So, you’ve been testing your battery and alternator on a regular basis following my video ( • How To Test Car Batter... ) and have decided it’s time for a new alternator and/or battery [you’d never leave it ‘til you broke down, would you?]. You’ve had a look under the bonnet and are wondering how to get it out from that space and wondering how to deal with the belts because you can’t see any tensioner. Well, you’ve come to the right place. Settle down with a cuppa and bone up on how it’s done before getting the spanners out.
A couple of words of caution:
make sure you get the correct belt kit: with and without aircon
make sure to disconnect the battery FIRST
I came across this video after doing the job, but include it here because it might help you out. It’s only 90 seconds long but shows how you can get the belts back on with the aid of a cable tie. The only thing I would do differently is to still crank the engine by hand rather than the starter • Ford Fiesta Stretch Be...

Something I didn't cover in this video is cars with and without aircon.
Cars without aircon have one belt and the pas pump is low down on the front of the engine.
On cars with aircon, the compressor is low at the front and the pas pump is displaced to the rear top of the engine with a dedicated drive belt.
I've put a picture showing the two belt layouts in the 'community' section.

Wow, Went and did this today on my MK5 Fiesta 16v and it worked a treat.. i did however have a manre getting the lower bolt off the alternator while it was on the jack stand with the wheel off....after a few minutes head scratching i put the wheel back on and lowered the car back down, this allowed me to take the lower bolt out as the whole engine was moving whilst the car was aloft.....something to consider for budding DIY Mechanics out there...Cheers for the inspiration...my Car no longer sounds like a Buzzing Go Cart....

hello cyd , just getting back to you as you requested regarding the whining sound i had from the belt area of the fiesta, i tried the stethoscope and pencil that you recommended and its works a treat, anyway the noise was coming from the idler pulley so have replaced that and it all seems ok now! many thanks for all your help and advice, hope all is well with you and your family. thank you. the dark knight.

AWESOME❗ Such a simple tool and method, yet capable of leading one right to the source of an issue. My son has an idler pulley screeching on his VW 1.2TSi and I've since bought a proper mechanics stethoscope, so expect to see more about tracking down noises soon.

Seriously wish I saw this video two days ago. The directions all say turn clockwise and the belt slips off the water pump spindle if you do this. We had spent money on the one tool set... then on the little guide tool.. in hopes if being able to get it on. But you were right... waste of money. In the end a slow work through by hand.. COUNTER clockwise ... and the belt was on in 15 minutes (video watching included).
We didn't need the alternator replacement... and our model only has one belt (serpentine onto the alternator).

hello cyd, just wanted to say how much i enjoy your videos! easy to understand, well explained and no irritating background music, and you speak clearly ! i have bought a fiesta 1.2 petrol engine recently which makes a whining sound when started which then goes away, it seems to be coming from the belt area so do you think it might just be that they need renewing?? anyway hope you and your family have a nice christmas and new year and keep safe. thank you, the dark knight.

thank you for your quick reply and advice cyd ! i will try that in the new year! the car runs fine at the moment! after taking a closer look and listen it appears to makes a clicking noise and faint whine which vanishes after about 50 seconds , always when its first started from cold , then it makes no noise once warmed up and used through the day.anyway i will take your great advice and wish you a peaceful christmas and new year. regards the batman.

I have a 2007 Mk 6 (!) Ford Fiesta Ghia Automatic 1.6 litre 5 door. Need to have a new alternator fitted but I was told by one garage that they wouldn't know the type of alternator (seemingly it could be one of two) until they removed the old one! Another garage said they used the registration number to find the correct type of alternator! Yet the first garage also quoted the registration number and the parts supplier said it could be one of two! Please help me, which garage is correct?

It needs to be removed to change the thermostat housing also.

Excellent video Cyd... The major problem I have is getting the longer belt back on the car, without the belt slipping off the idler when the tension is applied... Everytime the belt is nearly on it slips off.. I have the correct belt .. any suggestions would be very gratefully received.

Clean the idler pulley with brake or carb cleaner. Give the flat side of the belt a clean too with cleaner on a cloth. It should grip the pulley then.

If the battery is healthy and well charged and you keep all electrical accessories OFF, you might be able to make it home. You should only need a new belt. Be sure to clean the pulleys thoroughly with brake cleaner before fitting in case of oil contamination.

Thank you mate. just wondering i just done changing my 2 belts anf alternator and now i can hear squeaky noise when i switch my ac on and does new alternator make whining noise? and one morething sometimes i can smell rubber is that normal? thanks

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  Před 4 lety

The squeaky noise could be many things, but I would suspect either the idler pulley bearings or the compressor bearings. Get yourself a mechanics stethoscope bit.ly/mech_steth to help you track it down and watch this czcams.com/video/jnTWmG41vX8/video.html.
Alternators often make a light whining noise when they are under load, make sure your battery is properly charged with a charger bit.ly/Charger_12V_6A then tcheck it unloaded and loaded.
Also make sure the pulleys all line up perfectly, especially the new alternator pulley, just in case you've fitted it out of line or fitted the wrong one. Also make sure that the belts are properly aligned to the pulleys with all the poly Vs properly in the grooves.
👆👆 CHECK these things - do not fall into the trap of allowing yourself to think "I don't need to check that, I know I did it right"
