Cheap Truck Mods That Won't Break The Bank!!!

  • In this video, I discuss a few relatively cheap truck mods that are bank account friendly. There are a number of changes that you can make to your vehicle without giving up an arm or your first born. My particular cut-off for "cheap" vs "expensive" is $500. That may seem a bit arbitrary, and some people may have lower or higher cut-offs than mine, but that's where I'm choosing to draw the line.
    If you find this video helpful, please hit the like button and share it with another Tundra owner that you think can benefit from it.

      I know that not everyone is going to like my truck. The look of a truck is such an individual thing. There are even things that I would change about it now, such as 18" wheels instead of 20". No offense taken.
      Thanks for your feedback on my video editing! From the beginning, I knew that I wanted to get straight to the point in my videos.

      @@toyotaFANatic81 Yup, 2014 1794. I meant it as more of a compliment, that despite that, I found it a great video. Definitely don’t dislike your truck. I went with +40 offset, 285/75R18s. Slight tire poke. Was going to do flares, but felt the slight tire poke was perfect for my taste. Absolute minimal lift.

      I definitely have 18's in mind for my Tundra in the future ... along with certain suspension upgrades that will make it more offroad worthy.
      If you have a 1794, then you've got the TOP trim level. I'm sure that it's a beautiful truck!!!

    Great vid dude! I've done a few mods to my 21' 1794 and I'm still going. In grill light bars, bumper light bar, hood scoop light bar, (yes, I love more lights😊), Morimoto headlights gen2, S&B intake, TRD skid plate, cat security plate, LED bulbs all around, and the first mod I did when I bought the truck is take out that crappy sound system and upgraded to a more louder system, but kept the head unit. I will eventually lift the truck using Bilstein shocks. And as for your question, I think my cut off is 2k. But I will say I try to keep the small mods under 500. Instead of painting my calipers, I have colored caliper covers, keeps the dust to a bare minimum.

    Dude by far this was my favorite Tundra modification video!
    I love the idea of the fender flares but here in Canada we have to deal with lots of moisture and salt, leading to rust., my bro calls them rust covers
    Hub extensions is another great idea
    That way you get to keep the tires you have and it makes it look cooler!
    Cold air intake absolutely necessary is a must . Cooler dense air= happy truck
    I am in the market looking for a Toyota Tundra but here in Canada fuel is 1.20$ to 1.68 $ a litre.
    I heard HP tuners might help with fuel economy. 1000$ plus ... I'll have to save my pennies.
    It's amazing how your wife let you use her truck lol!

    • @toyotaFANatic81
      @toyotaFANatic81  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks for checking out the video.
      1) I live in Canada 🇨🇦, specifically Alberta. The paint under my flares is just fine, and I never plan to take them off anyway.
      2) I've used spacers (what you called "hub extensions") on one of my previous trucks. You wrote "you can keep the same tires," but I hate to break it to you ... spacers have nothing to do with the type of tires a person runs on their truck. Spacers are associated with the WHEELS, not the tires.
      I have no issue with wheel spacers, but I'd rather get a wheel with a negative offset than use spacers again. Also, the aftermarket wheels I have on the truck look FAR better than the stock wheels regardless of whether I'm running spacers or not.
      3) The air that runs through the CAI is not "colder" air. On a Tundra, the CAI gets fed ambient air from the fender well, and that air is warm. The trick behind CAI is the better filter, not cold air. With CAIs, more airflow (due to the filter) is what contributes to the VERY slight bump in horsepower. "Cold Air Intakes" are named incorrectly, because it's still warm air that runs through them. An engine tune or a supercharger would give the truck a real significant boost in power, but both of those are far more expensive.
      4) In Alberta, the price of gas (right now) sits between $1.18/L and $1.34/L.
      5) As for you saying it's my wife's truck ... that's funny. Take a look at a few more videos. Her vehicle is featured in a number of them.

    Dude that Tundra is sick!! I Love all your videos too and thanks for putting these out!! I have a question about some headlights. I just got a 2016 Tundra and I want to swap out the headlight assembly for a set with LED DRL’s. Do I need a harness or relay or anything to prevent flickering or can I just plug them in and go? Thanks!!

      @toyotaFANatic81  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey, man. Thanks for the compliment on the truck.
      To be honest with you, I actually do not know if a truck without the DRLs can support a set of headlight housings with them. My Platinum Tundra came with LED DRLs in the housings (from the factory).
      I wish that I had a better answer for you. The vehicle filters on Amazon and Ebay work pretty well in terms of offering up parts that will work with your particular truck.

      The process was similar to the door handles:
      - Tape plastic over the border of the grille where you don't want to get paint on
      - Lightly wet-sand the grille surface with 800 grit sand paper
      - Apply two coats of primer (with 20 min between coats)
      - Apply three to four coats of base paint (with 20 min between coats)
      - Apply four to six coats of acrylic clear-coat (with 20 min between coats)
      - Leave the grille overnight for the clear-coat to dry/harden.
      - Reinstall the grille
      I hope that helps!

    Is their a good guide on how to do a proper lift with bigger tires? I've seen too many that rub when you turn, pull the truck to the side, road noise, and even bottom out on big bumps

    • @toyotaFANatic81
      @toyotaFANatic81  Před 2 měsíci

      It's funny that you mention that. I'm working on a guide like that right now.
      Right now, I would say look at videos and visit Tundra message boards. Talk to guys that have successfully outfitted their Tundras with 35s without rubbing or bottoming out.
      I would say a 4" lift is probably the lowest you can go if you want to run 35s PROPERLY. I say "properly" because I've seen guys say that they got a 2.5" lift & level and were able to fit 35s .... BUT then there's a ton of rubbing and bottoming out.
      Even with the 4" or 6" lift, you may still have to trim the front of your fender and possibly get a body-mount chop (BMC) at the back of the fender.
      The Tundra bumper can also be moved forward slightly. There are a number of ways of going about it.
      In terms of pulling the truck to the side, that has more to do with suspension alignment, not the lift itself.
      In terms of road noise, that's usually generated by the tires and has nothing to do with the lift. ATs, RTs, and MTs will always be louder than the boring summer tires that the trucks come with from the factory. Some ATs are better than others, but RTs and MTs are loud ... period.

      @toyotaFANatic81  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hey, Rob! Thanks for watching the video.
      To answer your question, it still rides fairly smooth. I'd say that it has 85 to 90% of the ride quality it had before I lifted it.
      As with any lifted truck, you'll have to get it aligned more often than a stock truck. I also have wheels with a negative offset (the stock wheels had quite a positive offset), so that doesn't help.
      All-in-all, I'm happy with the truck and I don't mind the extra maintenance.

      2) You can paint over chrome parts, but there is a process to it.
      - Use 600 to 800 grit sand-paper to scuff up the chrome.
      - apply 2 coats of primer
      - apply 3 or 4 coats of base paint

      For example, mine says C/TR: 1G3/LE20. The "1G3" is the code for Magnetic Grey.
      Find the code on your door panel and take it to a hardware store where they sell automotive spray paint. You can use the code to find the right color. The lid on the can will also match the color of your truck.

      When I said that those GM-style mirrors are a "bitch" to install, I wasn't talking about attaching them to the truck. That's the easy part. In order for them to be FULLY functional, there is extra wiring to be done. That's the hard (or long) part.
      If you just plug in the mirrors into the harness, you'll get heating, signaling, and electronic adjustment.
      In order to get the reverse lights (on the back of the mirrors) and the ambers (on the front of the mirrors) to work, that extra wiring is required.

    A cold air intake does nothing you don’t gain any HP or better gas mileage

    • @toyotaFANatic81
      @toyotaFANatic81  Před 10 měsíci

      Yeah ... that seems to be a popular opinion. As I said in the video, I will get a small "bump" in horsepower, not a massive one like with a supercharger. The after-market air box I purchased is BIGGER than the stock air box, allowing a greater volume of air to get to the throttle body. Combine that with a filter that allows better airflow ... well, you and I both know what happens when you get a greater volume of air into the engine (more horsepower). The real problem is that a lot of guys think that they will get a tremendous increase in HP when they install a new intake. I'm not suffering from that delusion. I know that it's only a small increase. Later on, I will 1) get the truck re-geared, and 2) get the truck tuned. Both of those mods will add a significant amount of HP to the truck.
