- Severe Weather Tornado Warning | RV Life
We are having some very interesting weather luck so far in 2021! After being caught in an historic winter storm in Galveston, this week we found ourselves facing severe thunderstorms with potential flooding, high winds, hail and tornadoes in Red Bay, Alabama.
We share how we prepared for the severe weather and the action we took to protect ourselves and our pets when we got the tornado watches and tornado warnings. This is our first experience with taking cover in a storm shelter, and we share how we prepared and what we learned for the future.
Storm preparedness is all part of the reality of full time RV life!

That added some excitement we weren't expecting this week! If you were in the path of the storms, we hope that you are safe and had no damage. It seems we're building up a bit of experience about RVing in a variety of weather conditions. If you've missed our other weather-related videos, you can find them here: czcams.com/play/PL3vGBOkcBm2XnqSsXlosk_Hso7eokehnq.html . Have a great weekend!
I'm from Moore Oklahoma and am an expert on Tornado preparedness. I give y'all an A for effort, but a B- for execution. You did good by getting your stuff together and setting it by the door. However, it took you wayyyyy toooooo long to get in your vehicle and get to the shelter! I was absolutely a nervous wreck watching this video. Seriously, my heart was pounding and I was yelling for you to hurry up!! If a tornado would've hit your area, your kayaks would've been flying objects and your bikes as well. I know you did your best with those items, but those could've been a problem. Very good advice to know what county you're in and locate a shelter.
I was a nervous wreck watching this too lol. i grew up in nebraska and those sirens sound all too familiar. The sirens and those big dark black clouds
I agree. I would not be taking my time in that instance. If anything, I would have had the go bags already in the car, the bikes and kayaks in the RV, so all we needed to do would be grab the doggos and punch it! But kudos on them for being pro active about knowing where to go and having bags ready.
Usually when the alarm sounds there's a nado on the ground already. You guys were real slow getting out of there.
On the Brightside at least they had somewhere to go near me we don't have shelters at all 😐
I would have just ran. That was scary.
@@seekingjoynow1722 yeah we had three hit near me when we first moved in a little bit and it was three of them and before that also was nighttime and before that we had one actually touchdown but it was small thank God and thankfully everyone was all right we got out in time in the night time but the night that's three hit we had to leave my cat and lizard at home because it was unexpected we didn't have time to prepare and I grabbed my dog and we went and at night time I will tell you it's a hundred times scarier than day
Yes they were moving a tad too slow for me. Glad they are safe.
I agree. You might have 10 minutes if you're lucky. Maybe keep the bugout bags in the Jeep so all you have to do is grab the pets and GO!!!
Astro senses your anxiety and wants to comfort both of you
Probably so!
Good advice when in a storm area, always good to where you can run. Be careful, stay safe.
Alabama never gets a break.
This spring was crazy!
You are blessed that you have a loving spouse, kind hearted pets, and a great travel life. I am fascinated by stormy skies and severe thunderstorms. I live in Texas also, and the storms we get are also dangerous at times. Glad you are alright, and that Red Bay has outdoor warning sirens for your notification.
Thanks
That was an excellent video! I'm so glad you all are ok and I'm thankful you found a shelter that accepts pets. Stay safe!
I’d rather have a hurricane any day...you’re given days and days of the expected path. Tornadoes, not so much. With them, you can be fine one minute and the next here it is with nowhere to run/hide. Glad y’all and the fur babies are okay. Safe travels.
So glad you all were okay---those dark clouds looked really wicked!
That they did. I find it fascinating when it storms
Geez. Those where nasty clouds. Glad all worked out well for both of you and the fur kids.
An excellent video and hopefully it opened the eyes of a few people. This was no doubt a scary situation for everyone. So glad y'all are fine. NOW GET BACK HOME!!!! LOL. Safe travels.
Glad you were prepared when the sirens went off, Your the best.
Thank you Larry. Next time we’ll load the bags in the car ahead of time.
@@rvamericayall Good idea! It may save your life
I downloaded the NOAA weather app. Most other apps rely on NOAA weather for alerts so you get alerts quicker.
Good tip Roy
So glad you’re safe. It made me nervous watching the video with the black clouds in the background. Just be very cautious if you’re in the situation where you have a warning but don’t hear the sirens - seek shelter then. If you wait for the sirens you may not have enough time to get to your shelter.
Happy you and your pets were safe. BUT you took to long and took to much stuff. You never know how close the tornado could be💛💛🙏🏻🙏🏻
Fair
Thanks for the video...those clouds we're wicked looking. Good input on having a plan and a bug-out bag with your important stuff. Glad the shelter allowed fur-babies too! 🙂
Glad your ok. Hope nobody was hurt 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤
We are in Red Bay, also. Rode out the storm in the pet friendly lounge at the service center. Hope to run into you this week, if you are still in town!
So glad you were safe! Thanks so much for all of the great information!
Really good video. I know we need to think more about what we need with us when and if we have to leave the coach. Thanks for the reminder. Glad everything is ok.
I'm glad you were prepared and stayed safe! We dreaded every Spring when we lived outside of Nashville, TN. We had a designated area built into our house we had there (no basement). We also had a tornado siren not far from our house. If we ever are at the same park, ask us and we have some interesting tornado stories.
You guys are having a Crazy spring!! Yikes! I’m glad you are fine and enjoying life.
So glad that you guys are safe. It is always better to be prepared and not needed than to not be prepared and need it. Some great tips from you guys again. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! That is as close as you EVER want to get to a storm like that! Been there - had to hide in the closet under the stairs in our house with my young daughter and her friend while my friend went to get our other daughters at school. Crazy! Hey at least you had some excitement for nothing. That’s a good story with a happy ending!
Good information for us (husband and I) to think about. So glad the church stepped up for the community. Glad you are all safe. PTL!
So glad you were prepared! Excellent content!
As a new RVer I found this video very helpful. Thank you for sharing. Glad you guys were safe.
You guys would be at home up here in Oklahoma. Snow in the morning, ice storm at lunch, tornados in the evening. 🤣😅 Yall be safe out there. :Nic
Man you guys! I was worried you were going to be blown away. Glad you are safe, and thank you for this very helpful review of steps to take to prepare for emergencies. I think living through hurricanes in H-town has given you special knowledge!!!
Praise God you are prepared and safe. I grew up on Long Island and had a basement. We were always ready with extra food, water etc. To this day Im always ready... Extra food , 12 extra cases of water, extra dog food vitamins in my travel trailer..... When I lived in Cayucos, Morro Bay I lived 7 houses from the ocean so I had a Tsunami app. and yes we had a few small tsunamis and yes I was prepared. God Bless I Love you guys
Thanks so much Annamay! Preparation definitely made this event less stressful.
Glad y’all were safe and prepared
Thanks so much!
So glad things turned out OK. Thanks for sharing how y'all prepared and what was going on. Appreciate your time sharing this video. Take Care, Safe Travels and hope to be seeing the both of you before too long. Grammy Kay
Glad you two are okay! Was concerned... Stay safe guys!
Great Video guys! Glad you’re safe! We just had Tornado Watches in Montgomery County...we were very lucky!!
So glad you guys are safe and you were able to take your fur babies with you.
Well done you guys. We learned a lot from this segment! You are appreciated!
Great prep video! Glad you were all safe! Love that the shelter took pets! ❤️And always love your Bucees masks!
You did great preparing, but when the sirens go off go, go, go, I live in Minnesota we have had sirens go off and tornado hit 5 minutes later. Stay safe❤❤
Thanks, you’re right, we should have gone quicker!
❤I'm thanking you thank you 🎉.
So glad you all are safe🙏 Great video and information for us all.
Thanks Cecilia!
That was scary. I've never seen a tornado. You two were very organized.
It's been quite the weather year already, hasn't it? Glad y'all are safe..thansk for sharing these tips, too!
So important that you nade this video....awesome info for many folks. Thanks
Great video documenting the process! Glad y'all are safe. Cheers!
Thanks so much! The crazy weather seems to be following us this year.
Outstanding information. Thank you’ll.
Thanks Greg! We learned how slowly we moved even when we thought we were moving fast.
So glad y’all made it through that storm, that was real. We went trough one last year and it wasn’t good, we were spared but many in the park were damaged by many trees blown down. Please stayed tuned seems that storm season is going southern states. Safe safe travels, Awesome preparations!!
Thanks Randy! Glad y’all were spared last year. We were definitely happy not to be parked under tree branches.
Great information.
Glad y'all had a plan and all turned out. Safe travels. Thank you and God Bless
Thank you Richard.
Oh so glad you all are safe!
Thanks Joanne!
Just watched you tornado prep and going to shelter. Super educational. Very professional presentation
Thanks so much Marty. We definitely need to get faster.
Great advice and I’m glad you’re both safe! I hope everyone in Red Bay is OK since many of the folks who work in the area live in surrounding communities.
Thanks John. It sounds like everyone around Red Bay is fine.
Glad you all are safe and the weather didn't become dangerous for you. Thanks for all the tips and info about your preparations. It really is a big help. God bless and Safe Travels.
Thanks so much! There are a few other points we forgot to mention, so we’re putting together a post for the website with that info.
I'm so happy for you guys. Looks our clouds here in Florida. Be safe.
Just found you guys and I subscribed, I live in the south so I know all too well about tornados. We have had a terrible time over the past few weeks with severe weather and the weather man is already calling for more severe weather this coming week. It is looking like it is gonna be a really active Spring for tornadoes. I’m so glad that the shelter you went to was pet friendly. I have pets and I always make sure they are safe as well during weather warnings.
Welcome Steph! We're happy to have you along for the adventures. This year has certainly started off with some ridiculous weather. Hope it calms down.
Wow! What a month!! Glad you’re all safe!!!
Lol! Ain’t that the truth?!
Omg Glad y’all are ok
Thanks Georgeana. We're fine.
It was good watching this.....You remind us of how we need to handle things, after we go FT.
Good ideas and reminders of what to do....Thanks... We do (right now) live in Huntsville, so we get our share of watches....and they have hit here and hit hard....Hope to meet you all on the road in a couple of months....
Very cool !
What a smart idea to know the COUNTY you are in. Great tip.
Thanks! It has helped us a lot.
Very good video....very informative!
Thankful all is well!!!
Thank you Jessica!
So glad yall are okay!
Thank you Becky
That was scary just to watch, I can't imagine what you were going through. Jayman...
It definitely got our adrenaline going!
Thank you Jesus everyone is and animals are safe, Scared me too death.
Thank you James. It definitely had our hearts pounding.
We were just less than 1/4 mile away from where the Rowlett, Tx tornado hit in 2015. We knew there was a tornado on the ground but the forecasters weren't quite sure of the direct path it would take, but our son who used to be a storm chaser and was there visiting for Christmas, knew it was taking a path right toward us. When the sirens went off, the electricity went off about 30 seconds later and then it hit in about a minute or so after the sirens sounded. Luckily for us, it took a veer to the right and barely missed our area. However it did blow some cars off the freeway and there were several deaths as a result of that. I'm glad it didn't come any closer to you or fizzled out because normally those sirens can be a last alert.
Wow Debbie! So glad it missed y’all. We definitely learned that we need to move even faster next time. We’ll have the bags in the car instead of having to load them. (And we took a few things out to make them lighter.)
Sure take their time
God bless
Thanks
Thx for sharing real life.
No problem! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the very informative interview. We will be traveling across country in May through Kansas and Missouri. we have apps on our phones and a weather radio. By the way did you pull your slides in before you went to the shelter ? Glad you are ok.
I'm glad y'all were safe and everything worked out. Severe weather events are often underestimated when you travel so it is always best practices to create your emergency plans for all your trips. Keep up the great videos. P.S. Will y'all ever sale large vinyl stickers for your channel? I would love to buy one. 😊
FYI, we are staying at Convenient Campground by the Service Center and have 22 air channels.
AMEN. THANK YOU GOD AMEN
Yes
I think I prefer hurricanes to tornados...you have days to prepare...never experienced a tornado and don't want to. Glad you were safe.
We agree 100% Debbie!
Awesome video! 🌹🌹
Thanks Bonnie!
Your cat is so cute
Thanks Bryce!
Yes this time of year my hubby & I (here in KY) are always on the watch, we’re in Tornado Alley. We’re not full timers yet, we camp for a week at a time or a few days at a time mainly here in KY, so we’re always hyper vigilant about weather. Glad y’all were ok🤗
Thanks Lisa! It pays to pay attention, that’s for sure.
Also, unhook your water & power in a bad storm or tornado.
Tornado sirens always give me the chills. I liked Stacie's tee shirt at the beginning of the video and learned something. It's Caprock Canyons State Park. I've always called it Caprock Canyon SP.
It's good to know the county you are in and while you are at it, look up the name of the county to the southwest. I got a tornado warning in the middle of the night for the county to the SW and went back to sleep thinking, I don't live in that county. Next thing I know, I'm woken back up by the house feeling like it's about to get ripped off the foundation. We scrambled out of bed and got to a relatively safe place. The neighborhood cleanup went quickly, thankfully we were spared. You never know who gets hid hard and those that don't.
Good info! But I think once you hear the sirens there's only like 6-8 minutes of time if not zero. I would have had everything in the Jeep ready to just jump in and go (except the dogs). Glad your safe!
i saw those storms going that away i was wondering if u all were ok that great when a church opens up for thing like that but glad u all are ok and your fur babies good information also so safe travels and becareful as u all travels we have a mighty God too
Nice to meet you🐬🐬🐬
Nice to meet you too Susan
Smart advice for this season coming up to others to be prepared! If your still there would you be able to see if you can see our coach?
i live in Mississippi so i remember the warnings
What a season!
Keep dodging the bad weather. If this continues you might want to change your call sign to 'Dark Cloud'.
LOL! Hopefully we're done with it for a while!
Thank God I live in New Hampshire. We have Nor'easters where they can dumb 3 feet of snow but, nothing like a Tornado.
I know y'all didn't have far to go but you took an awful long time to get there lol. Glad you all were safe though.
We agree 100%! Need to work on getting faster.
That was the storms that blew through East Texas early Wednesday morning! 😳
Yikes! Hope everything is okay there Michael.
Great video! Glad you were safe and prepared. There are few apps that will tell you what county you are in, such as "Where am I At?" and "Where Am I".
We’ll check those out. Thanks!
I’ve never been a fan of the Methodists. May need to rethink my attitude.🤔JK. Glad you’re all safe. You seemed to be remaining pretty calm.
I’ve been through several earthquakes here on the left coast, but never a tornado. I probably would have been crying like a little girl.😬
The sirens you hear are Whelens.
👀
Being prepared is only part of the equation. You have to be willing to act when it's time to act. And you have to know when that time comes. Some people go to the shelters as soon as the watch is issued, but at the very least, when you saw that sky, you should have been running for it then. You had a false sense of security with your bags packed and a plan in mind.
Thanks for the feedback Jan. This was our first time in that situation.
Wow. About half way through those skies looked bad.
Hey Vernon. It got a bit sketchy for a while.
be safe we are n Pa we getting the same here
Stay safe James!
Like you said in the beginning hopefully it’s just a practice run! But I was curious, do you fill up your freshwater tanks to add Weight to the bottom of the vehicle?
That’s a great point. We had over 2/3 a tank of freshwater and we took long showers early in the day to fill the grey water tank for added weight.
I say bring in the slides now!
Good idea. We have in the past, Lisa. Just as we were about to this time, things calmed down.
We get the warnings watchs but rarely get tornados here in West Allis but have had had them just never have hit by my house or the new apartment I now live in ! Never been in a tornado except I did almost was in one but it hit 14 blocks from me ! It went over the house but never touched down but did 14 blocks away in 1975 but never was in one but we come close to having them and one came close to hitting but never hit by me Thank God ! We do get tornados in West Allis but its a rare thing can happen just has never hit by me !
So happy to know they've always missed you Patti. Stay safe!
I hope y'all get a chance to check out Swamp John's it's the Best Catfish around just ask anyone how to find them everyone in town knows them . I live here in red Bay also so I'm glad we din't see what could have been .Stay safe you two.
If you're still in Red Bay here' the 2 channels I monitor : WHNT TV 19 and WTVA they both stream and when the power goes off here I can still get them.
Thanks for the suggestions Mike! We ate at Swamp John's last year and it was great! We appreciate the reminder.
Oh, my goodness. Remind me not to follow you guys freeze now tornados you are having some bad weather. Glad it was ok. Great to have a plan. Just wondering, you didn't close your slides? Any reason you wouldn't do it. Great advice to learn where you are for emergencies.
We were ready to close the slides. We have closed them during previous storms. Somehow we didn't get much wind with this storm. And just as we thought we might get hammered by high winds, it all calmed down.
I know that if you get a direct hit the rig will probably be toast, but, wouldn't it be wise to put the slides in?
I use a phone app called Where am I. Gives you street address, county, elevation, Lat & Lon, sunset, sunrise.
