My Aunt Mary was as much of an alcoholic as Joan Crawford and had good reason to be, She divorced her first husband after he punched their son Al in the mouth when he a baby for crying when he was teething and knocked him across his crib. She had a reputation in the family of being wild and crazy but everybody had a lot of respect for her especially after Al her only child died in Vietnam. She was utterly fearless and tough as nails having been a victim of severe abuse by her grandfather who survived being shot in the head as a police officer but with extreme mental problems and her mother who had eleven kids and no tolerance for the alcoholism and rebellion Mary embodied. A lot of Aunt Mary's nieces and nephews and kids of friends of her including myself were taken care of by her and I don't personally consider her abusive or evil because she spanked my butt once for throwing a tantrum during a snowball fight in her house where I got tossed out a window by somebody into a snowbank, She was funny as hell to live with and taught me to laugh at life's problems instead of crying over them like Christina Crawford did about getting her butt spanked by a woman who made her a rich Hollywood celebrity,

In Christina's "Mommie Dearest" she wrote of an incident whereby she ALLEGES Joan Crawford strangled her after she returned home from boarding school for summer vacation in June 1953. When Christina wrote of this allegation, she stated Joan had "a look in her eyes that will never be erased from my memory." After this ALLEGED altercation, Christina was sent immediately back to boarding school.
Christina published "Mommie Dearest" in October 1978. Nearly simultaneously to her writing this FRAUDULENT memoir, Christina was court ordered to be questioned in an UNDER-OATH deposition by Joan Crawford's estate in February 1978.
During her UNDER-OATH, court-ordered deposition, Christina is specifically questioned about this incident, to which she responded:
"I don't know what you are referring to," and continues to evade the questions regarding this incident.
In addition to Christina's complete, on the record, CONTRIDICTION of this event, the EYE-WITNESS to this event came forward in 1981 to confirm Christina LIED in her book.
That EYE-WITNESS is Billie Greene, She was Joan's assistant at the time.
Greene stated in her unpublished interview:
"I believe I'm quoted as saying 'Stop, you'll kill her."...I can tell you that I've never seen any discipline towards Christina or the other children that I would call out of control. There was not brutality that night."

Some assume that Christina wasn't payed by her mother when she left like Joan Crawford had done for her other two children, however she payed for her institution for university if I'm not mistaken. I believe Christina Crawford wrote all this about her late mother Joan Crawford because she hated the way she was during the feud of Betti Davis and her...that is when she became desperate for the stage and fame. I believe Betti Davis' daughter had similar ideas for the neglect she was given. When things don't add up in a story, they don't add up for a reason.

OMG...! Someone else who endured this same thing, sans the fortune and fame! When the novel "Mommie Dearest" came out, as an avid and voracious reader since the age of 6, I bought a copy as a teenager, and I was reading it one day when my very own mommie dearest came home from work, and SHE WENT OFF!! What really struck me was the fact that I read other novels in front of her, like Valley of the Dolls; no reaction. I read racy Sidney Sheldon novels; no response....ditto for Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter, and again, no reaction from her. Until she saw me reading THIS ONE; I suppose it just hit a little too close to home for her.
I remember reading SO MANY parts of that novel, incidents that were nearly identical to things that my own mother had done to ME and my older half-brother, and I almost came up out of my chair, reeling in this.... fascinated horror, because YES! I could, unfortunately, relate to this same scenario, this same dynamic, the same horrific verbal, emotional, and physical ABUSE!
My dad was no help, so it did no good to say anything to him, either; not that he didn't know about the things she said and did to us, HE DID, but....he had his own issues, and he lived in fear of that evil bitch until the day he died, being the mousy, weak, ineffective father that he was.
I went no contact 18 years ago, and I never looked back, I've never had even one regret about that decision.
I believe you, and I understand. I was in therapy for years over the things I had to endure; I wanted to send her all of the bills, but....my insurance covered all of it, so I never did, but I should have anyway, and returned the money to my insurer. No one else will ever be able to believe or understand something like this when they never lived it.

Christina Crawford claims in "Mommie Dearest" that she was strangled by Joan Crawford in the summer of 1953.
Here is how she describes this incident in her book:
"The choking pain of her fingers around my throat met the thudding ache of the blow to the back of my head. She banged my head on the floor, tightening her grip around my throat....I gasped for air and felt myself sinking into unconsciousness as I tried desperately to fight back....If something or someone didn’t help me very soon I was going to die. I tried with the last bit of my strength to struggle free of those choking fingers and managed to wedge one of my knees between her body and mine and push upward on her ribs with my hands which loosened her grip slightly. It at least allowed a trickle of air down my throat and kept me from losing consciousness."
-This type of physical attack would, no doubt, leave bruises to the neck and throat. However, according to Christina, she had no bruises to the neck or throat, and the bruises she claims to have received to the face were greatly diminished within "a few days."
This is what Christina Crawford said regarding her "injuries" after this alleged strangulation:
"I had one black eye and a cut on my upper lip that was swollen and covered with dried blood. My whole face was sort of puffy and I had a perfect handprint bruised across one cheek....A few days later I was on my way back to the Chadwick’s house...I still had vestiges of the black eye but the rest of my face had returned pretty much to normal."
-This claim is medically impossible. Brusies to the face take at least a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks to fade. Perhaps this was a quick rationale by Christina in her book to account for no one seeing these "injuries" after she returned to Chadwicks.
By 1988. Christina Crawford claimed in her book "Survivor" that the stroke she suffered in late 1981 was the result of this "strangulation." Christina claimed the strangulation caused an embolism (a blood clot) that blocked the flow of blood to her brain, and this embolism had lied dormant for over 28 years (1953 - 1981) without causing issue before it dislodged and flowed to her brain.
This claim, in and of itself, is medically improbably, if not impossible. However, the impossibility is further enhanced when considering that Christina did not even have bruising to her throat from this alleged strangulation.
      In "Survivor" Christina writes:
"In the hospital the doctors questioned me as thoroughly as they could about possible causes of my stroke. They were interested in what might have been a source of original damage to the left carotid artery in my neck since I had no history of high blood pressure or high cholesterol. They asked me about a car accident or a neck injury. I had experienced none. The only incident I could think of was a violent argument my mother and I had when I was thirteen years old. She had been drinking at the time and flew into a rage. I recalled this incident in the book Mommie Dearest, not knowing at the time I wrote about it that I would later have a stroke"
This outrageous allegation is further debunked by a 1978 sworn deposition, whereby Christina DENIES knowledge of this incident. Along with a 1980 interview with the secretary (Billie Greene) who was an eye witness the evening Christina claimed this strangulation took place. Greene refuted the claim that Joan strangled or choked Christina.
Billie Greene -Former secretary to Joan Crawford-unpublished interview 1980
“I believe I am quoted [in Christina’s book regarding the LIE that is the strangling incident] to have said something like, “Stop, you’ll kill her.” There was a point where they were having an argument. What precipitated it was possibly one of many misunderstandings. Or where Christina had lied to Joan, and the hostility was getting greater. Joan came towards her and gave her a good swat, and hit her towards the neck area. I remember at one point taking Joan’s arm when it was in midair and saying, “I want you to stop. You’re going to hurt her.” This was not for Christina’s sake. This was for Joan’s sake. No one wants to see anyone out of control. I can tell you that I’d never seen any discipline towards Christina or towards the other children that I would call out of control. There was not brutality that night. Possibly there was rage. I can’t conceive of the distortion, unless Christina had a deep-seated plan, a vendetta that was present even when she was 14. Christina lied often for absolutely no reason. [The book] was a pack of lies that made your hair stand on end. I have utter contempt for Christina."

Kelsey Haight: It's hard to believe that those monster eyebrows were ever fashionable, huh? Joan had very thin contoured eyebrows in her early pics, but they got thicker each year, eventually settling into the fat caterpillars. They look downright comical to me. She was known for her eyebrows & her mouth/lips. Her thick lips were actually an accident. When Joan was young (22-23 yrs old), she had 4 molar teeth removed on each side of her mouth in order to create distinctive cheekbones (a trick she had heard that Marlene Dietrich had done). Her mouth quickly became infected & very swollen... Her mouth was infected for quite a while before the infection was healed. But when her mouth returned to normal, her top lip remained swollen permanently. She used make-up to create a larger bottom lip in order to balance out her mouth area. Joan had recurring dental problems for the remainder of her life due to her early choice of removing molars (receding gums, painful infections, disintegrating jawbones). (BTW, no PROOF has ever been found stating that Marlene Dietrich ever had teeth removed to create that contoured cheekbone look, but that was the Hollywood rumor at the time.)

Granted Christina's writing the book after Joan death is sus, but there have been as many people who came forward in support of her as there were who dismissed her claims. Christina is about as believable as Amber Heard's testimony against Johnny Depp. I'd give her accusations a 7/10 a plausible accusation but one so full of holes even an archaeologist can't dig it all up and find anything accurate so until more evidence comes to light Christina can't be possibly believed Joan is innocent till proven guilty and I stand by that fact about justice and I will fight till the end to keep that fact in short I have very high doubts on Christina's accusations against her mother sorry for the long comment.

    • @kaleoy7584
      @kaleoy7584 Před 5 lety +9

I don't believe Christina and I will tell you why.
Christina wasn't Joan's first adopted child. The first child was a boy that she named Christopher. Shortly after that adoption, the birth parents wanted the baby back and winning a court case against Joan. Joan was extremely heart broken. She later adopted Christina, then later Joan adopted a boy and was also named Christopher. Her reasoning for naming the boy Christopher, was because she truly and still loved her first adopted child.. Joan had fears after adopting both Christina and Christopher (second boy) that the same thing would happen where the birth parents would take them away. So to believe Joan only adopted for publicity, I don't buy. She later adopted twins.
Christina wasn't an angel. Joan may have disciplined her children that is not acceptable by today's standards, but it was acceptable back then. In fact, it was acceptable before Joan adopted children to the 1980s. Christina was a spoiled brat and felt entitlement. Joan provided for her children a great deal. She sent them to truly good schools (which were mostly boarding schools), fine clothing, fine eating, etc.. And just to add, celebrities commonly sent their kids to boarding schools, because as stated, they were truly good schools. Hilton sisters, Kardashian kids, and the likes all went to boarding schools, as well.
Christopher was also not an angel either. When he didn't get his way, he would run away from home and committing crimes along the way.
Christina wrote the scathing book to spite Joan for being left out of Joan's will. Christina needed money. She did go into acting for a while, but people that she worked with found her to possess a Diva personality. She would demand the biggest dressing rooms, for instance. She also pulled the "I am Joan Crawford's daughter" card when she didn't get her wishes. She was so difficult to work with that no one would hire her as an actor.
Christina's first husband also claimed that Christina was demanding and vindictive.
And I know some celebrities have claimed to have witnessed Joan abusing her children, but no one seems to ask them why they didn't say anything to the authorities. Because they never did anything when they felt the children were being overly disciplined, has me convinced those celebrities, like Christina, they had an ax to grin with Joan. Joan's secretary for nearly 50 years named Betty Barker stated that Joan was strict with her children, but they were never abused to the extent of which both book and movie depicted Joan as being. Hollywood news story writer Liz Smith stated in one of her articles "I was inclined to believe Joan was misguided in her attempts to 'mold' her children-and was vain and self-absorbed like most great stars-but the stories of beatings and near-madness were over the top.".
Christina did mocked the so-called abuse on a show in the 80s. She made fun of the so-called wire hanger alleged incident, which I found very troubling. If one suffers from any form of extreme abuse, one does NOT feel the desire to mock it. Simply for the fact it was a dramatic event and should never be made fun of.
The point of my winded reply, is hopefully encourage you to do more research and not rely solely on Christina's book. When I first saw the movie back when it came out, I bought the book and read it. I truly believed at the time Christina was telling the truth. I later decided to research Christina Crawford and Christopher Crawford. It was then when I started to see a more clearer picture of who Christina is. This is why I'll never believe Christina. Remember, she only decided to write the scathing book AFTER Joan had passed and Christina finding out her and Christopher were left out of the will. The twins were in the will, but not Christina and Christopher. I will add that both Christina and Christopher contested the will and won in court and was awarded money from Joan's estate. Another sign of entitlement by those two. Another sign of going against Joan's wishes.
Christina and Christopher are not the innocent victims of extreme child abuse and Joan was not the monster they both made her out to be.

Personally, I think the only real reason they "don't make them like that anymore" is simply due to the demise- for better and worse- of Hollywood's old Studio system, which demanded the creation of "Stars" and guaranteed actors under studio contract a set number of movies before contract's expiration.

Bruises to the face take at least a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks to fade.

Joan Crawford had difficulty adopting via normal routes because she was considered an unacceptable parental candidate and was rejected. She had to find more unconventional ways to adopt where adoption laws were more lax. Or as Christina said, she didn't adopt children, she bought them. Christina also says they could never find any adoption papers for her brother.

My mother was like that. Fits of rage out of nowhere. So random. Zero to 100 in an instant. Sometimes you wouldnt even know what set her off. And when she is in that zone Lord the terror. Like a wild animal. Merciless to bitter out cries. Cruel at times. I just never understood that anger. But as i got older i realised she had a deeper pain inside than that she inflicted on us. She needed healing. The best thing i ever learnt is that parents are human too. We expect them to be perfect but we receive them as flawed as everyone else. Acceptance of the revelation that at that time she did the best she could. The best she KNEW HOW. Being a parent doesnt change that.

Good point, Shannon. Joan could, and did, abuse the oldest two without any repercussions. How sad for them, and for all abused children, whether natural or adopted. When my kids were younger I kept a sharp eye out for any neighbourhood kids that looked dirty and hungry, and reported my concerns more than once to the local DFAC, Department of Children and Families. I fed many kids over the years and always welcomed my kids friends inside if it was cold and miserable outside.
