned and performed by Chor Leoni in this version for low voices (TTBB). Please contact the composer (website below) if you'd like a version for SATB and/or SSAA.
Music (and most of the words) by Nicholas Ryan Kelly. www.nicholasryankelly.com

Wow, this was fantastic. Is it only for TTBB? So haunting... I also loved your harmonic choices.

Thank you so much! Right now, it's only TTBB, but I'm hoping to do a consortium to arrange it for SATB over the summer, so the choirs could premiere the SATB version before XMas 2024.

Igazán énekelhető, és különleges hangulatot fest.. Köszönet érte a szerzőnek és az énekkarnak.

honestly, i enjoyed this quite alot. a very pleasant ever needed secular piece that isn't tied down by the overplayed blech that is most Christmas music. however, that gosh dang carol of the bells quote. its the antithesis of the whole piece. a song about veering away from the traditional light and holiday vibes which then multiple times quotes a carol. i want to like this in its entirety so bad but the song itself is completely hypocritical and trashes its own argument almost immediately. that's just my opinion though and i am a bit of a stickler. other than that though, a lovely ttbb piece. we can never have to many mens choir pieces.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment! That's kind of the point of the piece, though. I don't want to be super-literal and say the carol represents the alienation a lot of us feel around the holidays, but... framing and context are important, and I sort of thought of the carol as the "villain" of this piece when I was writing it, if that makes any sense. Figuring out how to overcome it--or at least make peace with it--is what ended up driving the entire form, in a way that seemed very much in line with the piece's message. Whether it works is another question entirely... sorry it didn't for you, but I appreciate you listening!
