In this video Heimler shares his thoughts on how to lecture effectively in the classroom. These principles apply to lectures in the K-12 classroom as much as they to lecturing in college or lecturing on Zoom.
A good lecture is cast in a narrative arc, has kinetic energy abounding, and aims for the affections of the students. Admittedly, some of these principles are difficult to apply if you still have to lecture with a mask, but the difficulty does not diminish the principles.
If you have other principles on lecturing you've learned over the years, put them in the comments and let's start a discussion!

I've always said the same thing - if I can make you mad (indignant), sad, glad, or scared, you will learn the material better! Even better if I can combine several of those emotions.

thank you so much for this! I’m an illustrator with a little dream to become a teacher in honor of beautiful teachers like you who have managed to instill in my student self a continuing lifelong love of learning as well as to challenge rather unfortunate moments I had in school with teachers that didn’t know how to guide students properly. I hope to keep your tips in mind when I find opportunities to teach people down the line!

I'm just finishing my 5th year as a 2nd Career Science teacher and I am always seeking improvement as a teacher and I found your channel and I'm fairly sure you can help me improve as a Science teacher!!
I try to stimulate WOW into my high school students by blowing things up and demonstrating colorful ionic metal cation light emissions using bunsen burner flames ! I'm intrigued by your lecturing suggestions and how to translate that into Science lectures

Great video. There is a lot of pressure to use slides but its just so passive. I am much more natural at writing my notes. But I struggle with how to smoothly incorporate images that I would like to use when I write my notes. The other big question is, if it doesn't meet the Dorito criteria, then how does one deliver important content most effectively in those scenarios and lessons? Would love to see what a typical non-lecture lesson from you looks like in your classroom.

Well, that reference to the Thanksgiving lecture is one that I give every year. And in that one I use a lot of images of art produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that depict the first Thanksgiving. So I just have them projected with black slides between them so they're not up longer than I need them (thus a distraction). And I make sure they only take up half the white board so I can write like a madman. And for the second question, if I can't meet the Dorito criteria, then I come up with something interactive to deliver the content (Harkness discussions, group debate, etc. All the standard stuff). That means, in practice, I only give a proper lecture (i.e., it lasts more than half the class) a handful of times per semester. However, that doesn't mean I don't stand up and talk for 5-10 minutes at a time on a lot of other occasions. Sometimes I need to do that in order to introduce them to material that they'll need for the activity, or whatever.

This is so stupid. 1. thats not a narrative that's just two completely unrelated stories. 2. It's irrelevant not to mention distasteful to talk about someone dying a horrible way during your lecture especially considering it's totally irrelevant. 3. It's not 'building tension' it's just confusing everyone.

lol true. I was so confused. He must teach at a very high ability school. I could do 10 straight backflips in front of my class and they wouldn’t even know since they’re staring at their phones the entire time.
