    Have enjoyed this series, however i have also fallen in the tube rabbit hole and am approaching the ‘paid more for the tubes than i did the darkvoice’ stage of insanity. Time to pull the ripcord for me, can’t wait to enjoy the madness of your journey as well.

    Just ordered the Tung-sol today and waiting for it to arrive and came across your vid. Honestly the piano song made me think "wish I went for the EH 6SN7", especially on the high note, but I think we can EQ it a bit and make it what we want. But eventually the EH6SN7 will also be in my collection because tube rolling is so tempting.
    Thanks for the great video.

    Great video, could hear some differences with the 3. don’t think Utube can do this test true justice, I have heard a distinct difference and prefer the TungSol with a Chesky HQ CD tho. I believe you did as well as platform allows !! Nice job

    I really like the Tung-sol tube. There was a definite difference in how open the sound was. It's subtle, but it's there. I'm having a very tough time saying it's better or worse than the Electro-Harmonix 6SN7. They are just different from each other. I do feel the mids and lower end opens up a bit more with this tube, but the top end gets a little clinched off. Not by much. So if you like more lower end and mids, this is a great tube. It does not destroy the highs, though, they are still very much present. The Electro-Harmonix just has a little higher levels in the highs, but cuts the lows off just a bit. I do like the Tung-Sol for all around all music, but I really like the Electro-Harmonix on older rock since the bass lines aren't as punchy in those songs, it's not needed, and the guitars and higher-set voices seem to shine a bit more, but if I had to get just one of the two, the Tung-sol may have to be it, but I really like both. I cannot decide what to leave in there for now. (OH WELL, Time to move to a 1960s tube and see what that does. Subscribe to get notified when it's ready)

    I own both, and for me tung sol is clear winner ;) Tung sol sound is more open(for me its a night and day difference!), while I find EH tubes higjs a bit harsh.

    Fantastic work! Been meaning to try tube rolling one day too..
    Just curious, do you run 110 voltage in where you live? Do you get the infamous weird hum or buzzing noise on specific channel from the amp on specific tube?

    • @5PortStudios
      @5PortStudios  Před 2 lety +1

      I do run on 110 60hz and yes I do get the 60hz hum sometimes. A good burn-in is something I do to all of my tubes, but if they have a hum, I most likely have to burn-in longer. It usually is both channels to begin with, but sometimes it's only one and sometimes it's both and then one or the other. I have a write-up on my burn-in method that I can copy and paste if you need, too. Thank you for watching, I'm really happy you liked the video.

    Awesome video. Are you doing this post-burn in and if so, for how many hours?

    • @5PortStudios
      @5PortStudios  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, these were after burn-in. The electro-harmonix and the tung-sol both had a bit of a 60hz hum, but about 72 hours for the electro-harmonix and around 85-90 hours for the tung-sol and it was gone. I pulled the power tube before burning in and left them alone. Came back at 48 hours to check and then again at the 72 and however long it was for the tung-sol.

    In relation to the SOUD-STAGE, which of the two tubes wins?

    • @5PortStudios
      @5PortStudios  Před 2 lety +1

      I just relistened to them both from my original audio files side-by-side. The Electro-harmonix seems to have more of an airy-ness to it on the high end and the tung-sol is slightly bigger in the mids and lows. So I guess it would depend on what you like your sound stage to sound like. I like mids and lows for almost everything I listen to, and that to me, sounds bigger when they're more pronounced and to me that's more open (may not be everyone's definition, though). BUT, I can also see how that twinkle in the highs could make it feel more open as well. I don't know if that answers your question, but I figured I'd listen to them again for you and let you know what it seemed like to me.

    how did you get rid of the tung sol hum on the left channel?

    • @5PortStudios
      @5PortStudios  Před 3 lety +5

      Great question. This is what I do to every tube that has that hum in 1 or both channels:
      If you can, take the power tube out, leave the preamp (6SN7) in.
      Plug in some headphones if it’s a headphone amp (probably not needed, but I usually like running a resistance of some sort)
      Turn on and leave it alone for 24 hours.
      There should be no sound without the power tube. So you won’t know if it works until later.
      After 24 hours turn off amp, insert power tube.
      I usually wait about 10 minutes for the hot tubes to cool down.
      Power on, see if the hum is still there.
      Either way, if it is or isn’t, leave amp on for 20 or so minutes to warm the tubes, check again. You won’t need music to hear it. (I’ve heard quick cycling tubes can be bad for them, not sure about that, but when I turn on my amp I let it warm up regardless if I’m going to be turning it right back off)
      If hum is still present, turn off. Wait for power tube to cool and remove.
      Turn amp back on with only the preamp tube.
      Check in another 24 hours the same way as before.
      I usually need 72 or so hours. Longest I’ve ever taken was about 100 to get a hum out of a 1960s preamp tube.
      Not sure if true, but I try to not move or remove hot tubes. 20 minutes to warm up, 10-20 to cool down and then I can mess with them. I don’t leave my tube amp on when I’m not home so if I leave and I’m doing a burn-in I turn it off and then turn it back on when I get home (paranoid of fires when away).
      I hope this helps. Hums are annoying. 🤣😂

    hmm...the difference between the original and the Tung-sol is ...not very big. Both are warm, fuzzy and..well tuby . The difference to the Electro-Harmonix on the other hand is astonishing, and i like the latter way better. Highs are emphasized and the seperation is better(very apparent with the vocal track) which is something I enjoy a lot. I might actually get that one - very impressive

    • @5PortStudios
      @5PortStudios  Před 3 lety +1

      @@martinsoo6332 I do. The biggest difference I hear is just how clamped off everything sounds after going back to the stock tube. The video I did on the stock vs. electro Harmonix 6SN7 gives a little bit of that feeling and then add how much more open the bottom end sounds with the tung-sol. I don't think I'll have to go back to stock, unless I want to compare it with something else.

    Did you have a humming sound from your DarkVoice?

    • @5PortStudios
      @5PortStudios  Před 3 lety +1

      There is a possibility the preamp tube can have a hum if there’s air that’s seeped into it. I think mine did.
      Technically I think it’s called the “60hz hum” because it won’t matter the volume level or even having music playing. You’ll hear it.
      You may just have to let that air get out of it.
      I’ve had tubes take between 24 and 92 hours to burn-in and stop the hum.
      Here’s what I do any time I have a hum.
      1. Turn off amp, let cool.
      2. Take out power tube, leave preamp tube in.
      3. Plug in headphones (probably not needed but I do just because it’s habit)
      4. Turn on and leave it for 24 hours
      5. Come back and turn off. Let cool
      6. Plug in power tube
      7. Turn on amp. If it’s the 60hz hum it’ll be there as the tube warms up. If it’s still there, let it warm up for 5-8 minutes (I’ve heard turning a tube off right away can be bad, not sure though).
      8. If hum is still there. Turn off let cool, take out power tube, repeat process.
      -if hum is not there, play music and mess with the volume. If no hum, you’re good to go.

      @@5PortStudios its a consistent hum regardless of volume. I've read that many Russian Tungsol's don't lose the hum at all regardless of burn in, so was optimistic that you got yours to work. I've ordered the EH tube hopefully that fairs better!

      Greetings,
      Ah, an honest listener!
      I was not watching the meters, just reading the comments, and could not detect any switching, or changes, between the three tubes either.
      I just tube rolled my new Electro-Harmonix (matched pair) pre-amp tubes swapping out my old, original 6H8Cs. The EH sounded better, wider sound stage and better stereo, but then my 6H8Cs had thousands of hours on them. Not a fair appraisal.
