- This romansa represents the story in a dialogue between a woman and her treacherousb husband who returns at nights from his lover. While putting her son to sleep she is revealing her sorrow to him and tells about the deeds of his father. Nani Nani sometimes starts also with the text: durmete mi alma, durmete mi vista [sleep my soul, sleep my life] and often has a refrain muevo amor, muevo dolor (new love, new pain). Its origin is an old romance of Hispanic Christian origin.
This lullaby has melodic parallels in Turkish and Greek cultures and carries melismatic, non-metric, musical characteristics. A related melody refers also to another romansa which deals with a queen who finds her lost sister (Hermana reina y cuativa): two sisters who were captive during the Reconquista, brought together again, one as a Moorish queen and the other as a Christian slave. When they both gave birth on the same day, the queen recognized her sister by the lullaby she sang and by her birthmark.

It still surprises me how many people don't understand that there are very few countries, if any, in which the national language or languages are the only languages spoken.
This is quite beautiful, and I do understand much of it, because my native language is Spanish (Puerto Rican dialect)

The Sephardic Jews in Bulgaria came from the Iberian Peninsula. They've been expelled from Spain in 15-th Century and they've found their new home in Bulgaria. We are saying "Nani-nani" to our babies when they are going to sleep!
Many of those Jews came also to Sarajevo.
in Romania, we also say nani- nani! althouGH here lived mostly ashkenazy hebrews

@baklavaciyan yes it is not a Turkish song I'm aware of it but this song is sung among Sephardi Jews all over the world including and especially Turkey... You probably know that in your country they say Ninni Ninni but sephardis say Nani Nani :)

Absolutely beautiful. And sorrowful. The melody sounds very familiar from Armenian music (specifically, in context of the Genocide). ("Nani" is also used in Armenian.)

Does anyone know what instrument that is she's singing along with? It sounds a lot like a clarinet but the smoothness of the transition in the notes and a more Middle Eastern/Moorish musical scale suggests that either the player is very talented or it's not a clarinet. Anyone care to weigh in?

@hit004541 In Hungarian we use our names in reverse order at first is the family name and then the first name, Hadass or mainly Hadas is a known family name and Pal with accent like Pál is the first name as Paul... But probably I was wrong :)

The fact that you can understand this song perfectly being a native speaker of a language from the Iberian Peninsula is surprising. I speak Spanish and Leonese.
It shouldn't be too surprising. Sephardic Jewish people lived in the Iberian peninsula, including Spain, in the middle ages. They were in Spain until they were kicked out by the Catholic King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella...so the language used here (some call it Ladino) is based on the Spanish spoken at that time. It is a very interesting history and I only know a bit of it yet...but not many people know this.
I did know the origin of the language but I still find it remarkable. Imagine that you're shown a song in a long forgotten variety of your language from the other side of the world that still retains traits in a way that seems weird to you but you still understand everything. The fact that this is so known in many countries of the world yet it's unkown here blows my mind.

in south america, today many are finding out their Jewish Sefardic roots. I do not know my real last name prior to Spain. It was changes to hide or escape the Inquisition.
