I've worked in enough factories to know copper anti-seize when I see it.
That stuff is good for two things: making sure stainless steel bolts never seize together, and making sure electrical terminals have a *STRONG* electrical connection.
Also, staining your skin. Forever.
Anti-seize is the herpes of chemicals. Once it gets on you, it gets on all the things. I laughed really hard when it was on his laptop.
So true. Even two years after I had gotten it on me I could still see it on me, under a microscope. But still, that crap doesn’t ever want to come off. Plus my optimist can now see a gold ring in my eye. He told me not to come into contact with any more copper. Ever!

I dont think you put enough paste on, I think you are supposed to splash it everywhere so your entire motherboard is gold!
On a serious note, shouldn't the entire contact area of the chip be covered?
when you apply force by the coolers flat side, it spreads the paste. You really dont need that much thermal compound :) If it doesnt spread onto all the corners is still not a problem. Under the heatsink, the chip is near at the middle.. so yea. The amout Linus put is more than enough.
The cooler sits on top of the cpu tight enough for the paste to squish out and cover it.
The most popular (and arguably best) method is to put a rice-corn sized dab in the middle of the CPU and let the heatspreader push it into the corners. You really don't need much paste.

I'm sure most AIO makers use thermal paste in bulk and put them in the little syringes we get.

Is that basically just copper dust suspended in oily gel?
Yup. It's called anti-seize.
It's typically used on fasteners so they don't break off when you're trying to unscrew them. I'm not sure if they still do but Glock at one point used it for lubrication on thei pistols from the factory.

Lube. Clearly.
If you can't think of a way ChannelSuperFun could use a tub of thermal compound, then you might have a rather dull and uninspiring imagination.
well it is mostly only copper powder in it and some grease.
Use it at work for brakejobs (Car mechanic) and it does last a long time, at least 1 year on a car that is beeing used every day an high pressure washed every week.
The only downside is that when standing in a tub it separates a little over time but just mix it and it is conductive.
It usually holds up to over 500 degrees Celsius.
I think you have applied it badly, from the video it is to little.
Using it on my computer right now since i forgot to order thermal paste when rebuilding my computer and it is cooler now (was some regular non metallic, non diamond from before

I bought a 3 gram tube back when I built my pc with a pentium 4, then I used it again for when I built my amd 1100t pc, then I used it again for my i7-4790k and I just checked it and still have some left for my Amd Ryzen 1800x build. That's 16 years for 3 grams. 1 kilo is 333 times more than 3 grams X 16 years, that's enough for a little bit more than 5000 years. I'm just glad I also have amazon prime so I'll get that shit tomorrow.
This one will be good for PC builders or engineers in large companies with lots of PCs to maintain.
No this particular one. I wonder how much one kilo of silver compound is.
Ok but LMG doesn't do 1 build every 5.3 years
CZcams5000 Get new for your new build. After a few years performance is shit
This stuff isn't good enough for use in a PC repair/maintenance business. If I had a business like that, I'd take a closer look at something like the Arctic MX-4 20g tube. It's good, fairly cheap, and due to the low density of MX-4, 20g will be enough for a great many PCs.
Also, I wouldn't use thermal compound older than 10 years.
According to what it looks like, I could use Anti-seize compound as a thermal paste. The stuff you got there is mineral oil mixed with copper dust, same as you use to keep machine screws lubricated.
Wait I'm confused now ( I'm new to PC building) if I buy a cpu cooler do I have to apply thermal paste frequently or just once
You need to replace them depending on your type of usage. For gaming, needs to be replace every 6-8months or if the peak load temp is too high, say 80 C and above and your performance being compromise.
I have diamond polishing paste for polishing gemstone, can we use it as thermal paste.
No comparisons?
A single product from a single brand?
This doesn't answer the question posed in the title.
Rather, it should be "Is it worth buying this exact specific product in bulk?"
Xclusivity Do you honestly think that buying that much thermal compound is worth it? even if it was high quality
If you run a computer repair shop or a job that requires you to work with computers/ servers then yes. When I was shadowing the IT guy at the college I went to he had a jar of thermal paste and about 12 tubes of the arctic aluminum paste. The jar was for the computers and laptops and the tubes was for the servers.
Depends on the needs of the customer, computer repair shops might, businesses that assemble their own hardware might.
There are several instances where people might want to buy thermal compound in bulk.
At the very least LTT could have gone with a decent brand offering a well-known product in bulk quantities.
For example, www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm
That at least gives people a more valid reference point.
Then they could even compare application method and performance of standard thermal compound in tubes vs. bulk.
Ya really this only applies to computer hardware businesses that constantly apply and\or reapply thermal paste. I mean one tube that comes with your heat sink is enough to do several reapplications.
Would be interesting to see the price for those commercial quantities of Arctic Silver. 100-500 grams
I'd like to see Linus cosplay Peanut Butter Baby in this stuff

HY610 is one of the cheapest thermal compounds that you can buy. No wonder why it flopped on a CPU with a 140w TDP. Seriously, go type "thermal compound" on ebay and sort low to high. i've used it on a few of my el cheapo rigs, and I can say with confidence that HY610 is cut with peanut butter and toothpaste.
tacobellchihuahua do you know if the HY710 is any better?!
Yes, it is quite a bit better. If you can get the HY810, it is going to be even better.
Most of the problems with the very cheap thermal paste, like the one Linus used, is consistency within the paste itself, the materials used, and the quality control of the thermal paste.
I've tried the HY610, the 710, and the 810, and both the 710 and 810 are a big step up from the 610.
NeutronPCXT excellent, thank you!

try dow corning / dowsil 340 thermal grease.
It is a generic white silicone thermal grease, it comes in a 100g tube for around $10, it is easy and clean to apply you just squeeze a blob out then screw the cap back on.
It performs fine for a basic compound and the tube lasts for ages.
what about copper grease meant for loosing up bolts? im using it and only that. but im interesting to see how bad/good it is compared to arctic silver 5 and silicon paste
"24 carats of thermal paste" No Linus it's not how that works
Might be, that would put it at 4.8g.
Krzysiek Benc bizarrely enough, that is how it works. 24 carats is 4.8 grams. They also sell 7 carat, which is 1.4 grams. Same paste, just different volume.

But that *is* how it works. 1 carat = 0.2 grams.
Carat is a measure of mass used mostly for jewelry (gold, silver, gems, ...) so yeah that is the way it works

HY610 ticked, but says HY600 on the front, you know this is going to be a good review...
thats why it's ticked. Manufacturers who sell bulk items will sometimes have a single package for things in the same series, like this hy600 series thermal grease.
You will find they are all hy600, with the line item ticked like it showed (610,620, etc).... So this is the hy600 range, there might well be an HY700 range for all we know.

3:54 Thermal grease is NOT thermal paste for CPU's it's for lubricating while having thermal transfering.
Thermal grease is synonymous with thermal paste. And it is for CPUs. From the Amazon description: "Apply to CPU, VGA, LED, Chipset and other PC components"
It looks pretty much like the copper paste, which is used for lubricating.
To my knowledge, it is used as a thermal resistant lubricant.
I use it to lubricate certain components of my brake system.
yes it looks like copper grease, used to lubricate cylinder head bolts prior to installation, brake parts and other auto parts that get hot
But that's where you're wrong, Dan. Thermal Grease and thermal paste are two words for the same exact thing - Further shown by the fact that the labels even say so.
Look it up...

I have a ~14-15 yr old tube of Arctic Silver 5 that I use off and on, I just don't build enough PCs to need a ton of this stuff. Used it this Spring on a build, performs just like day 1.
Well I think that was the shortest straight-to-the-point video I've ever seen on this channel 🤜🏽🤛🏼🤣
Those tools on the wall... they don't seem computer related...
HAMMER 4 LIFE
LinusPhysicalTestTips
I see you have not been acquainted with the art of percussion maintenance.
When you have a pretty troublesome problem, You can always depend on the programming hammer and the variable readjustment wrench to knock them 1's and 0's back in line.
If you have sensitive information on a device that is particularly resilient to this treatment, the permanent process termination cutters are the top choice tool for any professional that is considering putting it into retirement. ;)
They use them on computers.
Radiator not staying in place? drill it.
Not fitting into place? Hammer is great for that.
Something is not sliding smooth? Flex it.
Yep LMG is a great place to learn how to carefully handle hardware!
Zcooger Second Channel I actually did saw off part of my case to fit my card in. when the mobo wills it but the frame doesnt? Saw.
did you check if it spread correctly?
Yeah... That is what I expected too. The inconvenience of not having it in a tube. Why did Linus not comment on that, and why did he not use the small pea or rice grain sized blob in the middle. I mean, they did a video about it! If half the area have to conduct heat through air, no wonder!
Yeah, I think I'd have gone for an old-school full spread with that stuff. Realistically, though, if you were actually gonna use goop from a tub like that, you'd be better off just loading it into a syringe for daily use. But we don't expect that sort of forethought from Linus. :)
My thoughts exactly. Let's do something in an inferior way and then insult the product! Yeah, that MUST be the problem here!
They have an earlier video where they show that it makes little difference how you apply thermal compound.
Correct. The how doesn't matter. But you still need to use enough thermal paste ^^
But what is the difference between thermal compound and jam?
I don't think this is good
Because the action of mixing of the separated oil and the thermal goop would also have tiny bubbles of air mixed in it.

HI Linus,
some time ago, you've asked us for advice on what new material you should bring in the show, and I have it.
Call it "trade little secrets", where you should discuss all the small and peculiar findings and tips regarding PC's in general.
Things that help you when you do something, easiest ways to do it, best materials/and so on.
I hope this comment finds you. Likes would help, so please like it! :)
Warm regards to everyone!

Little tech tips
Does anyone know what chair it is?
For people with malfunctioning sweat glands could you rub this on them and they'll be good?
isnt this stuff for industrial use? instead of computers?
It is probably re-labeled/re-packaged copper anti-seize grease. So if that's the case, the answer is "yes". The labeling _says_ that it's used for computers and electronics though.
Aye, it does *say* it's for PC components, but... Shit man, it looks like fuckin' biscuit dough.
It says it's for CPU and GPU heat sinks, so it's false advertisement in that case.
Halnziye was actually a pretty famous brand in China, many people are using them in their computers, I personally been using the same model for several years, with no bad result, it transfers heat effectively, it's easy to apply, it's dirt cheap, besides it seperate into oil and goo if you don't apply heat to it and set it for a long time, I really don't have any problem with it.
I seriously doubt Linus's applying method, it's totally wrong, so the result was so inaccurate.
where u get this info from? the brand is not famous.
Did anyone else notice that on the container it says HY600 but on the side, it's checked off as HY610?
I would assume it means it's HY600 series. x10, x20, x30, x50 would indicate different versions of the HY600 series.
I still have the same tube of arctic silver I've had since I graduated high school almost 10 years ago. How often is the average user repasting their CPU? It's not really that expensive.
