I am German and I have to say 4:58 made me laugh so hard that my eyes teared up lmao. GJ James
As a Brazilian, I can say it with confidence, WE ALL LOVE THIS LITTLE BUGS. Yesterday was the National "fusca's" festival here in São Paulo
Every Brazilian loves this car
It has a soul,
It's like a person for us, they have nicknames and people respect it more on the traffic than the other veichles

@@pauloluciomachadodebrito8107 no shit the beetles have nicknames
It is not only on brazil
As a Czech myself, I am so glad that an origin story of the beetle finally acknowledges the Tatra.
@Jake DuRapau Mann.....just don't😂.
Jinak jsem rád že v Česku nekoukám na Donut sám😃
The beetles look may have been inspired by the Tatra but the car was engineered by Porsche and his team from the ground up.
@@justanmr2973 fun fact, he was born there but he was Austrian. He didn't speak Czech, and didn't live in Czechoslovakia for long.
Dude I can not thank you enough for mentioning TATRA and Czechoslovakia. My country!
Most car guys here in the US know that Porsche had stolen designs for the Bug. They may not know what Nation or Company it was taken from.
They still make Tatra trucks for the Indian Army 10 kilometres from where I live. Absolute masterpieces!

That’s because The Beetle is basically a Mexican Culture Icon.
we call it “vocho” to this day you see tons of beetles on the streets, reliable, economic and Cool looking 😎
PartyPoison785 - theyre actually semi cheap there there was a fully restored one near my grandmas house selling for 2000
Namesmauro that’s pretty affordable for a Car that is that Reliable, economic and Fun to drive man

@@That1Guineapig. well they stopped being made modern or not (preferably 1930s-1979) it's a good car
This series is a gold mine. Great editor. Great writer. Great host. Keep it up
Daniel Williams
Great host?!? Then why is it my GF, mom, sons and every other family member that overheard me listening to these videos think that the host is ridiculous and cringy AF and suggests that I might be as crazy as he is because I watch his videos? To be fair, he does mostly scream his way through every presentation like a teenage metal vocalist.
Brandon Hall
In case you missed it - it wasn’t I who was being critical of his style. Earbuds or headphones will not change the fact that his style IS cringy AF anyway. Whether or not other people dislike it will not have an effect on whether or not I continue to listen to it in or outside their ability to hear him
It kinda blew me away they haven't done Corvette yet. Just about every other long standing american car has been covered.
The edits are amazing!😂👏🏽
That surfer girl scene, I literally just blew drink out my nose when you said the herpies line.
"..the pipe dream of a tyrant that went on to charm the whole world and became a symbol of love..." I was like; 'Hitler or the car?' for a few seconds.

Tatra actually sued Volkswagen again after the war and was awarded reparations of 1000000 Deutschmarks in the mid 60s
Edit: Was actually 3 million deutschmark in 1961
Planning on getting a drivers license soon. But when I do, I want a Old Beetle (I dont like the new one)
I've always loved the old beetle
You're probably going to have to pay through the nose for them because they aren't getting cheaper, at least not the ones in good condition.
Me too, my dad was working on a 1970 when he was a kid, he sold his car because he could barely afford to eat, but he kept all the parts. Now I’m gonna buy a 70 and finish what he started, I have what I need to slam it, and I have most the parts I need to get more power, don’t listen to these other comments. My grandpa has a 1967 ss chevelle, he got smoked by a 70 beetle, they are light and still quick even by today’s standards, they need love but they sure can move

From the 80's till mid 2000's half, or even more, cars you would see around Mexico City were VW Beetles or "Vochos" how we use to call them.
I'm a very proud brazilian owner of a 1968 VW. I drove my bug all day long today and it made me very happy!
I had a 1972 VW Beetle. I loved that car. It was so fun to drive and get around. Small so you can park in some of the smallest parking spots. Easy to repair. Gosh, it was easy to repair. It was a great little car.
True, i even mod it and changed the original SOLEX Carb into AISAN (Toyota Kijang) ones and gosh the fuel consumption is better
We Mexicans do love our Beetles.
Jim Jeremy Johnson . I had a 2001 Jetta that smelled like crayons! And I knew someone with the same car and it did too! It’s weird lol
And it was just discontinued yesterday with its last beetle rolling off the production line in Puebla.
That whole skit at 6:05 is the reason I finally subscribed to Donut today
"When you hit the horn you would hear Hitler say....."
NEIN NEINN NEIN!!!!
You guys don't even imagine how popular is the Beetle in Brazil. Thousands of mint condition _"Fuscas"_ (how it is called here) share the streets with brand new cars, as if they shared dealers windows. Wich is pretty cool imo
For those with some spare cash, it's a very common way into the car culture to buy one as a first project car.
Aldo Pinheiro
I have always been amazed at how well they thrive in warmer climates for an air cooled car designed in the relatively cold climate of Deutschland! There are still so many of them chugging away in service in Mexico, as well.
I was a rear passenger in a Baja Bug that had the rear seats removed and had shag carpet instead (pretty cool). On the way back from fishing the driver over corrected on a sweeping turn and flipped the Bug four times. During which time the battery arose from under my seat and went out the passenger window. We were relatively unharmed but the Bug was toast. Good times.
As a Brit with a slightly pompous accent, I live for James's impressions of us
"you know what I heard?" "What?" "He has herpes" XD
Finn Ross he said Herbies...like the white vw in the films etc....play on words...
Dustin Gray thats the only time he mentioned Herbie and he said the Lindsey Lohan 2005 movie and not the Love Bug😢😢😢😢
4:59
*NEIN NEIN NEIN!*
One thing to keep in mind: by 1930s standards, the VW was actually pretty fast. Granted, it was old fashioned and underpowered by the standards of the day when it finally went into mass production...
And when you press the horn you'll hear Hitler screaming NEIN NEIN NEIN.
I think you just sold me on a beetle.
I want a beetle, it’s nostalgic to me. Growing up in Mexico City my uncle had one and that thing was unbreakable, he stuffed 8 people in it and drove to Acapulco, which at the time was a crazy road trip because there was no highway like today’s. Bad ass for sure
I wish you had explained how the Porsche got some of its design feature from the beetle (more details than just that Porsche worked at VW)
Make an Up to Speed episode about 24 Hours of Le Mans pls!
Daniel O'Steen absolutely. And this racing series can be described by James as same as Group B. So, an amazing episode
It still is the best-selling car of all time. Corolla and Civic are just nameplates: the ones sold today have nothing in common with the originals. The final Beetle sold in 2003 is so closely related to the first one sold in the late 30s that you could literally swap each car's body onto the other's floorpan.
Not according to current records. The Corolla is considered the best selling nameplate of all time. That's despite the fact that there were 3 generations of the Beetle. Also, the RWD Beetles and the FWD Golf-based Beetles are not interchangeable!
@@johnnymason2460 Good thing I wasn’t talking about the FWD Beetles, then.
The original, air-cooled Beetle was in production in Mexico up until 2003 and sold over 21 million units, and that’s not even counting the supplementary Super Beetle.
@@TBustah I stand corrected. All the first generation Beetles are interchangeable. However, the Beetle nameplate includes all 3 generations. Even with that, the Corolla is still considered the best selling nameplate of all time.
@@johnnymason2460 Again, I was never comparing nameplate vs nameplate. I was talking about individual DESIGNS. Of course the Corolla and other nameplates have sold more, I suggested as much in my original comment, but you can’t rightfully call the current Corolla and the original the same car. They share nothing but the name. One’s a modern FWD compact, and the other is RWD, the size of a cracker box, and was never powered by anything bigger than a carbureted engine that made half the power of the modern Corolla’s BASE engine. A fairer comparison would be how much each Corolla generation sold, or even how many units were sold over the course of generations that were closely related.
The beetle won't be a thing next year 😭😭
Well of course, who buys beetles nowadays. They aren’t as beneficial as their competitors. Sales are just plummeting.
ThatOneCarGuy 3 i disagree. Of course, it’s a really cool car imo, and lots of people use them in kit cars and folkrace cars
Simon Aarekol Well yeah I agree, but I’m just saying that the sales numbers have been plummeting as competitors have been taking the lead. It’s a great car nonetheless, but these are no longer favorable for the majority of people
I have a Turbo S and I love it. I've modded it quite a bit, but even stock it was a fun little machine. Now it's a 300 hp monster that no one expects
that fake UK accent so freakin goood lmaooo
Yes this is true, as a British person I can confirm it is 100% accurate.

Can I just say, as a proud classic Saab owner (‘92 turb vert), I love the fact that your doing a story on VW bugs sitting next to that fine Swedish vehicle.
Born from jets baby! And yes, your Saab vid was the first I ever saw.
I live in Brazil, and i can that, we DO love the beetles, we love them so much that, in 1984 the beetle stopped Been produced here, in 2 years, we were have been so annoying to the president that he told to the VW factorys to return the production of the beetles in 1986, and It got been made till 1996 with a 1.8L Boxer.
Also in my contry this car is so easy to fix that some people use pliers and wire, and make a shit Ton of mods, like putting a 2.0L 4cyl turbo beetween 300hp to 700hp FOR DRAG RACING, some people survive, some get injured, and few one dies (but is rare bcs Brazilian RWD drivers are actually pretty good)
Our love for the for the car "Fusca" (Thats How we call the beetle) is so big that this car even have a day called "dia do Fusca" that means the "beetle's day", the when is celebrated the day the beetle for realesed here, a really cool day

I am old enough to remember the fantastic ads on TV, "Five pennies a mile!", to emphasize the economy concept. Wonderful memories from many in my past. They were like old Harley's - drive them until they break, fix them, repeat.......Most of my friends had some with many hundreds of thousands of miles and most if not all, repairs were DIY.
