    It's hard information to find, even on the old interwebs, but the 260 did indeed have a different imbalance than 289s.
    From the January/February 2008 Fairlaner (Fairlane club of America) magazine article titled Small Block V8 balancing:
    62 to 63 221 had a 23.1 imbalance.
    62 to 63 260 had a 24.5 imbalance.
    64 260 had a 26.2 imbalance.
    63 to 68 289 had a 28.2 imbalance.
    So while you can run the 28.2 imbalance damper on a '64 260, it won't run quite as smooth as it will with the matched 26.2 damper. Best to get the Damper Dudes to rebuild the original damper. Everyone likes a balanced engine.

      @@AutoRestoMod is it possible to get an intermittent vibration from a bad harmonic balancer? I have an intermittent vibration that is coming from the engine. I camt isolate it to any specific running conditions. While driving down the road and the vibration starts I can throw trans in neutral. Let off the throttle. Rpm's slow, so does the vibration. Rev engine up vibration speefs up. Put trans back in gear. And drive. The vibration comes and goes randomly. It doesn't coincide with acceleration, braking, cruising or, idling. Ive replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor. No change in the issue. Ive wondered if the egr could cause this issue but I dont know if its possible. And it seems to be ok. The vacuum lines all seem to be good. The carb functions well and has been recently adjusted properly. When the vibration isnt present the engine runs perfectly. I wanted to ask something being that this is about dampers.
    When you have a engine built and its balanced to lets say 50oz and lets say 5 years down the road your damper goes bad, can you swap it for a new one even though the new one wasn't balanced with that engine? I'm assuming you can or they wouldn't sell dampers, i mean Ive done it many times and the engine ran beautifully with zero vibrations but i was just wondering how that works? I'm guessing if when the engine is built if the builder messed with the damper or the flexplate then one would be screwed cause the crank and whatever piece was altered are now married together.
    Ive always wondered about that, I'm guessing its just like replacing a driveshaft? a lot of folks say "be careful,mark your driveshaft before you work on your car!!" well... what if i wanna get a super duper million dollar carbon fiber driveshaft, then what??? i have no reference point since that driveshaft would be new, thank you for your input, i like asking weird questions from time to time.

    Hey guys, I have another question about my 63 Galaxie... again :) Can a bad harmonic balancer cause vibration/harmonics while driving? I have a weird vibration between 40 and 60 MPH that I have been chasing for a while. I have had the tires balanced by 3 different shops because I thought it HAD to be the tires. Now I am convinced it is in the drive train somewhere. The engine is a bit old and the harmonic balancer is certainly questionable. A new harmonic balancer is only 100 bucks-ish but if it wouldn't cause this problem, I could put that 100 bucks towards something else. What do you think? Thanks again for the advice and the great content!!! Love your show!!!

    • @fwh79FOXR6
      @fwh79FOXR6 Před 6 lety +2

      Frank Rizzo: Nice name there jerky! =) Uncle Freddy died??? As for your question, it could be a driveshaft out of balance. I think you can take the driveshaft to a driveline shop and get the balance of the shaft and the u-joints checked out. Or a belt in one of the tires... which sounds odd, but it happens. If tires are the problem you can diagnose front tire problems as a vibration felt in the steering wheel and rear tire problems as a vibration felt in the seat. Doing a tire rotation will help you further diagnose this too. If you swap the fronts to the rears and the vibration moves, you are on the right path. Hope that helps you out brother.

      @@rob69270 I had a vibration in the drive line when accelerating hard in my Mustang. I changed the gear oil in the rear axle and that almost completely eliminated the vibration. I was not expecting that to happen. I think my problem is being caused by the lowering springs I installed. The lower ride height changes the pinion angle of the rear axle, which can cause a vibration. Cars are strange... sometimes when you finally solve a problem, you can't believe what the actually cause of it was.

    Hey Guys,
    Please HELP! I just had a new remanufactured engine installed at no small price and I'm worried the mechanic damaged the harmonic balancer or something else on install. I'm just getting started on mechanics and maybe this guy thinks he can give me the run around, I don't know but I can't seem to get a straight answer. Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't spend my grocery money on this engine. In any case the vibration in the engine is WORSE now than when there was an old engine and an old harmonic balancer. Also I can see that crankshaft pulley has a wobble even though the harmonic balancer is BRAND NEW! My questions: Did he damage/bend something, what could be damaged, should I get it fixed, could this damage the crankshaft? If you can help I'll be forever grateful. Thanks!
