Why Do They Make Fun Of My Big Lips?

Ever since Hailie was little, she came from a family with big lips. She comes from a Black family, and it was totally normal for her relatives to have bigger lips, so she didn't see anything weird or wrong with it.
However, when she went to middle school, everything changed. The majority of the kids she went to school with were white, and they treated her differently for the way she looked. They would say horrible things to her every day at school - they would call her a monkey, say she was from the jungle and yell that she belonged in a zoo.
All the mean comments started to bother Hailie, and the mean kids made her insecure about her lips. At lunch, they would scream that she should have plastic surgery. When she went home, all Hailie could do was cry.
One time, Hailie told her mom that she wanted plastic surgery because she didn't like her lips. Hailie's mom told her that she was beautiful and that she should be proud of her lips, but it wasn't easy for her to take her mom's advice. She went on CZcams and looked up a beauty tutorial on how to make your lips look smaller.
She learned how to line her lips, and she went to school with a new outlook. She proudly walked down the hall with her smaller lips, and she wanted everyone to see. But one of the mean kids pointed out that she put makeup on her lips, and people started laughing. She ran to the bathroom and started crying.
During recess, the mean kids had big jugs of water and started throwing it at Hailie. All of a sudden, her makeup started smudging and coming off. She was so embarrassed and sad. Hailie ran to the principal's office, called her mom and got picked up.
For the next week, the mean kids stopped bothering Hailie. During that time, she started to look at all the beautiful Black women on social media. She started to identify with them and realize that she should be confident. She started to believe what her mom said - her lips made her beautiful.
When the mean kids at school eventually started teasing her again, Hailie had a totally different outlook. She responded to their mean comments by telling them that she loved who she was. They were left speechless!
Before Hailie's newfound confidence, she used to say to herself, "Why do they make fun of my big lips?" Now, she is proud of who she is, and she hopes that anyone else that is going through a similar situation knows how special and unique they are.

The fact that schools see this as “acceptable” and do absolutely nothing about the situation is horrendous, I’m glad that in the end she began to love herself for who she is and found self love.
I know how this is like I was never help with bullying by the school because of my race and its unfair all this but we're slowly all improving into better people

As someone with a small ass mouth and a non existent upper lip, I got teased for my small mouth and I always wanted a wider mouth and bigger lips, I think they look absolutely gorgeous! But then just like you, I learned to accept myself. I told myself that my lips are like doll lips! All lips are beautiful in their own way!

When I was in middle school, this girl at my school called me "afro monkey" and "pig nose" every day. I hated it and the worst part was that i told the principal about this at least a hundred times but she wouldn't listen to me. Eventually, the girl got caught bullying me and she ended up getting expelled. Ever since that day, I'm proud of my heritage. It still hurts sometimes when somebody rags on me for how I look, but on the whole, I just couldn't care less. People who are prejudiced and make fun of you for just being yourself are just scared insecure little people who can't go through one second of their day without trying to put you down to make themselves feel big. The bigger person is the most confident person, not the meanest person. Everybody who is reading this please remember this for life. And PLEASE, for the love of God, don't let people get you down and make you change who you are. Lift yourself and other people up. You're beautiful, inside and out.

My mom always said if I'm being bullied just tell them to fu€k off. She said no matter what you do you will still be bullied, when she was a kid she saw the same girls bulling kids about being fat and being skinny, so no matter what you do you will get bullied. She said it's better to just take the bullying as it is and don't go through the extra effort to change bc they will just find a new reason to bully you.

This is a wonderful story. The lessons is everyone is unique in a different way and everyone has their own challenges. It’s also not right to make fun of them because you might offend them. If your friend is being made of trying standing up for them if they can’t defend themselves. I am glad in the end this girl stood up for herself against the bullies.

I can actually relate to this story myself. I have big lips too and I think they’re bigger than the rest of my family. When my family first started to notice how big my lips were, they jokingly made fun of me. At first, I felt really uncomfortable and ashamed of how my lips looked. And I used to think, “Will my lips get smaller?” Now, I have learned to love the size of lips and learned to be happy with it. My lips may be like that for the rest of my life, but I will love it no matter what.
No one should be ashamed of the way you look because you are beautiful in your own way. Don’t let other people bring you down just because of a certain facial feature, you are beautiful. 😊

omg, this is the best. i have big lips and i've always been picked on for having them, but i didn't take time to realize that they're natural features for black people. so it doesn't bother me as much now, and i'm actually proud to have them 😅❤️

I have big lips too. I grew up in Arizona and in elementary I was basically the only black person in a full white school. They would make fun of my lips and call them DSL (if you know you know if you don’t you don’t) and it didn’t stop until I got to my freshman year. They also even made fun of my curly hair and my skin color.
