      DUDEEEEE
So this thing with "only dark art -and other stuff for that matter- is meaningful" has been bugging me for some time now.
I personally don't think only dark stuff is meaningful, even if it's displayed in many acclaimed works.
I believe that showing the bright side through art, (and trying to be a good person) and having a reason for this is much more meaningful than only showing the dark side of things.
And after all, sad and dark stuff is all around us, and I'm personally fed up with this, maybe its just me.
So keep making playful/"childish" art, if that makes you happy. Who knows, if you show it publicly, you might also make someone smile.

    • @rubybuttons668
      @rubybuttons668 Před 3 lety +61

I don’t think it’s so much about drawing popular people that is the issue but more to do with copying from a highly photoshopped or stylised image can make it difficult to capture skin textures, tones and colour accurately and all the little ‘imperfections,’ that can make a human face more interesting and unique. That is something you should be learning to do when you are just starting out and helps train your brain to be more observant.
I also find that many of the young people I teach tend to draw popular things because it gets them more praise and acclaim from their peers or on social media, which isn’t always the best reason to start drawing, people who do that tend to give up quickly the first time they receive criticism.
Other than that I see no issue with celeb photos, I use them all the time in my classes, they are handy for grid drawings and help students get a sense of facial proportions and tone drawings. Draw what you love but do it for your own reasons and don’t be afraid to get out your comfort zone.

I think what people think is "cheating" is that digital art can really streamline the sketching process where traditional mediums take longer and more effort to work a sketch. It's much quicker and simpler to shift and rework sections in digital. I think people who don't know better subconsciously link art and suffering, so when something appears easy or care free it's deemed not artsy enough (same reason why crafts get overlooked as an art too)

I find it interesting that she felt pressured to draw anything other than pop culture references, because everyone else around me suggested as a way of promoting my art, but I feel like it's not valued enough these days when someone makes something unique. I draw with great meeting behind my art, and I rarely draw pop culture characters or celebrities. I one time added saitama to an old drawing, which wasn't even manga in the first place, it was some form of blue pen and realism, but I dropped that in there because I thought it was funny. Other than that, I am an aspiring mangaka who is working on her own works, and I feel that personally made artwork is not valued enough. Overall, in general, all art should be valued and no one especially to the artist's face should critique them, it's something they put their heart and soul into. I know that a lot of people have come up to me and tell me that I should really draw popular characters and such, but that's not my thing. I have a very specific way of drawing, and I'm working on multiple stories that will take a few years before they're published, but nonetheless I'm going to draw the characters from those stories, up until they are published. I feel like people should appreciate art for what it took, the meaning behind it, not just because it shallowly portrays some person they like. I'm not saying to under appreciate the artist that do do that, there's always some sort of passion tied to that, but a lot of times, if you usually post art that is only of your own interests, of your own characters, and then you make something that is slightly of reference to something in pop culture, people are like oh wow! That reminds me of blah blah blah so and so or whatever. Sometimes it's a compliment, other times it's insulting, or just plain sad, because either that character doesn't have anything to do with what they're talking about in the first place, and also it's sad because they are only into art that portray what they like in pop culture, everything seems to be about pop culture these days. I appreciate artists and other people who appreciate art for the sake of it being art, what is behind it, not just because it's their favorite character. I guess I feel like sometimes some of these people are the same people that will give you drawing advice when they barely have any knowledge, or it's just not their place and it's inappropriate. I know I recently had someone critique my art for not supposedly having clean enough of lines, and that's not very important, just as long as it's understandable what you're drawing, and in fact I think sometimes I should be embraced as an art style. You see people won't critique Picasso for making funky looking colorful people, but apparently my lines need to be as straight as an architect drawing. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I learned those basically from my dad, who was wearing architectural engineering in college. He said that straight clean lines were very very important, as they were illustrating designs for buildings and such. It was very very important, to help the other designers understand exactly exactly where the wall and the floor meet, and what shape everything is. In general art, this is not necessary, unless you decided it. If you want to go down that route, that's fine, but don't go around critiating other people because their lines aren't straight enough for you. It does not need to be as straight as a strip of washi tape, we are all human, it's okay to make mistakes, or to just have a different art style. I recently had someone telling me that my art had too many squiggly lines, but I didn't even ask for their advice on my art. Again, I personally feel it's inappropriate to give someone art advice if they do not explicitly ask. They did ask if I was up for constructive criticism, but I specified that I would be open to constructive criticism when it comes to posting or promoting my CZcams channel places, although I did not directly say anything about my art, because that tends to come off wrong. A lot of people think that artists who are not willing to take constructive criticism or just brash and over proud and not willing to improve, but it's usually exactly the opposite. In fact, they might have some insecurities, due to their families not really accepting them as a person or being critiquing of everything they do, especially in art, because it's not what they expected of them, or they just think they're bad at everything. Not all of us have this experience, but many of us have, and it's important that outsiders understand this. They're not being selfish, they likely either just have issues or they just never ask you in the first place. Don't give advice if no one asked specifically for what you are suggesting. Sorry, I guess I'm still upset about it, because for a long time, I felt insecure about the lines in my art not being clean enough, and it actually really helped me when one of my friends explicitly told me that she loved how my art wasn't all clean line, because it reminded her 90s manga, prior to when digital manga drawing was standard were used at all. She seemed to have liked the more organic, handmade feeling, rather than everything looking so straight and cleanlined. For background, and her own art, she's obsessive about clean lines, but she genuinely enjoyed my art for not being that way, being a bit rebellious and open and free-spirited. So, that did help me a little bit, but I still feel like generally speaking, people shouldn't be telling other people how they should do art, unless it was asked specifically

It makes me so sad that art isn't considered important & being an artist isn't considered a 'real' job. Here's the thing about work, we essentially all do the same thing, regardless of whether you're a doctor or a cleaner, when you work you are exchanging your time/skill/knowledge for their money. Every job is simply that. If you are getting paid for your time, it's a job! Regarding art, the current pandemic has really highlighted the importance of it. Many people around the world have been locked down..imagine being stuck at home with no TV, no films, no books, no music, no images....art is what has got most people through the lockdowns!
I'm so sorry that you had to give up your art career & that your family were unsupportive of you following your passion. I wish you all the best with rebuilding it & hope that you have a successful future.

My pay is just enough to get by but my wife told me she does not support me not working from home anymore and I need to get a 9-5 or move out. I love my wife but I also have put my heart and soul into my art passion. She has told me she never saw my art as a real job and that she was just being patient. It hurts to hear especially from a loved one, but being realistic making a living from doing art takes way more effort than any 9-5 and can be very difficult to support yourself on.

Personal art for me is very cathartic, but I'm aiming to be in advertising, book illustration, greeting cards, really whatever, I'm really great when someone tells me "I want this this and this", that stuff doesn't have meaning, it just needs to be what the client wants. I don't need to make my art mean something to make it in the art world, if I want people to feel something I'll make something like that, but if I don't, I'm allowed to.

Draw everyday has been the best art advice I've ever received. The peice I'm the most proud of was produced on a day when I wrote in huge letters in my art journal: "I don't wanna draw today, but I must." I wrote that around 11pm & what I wrote a 2:20am is "I feel so much better working on this peice was very healing." I knew I had the capability of producing semi-realistic art, but that was the 1st time I'd come closest to drawing exactly what I saw. I have Sickle Cell Anemia & struggle with depression. That night was so special because I was in both physical & emotional pain, but I was able to tackle & complete a challenge that I wouldn't have if I hadn't forced myself to draw everyday.
Thank you for reminding me to draw everyday again. I just got out of the hospital & came home to news that my beloved cat died. I haven't picked up a pencil since the 10th of March. I think drawing may help to deal with this pain.

I think the main problem with art groups these days, is that they act like it's some sort of strict thing that you must abide by, there's only one way and one path, and that you should not just follow your own whims, you should follow their commands. This is not a healthy attitude towards anything, especially when you are doing something that is related to something so intimate into yourself and art is a huge journey within yourself. I know this from experience, I've been drawing since I was very little, and I only got some art advice from family members when I was little, and sometimes from my art teacher, but that's it. My art teacher was very very supportive, and my family members thankfully did not see the flaws in my art at the time LOL. I'm very thankful for my art teacher though, she is so sweet and fun and happy and bubbly, she is definitely one of those good boomers. She wanted to help nurture the artist within all of us, which meant she acknowledged each and every one of us had her own art journey. She would definitely encourage certain things, but not force them. If you explicitly said you didn't want to do something she will try not to mention it again, unless you bring it up. She would basically hand us materials that were oftentimes not totally accessible an hour homes, as many of them were a little too expensive to adventure with at home, and we had this opportunity to try them out in a classroom environment. She would also introduce to us newer techniques, but again, it was very much like Bob ross, all of them were obviously suggestions, not straight up advice. By the way, about the drawing everyday thing, it's definitely beneficial, as I drew every day for years. I don't drive anymore, but I was drawing everyday because of my desire to, not because I was thinking oh I got to practice! One should never ever have that mentality when it comes to art, you should only only do art that day because you want to. If it feels annoying or begrudging, possibly rethink the reasons why you started drawing. It should purely be something that you enjoy, and if you decide to make a career out of it, then it will be one of those jobs that is so fun but you somehow make money. Basically, the most important thing is, draw on your own whims, so if drawing every day feels gratuitous but you normally have fun drawing, then just do that. Although, uncomfortable and you start hearing voices in your head pushing yourself down, especially if they sound like your friends or family or teachers, then reanalyze why you started drawing the first place. Was it to satisfy them and their desires of what they saw on you? Or was it for your own pure self enjoyment, something that helped ground you, a way to express yourself, was it something purely out of your own benefit? Or was it to make the people around you happy? I don't mean that it's wrong to make others happy with your art, I mean that shouldn't be you're so reason for it. I'm talking about if your teacher/parents push art upon you, especially a certain method of learning it, then it's time to rethink your reasons. You could also reclaim it by telling yourself no, this is my journey, they have no right to put into it. If I want to draw, I want to draw, and if I want to draw, I'm going to do it in my own way, my own journey, my own style. I only take advice if I really truly desire it, not because I feel like I should. This will lead you to greatness, following your own gut feelings. We were all built with the purpose, and whoever created this universe and put you on this Earth does not want you to do something that makes you miserable, or at the expense of your mental health. Whoever created this universe, only wants you to love yourself, love what you do, and not do it for the sole reason of the adults around you. You should be proud of yourself, your art, as a reflection of your inner self, as a fun hobby, you can turn into good money. It all boils down to basically, please do art for fun purely, for your own pleasure, make sure it's enjoyable, don't sacrifice yourself too much.

The thing about art is, everyone’s a critic. I think having confidence in yourself, your abilities, knowledge and experience of your chosen art style helps loads. One thing you learn if you go on to study an art field is which advice is worth listening to and which advice you can ignore.
That’s the great thing about advice, you don’t always have to listen to it 😁.

"Your art has to have meaning." Non-representational art, art with meaning in the eye of the beholder. Or none at all. We're not all fluent in sounding like art professors, or pulling smart-sounding nonsense from our backsides.
I have a niece and nephew who are artists. My nephew is into realism, and my niece non-representational and abstract. She is always being asked, "What is it?" of her pieces and I found her one day altering her work to add features so people would stop asking her. Shapes she had found pleasing suddenly grew feet and beaks, turned into birds she wasn't as happy with. Her brother said that her work "never means anything", .but because of his young age he phrased it less politely. "She just does stupid stuff". No harm meant, just honest as he saw it. I got them a couple of books from the library, one suited to each of them. Hers was a book on great abstract and non-representational art. When I told them how much these paintings are valued at, and the museums showcasing them, the brother told his sister, "Keep making stupid stuff!"

"Don't trace. It's cheating." I taught myself how to draw without ever once tracing, and it took me years to overcome the "tracing is cheating" mentality, even knowing how artists of antiquity had tricks to do exactly that. You know what I finally figured out? I end up erasing all those lines before I do the actual work, which (for my style) consists of delicate shading. Actually, I have a distaste for contour lines and use them as little as possible. Tracing can be a helpful tool in prepping your work. It is NOT the work itself. Make the work your own and all that, don't steal, approach it however you want and own it.
I'll get hell for saying that, but I'm far enough along to not give a damn.

The whole "only paintings are real art" thing buggs me to no end!! I'm someone who draws realistic portraits (mainly of celebrities, so I get a lot of the "fanart isn't real art" thing as well...) and I get comments all the time from people calling my art "paintings" when it's very obviously a drawing. At first I thought it was just a language barrier, lost in translation thing, but it kept happening and even people who speaks the same language as me would refer to it as paintings and I slowly came to realise that people don't see drawings as legitimate art. They seem to think that because my art is "too good to be childish drawings" it must be referred to as paintings and it boggles my mind that that seems to be what people are thinking like??? I'm very proud of my drawings. I've been drawing portraits for about 10 years now and have gotten pretty good at it and when someone calls it a painting it just makes me feel like my chosen medium is being looked down on.

Making an entire finished piece everyday is very harsh for anyone tbh, and personally i think the value of sketching/quick doodles is underappreciated. Some days I can make like 3 finished illustrations. Some days I just doodle on the corners of my notes, or sketch a little drawing in my free time. I personally think its good for artists to try to doodle when they can/make non serious little sketches whenever they can.

If you're not a good artist, your digital art won't be good. @baizhuwaitingroom7057 Před 3 lety +1

"Draw everyday" paired with how much I already had to draw for uni literally gave me a 6+ months long art block that I'm still recovering from. Only recently did I start feeling the familiar itch to create again. The burnout was real. I couldn't find it in myself to pick up a pen and enjoy it, I couldn't even force myself to doodle whatever, I felt like I had no brain power to do it, and simultaneously I was feeling guilty (because "if you're a professional artist you can't wait for inspiration and motivation to come, you just gotta do what you gotta do") and terrified that each day that went without me drawing meant I was going to forget how to do it and deteriorate and waste all my hard work, because that's what I've always heard and been told. After not drawing for x time I was sure I wouldn't even know how to draw a basic figure, and guess what... I still do. It's all still there. All it takes is just to warm up and do the usual thing you do to study and practise and your skills are going to be fine and it isn't the end of the world like I've been taught.
If art is your career, having to draw everyday or nearly everyday is most likely inevitable, but it's so, so wrong to be expected to be able to be peak creative all the time, without ever taking a day off, and preferably constantly doing personal side projects and 10 artist studies a month. Maybe some people can do it, but for me it almost killed my passion, it made me question if I should have chosen an art course to begin with and whether I really have it in me to be an artist, and in the end contributed to me failing my third year, because I was physically and mentally incapable of keeping up, and the constant pressure to work like a horse and produce art 24/7 ruined me. Taking breaks is ok. Having limits to your creativity is ok.

And if anyone tells me “can’t” is a nonsense word I can show them my medical records. It makes me feel like garbage and has even driven me to contemplate suicide. I used to hate myself for it. Because I had the pressure of drawing every day I felt that I would never improve, that if I can’t draw every day then whatever I produced didn’t count as art and therefore worthless and ugly. Once I stopped drawing every day and started drawing because I wanted to and was actually expressing myself and my special interest, I immediately started improving. Everyone’s brains are different. One size does not fit all. Practice and draw the way that works best for you. You are valid and your artwork is valid.

Wow, you are so stunning! I love your advice. As a struggling beginner artist, this really helped. I sketch as a hobby, and then if I'm feeling good about myself I may scan the sketch in the printer and then paint the copy (I make a copy so that if I make a mistake while painting then I don't ruin the sketch). I like watercolor the most, but I'm trying to get my mom to help me learn oil painting (My mom and my moms mom are both really good artist, my mom's mom actually teaches a painting class). I use sketching and painting to express myself. When I am in a bad mood I use a lot of reds and blacks, when I am feeling sad I tend to use more blues and a lot of dark colors. When I'm in a good mood yellow and purple and greens or my fav to use.
My favorite things to sketch are animals, mainly animals in abusive situations. IE, dogs on heavy chains, horses with hug bits, or skinny and malnourished. Horses with scars from the spurs and whips, mouths bleeding from the bit. Dogs with wounds from fights or from being beaten. I use my drawing as my own way to tell people about the corrupt way we treat our animals. They should be treated with love and respect. God trusted us to take care of them.
My drawing are not the good but I am getting better.

I started out my artwork drawing shapes, and stuff as shapes put together. My friend said "If you really want to be good at art, you shouldnt start off with shapes." "Draw the real thing, youre not a child."

That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard, most really good artists tell you to break things down into the simple shapes.

Every art book/video about developing a more 3d look advises starting with shapes. Your friend was clearly misinformed. It's so important to get advice for the proper sources. I doubt Temi will see my comment, but I hope she'll do a video on the best on the best advice & how to know who's trustworthy.

Along the lines of "get a real job" I hated it when people said "art is just a hobby" and that I can't make any money. Then in the next breath they want me to draw/paint them something for free like they're doing ME a favour. Ugh! Great video thank you!!
