In this clip, Smokey Robinson he talks about the experience of his former group, The Matadors, auditioning for Jackie Wilson's manager. The Motown legend explains that although the audition didn't go for the group, it served as his personal introduction to Barry Gordy, Jackie Wilson's primary songwriter. The R&B legend explains that because his group's audition featured nothing but original material that he wrote, Barry was highly impressed. After being told by Jackie Wilson's managers that his group would never make it, Barry approached him when they were outside about his music and the rest is history. - Zábava

That’s that old school, media training that R&B artists went through at Motown. Modern artists don’t go through that type of grooming.
As the old saying goes, when one door closes another one opens. And for Smokey and the Miracles, that door swung wide open. This man is a living legend, his longevity is incredible and a rarity people truly don't understand. Not only was he an amazing singer but he composed virtually all of the Miracles hits and crafted many for other artists on the label. His music will forever stand the test of time and it will outlast us all
You also gotta have the spirit and tenacity of a warrior, many don't become successful because they give up or make choices that aren't advantageous to their success.

I was born & raised in Detroit, Michigan. When I was 13 years of age, after hearing Marvin Gaye's music I had to meet him! (I had every album he ever made!) I did not know what a “Concert” was, but I snuck out the house, willing to bear the consequences of "getting in trouble" with my very strict Mother. A guy from school that had a crush on me drove me to Cobo Hall. After we arrived I excused myself and somehow I made it to the front row! Marvin Gaye reached out to me, held my hand and sang a part of "Distant Lover" to me...I will forever cherish those moments! There will never be another Marvin Gaye!...One of the most handsome & sexiest men that’s ever lived! My apologies to my Dear Mother, because as a teen if I didn't play my Distant Lover ALBUM one million times I've never played it! ❤❗☮

I met Smokey at a music store in 1988. It was at a very low time in my life. He was so nice and talked to him for about 15 minutes. It really cheered me up.
It's amazing to me that in that era of music, if you sounded like another artist or group of artists, it was a negative thing... NOW? Now, it's almost a prerequisite! That might be why the music from that era has the staying power that it has!
These guys ambition and ability to make things happen were insane. Look at ron banks, he was thirteen years old when he created the dramatics, not another group name that eventually became the dramatics, nah he had it all figured out at 13 🤯

I've been listening to that man since I was in my thirties even though I was born in 1980 I love that man's old songs to death even though the man been making hits in the sixties. For some reason he's the classic soul God always going to listen to him and he'd only one that still alive. Love this backup singers and they Harmony type voices.

My question has always been who were the so called geniuses who turned them down. They had to be kicking themselves because it wasn't long that Smokey became a sensational song writer and singer. It's obvious whoever it was surely didn't know anything about talent but Berry definitely did.
